Desc There were many doubts over new Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel when the club signed him from China last summer. The €20 million (£18m/$23m) arrival had never played in one of Europe’s top five leagues, but he quickly silenced any critics with goals on both his cup and league debuts for Dortmund. The Belgium international helped make Lucien Favre’s team tick in 2018-19, finishing with the highest passing percentage out of just six players across the league who attempted more than 2,000 passes (93 per cent completion rate).

[Axel Witsel speaks about his expectations for Russia 2018] I think for our team, for our generation it will be the most important World Cup. I think the team is ready, we are more experienced because we played in Brazil and in the European Cup in France. So I think we are ready but we have to play like we always do and game by game try to do better than in the last World Cup in Brazil

[Sancho’s team-mate Axel Witsel predict the attacker will go on to become one of the greats of the game] I think he’s one of the best of his generation. He still has a lot to improve, to progress, because he is really young. But I’m sure in his position, as a winger, he will be one of the best

[Axel Witsel has urged Borussia Dortmund to come back stronger next season after they closed the Bundesliga campaign with a 4-0 hammering at home to Hoffenheim] There is nothing to explain. They were more aggressive, had more motivation. We didn’t want to end the season like that. It wasn’t enough without a ball. We all have to defend together. If only a few players run and defend, it’s difficult to win a game. We may be the better team on paper, but it is different on the field

[Looking back on the season as a whole] We had ups and downs in the first half of the season. The second half was better, but of course we can do it better. Next season we will start the fight with [Bayern Munich] again
