[Andreas Pereira is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Manchester United legends Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes, Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs] I always looked up to Paul Scholes, Giggsy, Wazza and Carras. When I got the chance to train with them you saw how professional they were every day and how hard they work. They were leading examples for me and I hope I can get to that stage one day. I’m trying my best to be the best role model I can be.

[Asked how impressed he was with United’s stars of tomorrow in 2018-19] They were brilliant. They trained a lot with us. I’ve been in their position so I try to help them as much as I can. It’s great to have them and to see young players coming through at United. It was my dream, and it’s still my dream, and it’s nice to see others doing it. We’re all a big family and at United you can see that everyone can do it if they work hard

[Pereira added on the buzz he gets from turning out alongside home-grown talent] Yes, it’s great. To me it’s an honour to play with someone who you have played with in the academy and have known a long time, and when you play in the stadium with them [for the first team] it’s amazing. We’re like family. It’s a special feeling

[Manchester United midfielder Andreas Pereira has put pen to paper on a new four-year contract, with the option to extend his stay a further year] I have spent so long in Manchester that I now regard the city and the club as my home and I’m extremely happy to continue my career here. The manager has shown great faith in me and I can’t wait to get this campaign started under him. We know that we all have to work hard and that started on day one of pre-season. I will be doing everything I can to help us perform the way we need to, this season and beyond. I also want to thank my family for the trust they have in me and God for the opportunity he has given me.

[Andreas Pereira has joked that he is ready to aid Manchester United’s efforts to keep Paul Pogba at the club by stealing the Real Madrid target’s phone] It is great [to train and play with him] - just in the group he is a great person. It will be very important if he stays with us. He is a very good player and a top-class as a person as well. I learn from him every day. He is one of my closest friends, I have been here with him since 16, so he is like family to me. I might have to steal his phone so he doesn’t speak to anyone!

[The 23-year-old is aware that he still has much to learn, with talks having been held with Solskjaer on the back of a costly error in a 2-2 draw with Burnley in January] It was difficult but after the mistake, I was doing well. The manager spoke with me, I had to sit down, it was difficult for me but I came back with the goal against Southampton. I feel strong, I feel that I can step up. I feel that I have to take my chance now and I will be ready to take it this season. I have a lot more to show

[Andreas Pereira claims he can be like David Beckham for Manchester United, with a desire on the part of all of those at Old Trafford to make amends for a forgettable 2018-19 campaign] It’s my time to step up. I’m ready. As a number eight or a number ten. I can play on the right wing like Becks used to play, cut inside and get the early cross in. I have a lot to show

[Every member of Solskjaer’s squad knows that much more is expected of them] We felt like we were fading away, the training was not as sharp as it had been. There was a lack of concentration. We had a very bad feeling after the last game last season [a home defeat to relegated Cardiff]. This season, when we started pre-season, we spoke with the manager. The training sessions are sharper; we have the new young players too. We know what we did wrong and we know what we have to do to improve

Last season I had some difficulties to overcome mentally. I was doing well, then I had a setback where I was out of the team. Then Ole gave me a chance, he spoke to me and explained that I was in his plans. I learned a lot, I’m ready to step up, I feel confident and the manager feels confident in me. Mentally and physically, I feel stronger each year

[Andreas Pereira is aiming to bring joy and trophies back to Manchester United in 2019-20] I want to win trophies this year for United and bring the joy back to the club, to see the fans happy. I just want to get a lot of game-time and help the team as much as I can - score goals, make assists and win trophies. We’ve had very hard training sessions and prepared very well. We have to get used to winning and getting prepared for games by doing the right thing, I think that is what we have done as it’s been a very good preparation

[The 23-year-old is determined to reward the backing of his boss] I feel very confident and very happy. The manager gave me a lot of confidence, and the staff as well, so I feel very happy and very strong. I feel mature. I’ve played a lot of games and I’m a different type of player now and I’m ready for what’s coming next

[Andreas Pereira is adamant Manchester United are headed in the right direction thanks to the confidence Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has instilled in a young squad] For me, it has been massive. It’s very important to me that he speaks highly about me and I just want to do my best on the pitch to show the faith back to him. It’s very important for the young players to be given this confidence and then, if you have the chance, you have to take it with both hands

[Results to date have been mixed, although the three goals scored by new signing Daniel James provide encouragement] We have a very positive way of playing now. It’s a style I like a lot. We’re moving in the right direction and everyone has the same mindset, so I think we can achieve great goals this season

[Andreas Pereira says the support he has received from Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has played a massive role in his development] For me, [Solskjaer’s support] has been massive. It’s very important to me that he speaks highly about me and I just want to do my best on the pitch to show the faith back to him. It’s very important for the young players to be given this confidence and, then if you have the chance, you have to take it with both hands

[The Belgian-born player has played in a number of positions since emerging from United’s youth system] It’s difficult being a midfielder in today’s modern game. For a midfielder now you have to be strong, fast and see the play very quickly. You have to be very versatile

[Pereira feels he is not the only one who has benefitted from the changes Solskjaer has made] We have a very positive way of playing now. It’s a style I like a lot. We’re moving in the right direction and everyone has the same mindset so I think we can achieve great goals this season.

[Andreas Pereira says Manchester United fans are not the only ones hurting during a difficult period for the club] We know the fans are hurting. The players and everyone at the club, here at the training ground, hurts. Me, even more, because I’m a Manchester United fan and a player and I am here at the Aon Training Complex every day. It hurts not getting the results. Everybody is doing their best to get it turned around and I am sure it will happen. Everyone is working hard, even harder, and, sooner or later, when everyone is working hard, things get back to good ways. It’s a perfect game against Liverpool, a perfect derby, and we have to build up for it

[Liverpool could be considered the worst possible opponents for a team scratching around for form] I think you can compare it with Boca Juniors-River Plate, Santos-Corinthians, Flamengo-Fluminense. It’s one of the biggest derbies like El Clasico - Real Madrid versus Barcelona - and one of the biggest games, not only in England but in the world. Everyone will be watching and it’s most important for us, and for the fans. I always watched these games at home with my dad and my family. You know, I was always very curious and supporting United

[Pereira added on the importance being placed on the meeting with the Reds] I think it means a lot to us. It’s one of the most important games of the year - it’s the derby and we absolutely want to win this game. We will do absolutely everything to win it. I know we’re not living the best moment right now, and we’re not getting results, but I think it’s a derby and it is always a different game. Absolutely, we want to win it - everyone at the club, everyone in the team and the staff. We all want to do everything to win the game and it can be a nice bounce back and provide a nice lift for us to start getting results

[Beckham & Scholes set the standard for Pereira as he follows in illustrious footsteps at Man Utd] That’s difficult, but I would say Paul Scholes and David Beckham. Of course, you have Giggsy who was also unbelievable but I look more at the players in my position so it’s more Scholesy or Becks for me

For me, United is the biggest club in the world. We have everything. We have the best coaches, the best players, the best fans and we’re known everywhere. I think if you’re a footballer, you want to play in big stadiums like Old Trafford. I think everybody wants to play for United. This talk actually happened when Timothy Fosu-Mensah came here. I was in the reserves and he was visiting. I didn’t know him at the time but I speak Dutch so he asked me what the club was like. He had offers from other clubs but I told him, ‘You should come here, it’s the best club in the world. Don’t even think about it. If you come here and if you work hard, you will get a chance in the first team.’ Then he came, and to this day he remembers my advice

The first day I arrived, I met all the players and I was very nervous. I couldn’t believe it when I was in the training gear and I looked down and I saw the badge on. I thought, ‘I’m at Manchester United. I need to pinch myself.’ Then I said, ‘Now I need to work hard because I want to play in the first team and I want to get there’. I remember the first training session, we played rugby! It was, for me, different because I had never really played it so I wasn’t used to it. It was a nice experience and it helped me to get tough

[Andreas Pereira says Man Utd have evolved under current boss] We have evolved a lot (under Solskjaer). Mentally we are more patient, we work for each other more and more and we have more confidence on the pitch. The way we play is the United way. On the counter-attack. We are very direct and the manager’s played a massive part in that. Hopefully, we can keep that going and he can stay for many more years

He has helped me a lot. The manager and his staff have helped me. As a player I have grown. Especially mentally, I am much stronger than last season. I have been playing a lot more this season and in every game my confidence is higher and higher and I can show the abilities I have got to everyone
<br[Andreas Pereira says he is hoping to see Solskjaer get them back on the trophy trail in 2020] We are desperate to win a trophy. Everybody at the academy is raised to win trophies. We have been winning trophies since the academy until the reserves and we want to do it now with the first team

[Andreas Pereira thanks Michael Carrick and Solskjaer] Michael has been a massive help to me. He helps me every day in training. He coaches me how to receive the ball and how to break teams down. He played a massive role in the same position I play and he has helped me a lot

I study clips of him and I study clips of Paul Scholes and all the United players who played in the middle. But it is especially Michael because he was an expert in turning around and breaking teams down, especially when they are camped in front of their own area

At home, I am always watching football so I watch video clips, particularly of players who played in the number 10 role like Wazza (Wayne Rooney). I try to study everyone. At the club, they also try to help me as they show me videos of myself playing and how I have to do it

[Man Utd midfielder Andreas Pereira wants to finish season ‘even if it means playing every day’] For me, I want to finish the season as quickly as possible. I understand it’s a difficult time now and the health of people is more important. But I would like to finish the season, even if it means in a week playing a game every day. I want to finish the season. It will be a bad feeling if we have to void the season.

[Worries over player fitness if the season were to return] I think we could cope. If you see now, everybody has had a lot of rest, we have recovered, players who were injured are coming back. We have big squad and we can deal with games, two days in a row or maybe every two days. I don’t think it will be a problem. It would be difficult to accept that the season is void

[Andreas Pereira has vowed to give his all for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United and is determined to stay at the club to help them win trophies] Even when I came to United at such a young age, going to United it, of course, a massive club, but I know that they are willing to give youth a chance. That is what happened with me. Ole knows we will always be there for him. The young players give our faith and do everything to protect him, as he gives all his trust to us. I’m very honoured and that’s why, as well, I want to stay at United. I want to fight for him, win games and win trophies.

Getting there, it’s tough but staying at the top is the most difficult. You can get some stick sometimes. You can get glory days, bad days but the most important thing is to just keep your head down and keep working because at the end of it all if you work hard everything is going to be fine

[Pereira was keen to repeat the message of staying at home to help stop the spread of the Covid-19 virus] Just stay at home and enjoy your family’s home. Just be a little bit more patient. We are a bit frustrated as well but, as soon as we are going to play the first game next season, or end this season - as we don’t know - we’ll give everything and you’ll see us play well at Old Trafford and win games

[Manchester United midfielder Andreas Pereira outlines future plans to join Santos] My whole family is from Santos. Since I was little, I grew up watching this. I was becoming a player and I always dreamed of playing for Santos, but I went to Manchester. I got older, then everyone said, ‘Why won’t you play for our Santos?’ I want to go, but I can’t now. I want to play football in Europe, and then I’ll go. I want to go to Santos to win. I’m not going there to finish and to ‘steal’ money. I’m going to play well, so people say: ‘Remember Andreas at Santos?’

[Pereira says Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has told him he would be welcome to switch allegiances] The Belgium coach spoke to me after I was called up. He asked what the situation was, if there was any chance I could play for Belgium. I said that I’m Brazilian at heart, my family is Brazilian. I was born in Belgium but I never intended to play for Belgium. I never thought about that. He said that, if I don’t feel happy one day, if they treat me in a way I don’t like, they will always have open arms

[Andreas Pereira says Manchester United are looking sharp ahead of their Premier League return as they prepare to face Tottenham] As soon as we knew that the season was going to start again, we were very hyped and wanted to play. Everybody is very sharp in training, everyone has been paying a lot of attention. We’re very eager for it to start again. It’s very important, the game against Tottenham. It feels like when you come back from pre-season, the match rhythm will not be 100 per cent but it will be hard for them as well. We want to make it a tough job for them, we want to win. We have a Champions League spot to go for, and we have the FA Cup and the Europa League. We’re going full out in these two months really. We need to push as a squad and make it the best two months we can get
