[Bernd Leno happy to see smiles back on Arsenal faces under Ljungberg] From the first day he [Ljungberg] said he wanted to see laughing faces, to see a good atmosphere. We had a bad time, we are all human and it is not easy. It was not like we did not try, but it just did not work. I do not know what the club is deciding. We only have to focus on now.

Freddie is doing a very good job. The team know about his quality and the way they want to play. We want to play with possession, keep the ball and also press very high, and also with transitions. At half-time [on Monday] Freddie was talking and analysing. He showed us some situations that we needed to be braver. We did this. It is a good feeling, we all missed the feeling. He was calm but in a very straight way. It was not like everyone was not trying, but you could feel that we did not play in a free way and he made us more free to play. You could see this more in the second half. After the second and the third goal you could see how we can play with more confidence. This is the real Arsenal

[Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno believes that the club’s problems go far beyond the identity of their manager] After four or five minutes the game was done. I think in the first half we deserved this result. In the second half we couldn’t touch the ball and also couldn’t create the chances. At the moment we have to say there is a gap between [the top] teams. We have the quality but when you see the games we miss intensity, we are not fresh in our minds. It is good we have a week to work a little bit and speak about this situation, we have to change something in our minds

It’s good to know what is in the future or in the next weeks but that is not our job - it is the job of the club. We accept Freddie, he is doing a good job. I don’t think the manager is the problem, everyone has to look at himself and be honest at himself. If everyone was giving everything today - I think the mentality is the main thing

[Bernd Leno is convinced Mikel Arteta can still guide Arsenal to a top-four finish this season] Of course, because I think there are still many games. We play against all the top six. We have a lot of opportunities to win games against them. We still believe. It is in our hands. We have to show mentality, we have to play good football and I think then we will have opportunities. When we just speak about tactics or quality or what was in the past, it doesn’t matter. I think the only way is that we work hard, that we get back our strong mentality and then I think I am confident we can reach our target

It was completely different to other games. We didn’t let them have chances, like Freddie [Ljungberg] said and the new manager. I think the line-up was very good because everybody was fighting for the team and we showed great mentality. Unfortunately we didn’t score, but I think at the end we were happy with our performance and especially with our mentality

[On not having to make a single save] There was no time for coffee because I knew I had to be focused on the game. Maybe there could be one shot and I have to be there because Everton have good quality and good players. So I had to stay focused. Of course, it was not easy, but I think the team defended very well - not only the defence but in general all my team-mates worked very hard, also the players who came in. I think this is the only way we can play

[Arteta spoke to the players before and after the match at Goodison Park] He didn’t speak too much about quality or about tactics, he just said he wants to see players who run, who support their team-mates, who defend the goal or in general play as a team. I think this is the way he needs to push us and I think it was a good point that he pushed us on Saturday. We understood the message

[Bernd Leno says he never feared Aubameyang & Xhaka exits] Of course there are many rumours and other people talk about this. But you never had the feeling that any player was thinking about another club or wanted to leave, was refusing to train or they didn’t have the mentality in the training. Everybody can see we have a new manager and a new mentality. We want to build something here at Arsenal. You can see on the pitch all these rumours [don’t affect] these players - they are fighting, they are leading the team and this is the only way

I think we have chances in every game, we just have to take the chances. On Sunday we had chances to score maybe two or three, but I think everything comes further along. Of course we need to score more goals because defensively we are doing very good and offensively I think we can score more. But we are on the right way

[Bernd Leno says Arsenal can’t afford to take too long to adjust to life under Mikel Arteta as there are still titles on the line this season] Of course this process takes time but we have to win games. In the Europa League and FA Cup we have so many difficult games. We saw last season that in the Europa League quarter-finals and semi-finals you get Champions League teams. They are all playing for the title and the [Europa League] final was Arsenal against Chelsea [last season], so it was a very, very big game. We want to have this final again and also in the FA Cup. Everybody told me that the FA Cup final at Wembley is unbelievable with the atmosphere and it is also a trophy, a title and we are looking forward to playing these games. Hopefully we can a win title this season

[Bernd Leno admits that life had become a little confusing at Arsenal towards the end of Unai Emery’s reign] He has, in this short time, a big impact because you can see the intensity we play with. Also the structure in the team and the mentality out of the pitch. Before it was, I don’t want to say a mess, it was a little bit confusing, everybody was doing different things and we were not a team – not in the dressing room, not on the pitch, and you could see this.

I think with Mikel it changed completely. The first day he came he was not talking too much about tactics, he was talking about how we behave in the dressing room, when we go to the games we have to be more professional, more like a team. I think it is not only what he has learned from Pep Guardiola, when you talk with all of the people that worked with him, they say he’s a very clever guy with tactics and how to improve players. At the moment we don’t have to talk about the Premier League title because Man City and especially Liverpool, they are too strong. Honestly, we have to say that they are on another level

[Bukayo Saka is enjoying an impressive rise to prominence and he was effective again on Thursday] Bukayo is an outstanding player and hopefully he stays very long at Arsenal. He’s very important and I think today his cross was very good for Laca [Lacazette] to score. We are happy we now have the advantage, the away goal, and at home we want to beat them again and go to the next round

[Bukayo Saka first appearance of the season came in September when he was handed a start in the Europa League by Unai Emery and he immediately set the tone for what was to come by scoring one and setting up two in the 3-0 win at Eintracht Frankfurt] Bukayo is an outstanding player. Hopefully he stays very long at Arsenal. He is very important for us.

[Bernd Leno says Arsenal’s 1-0 win against West Ham was a clear example of the new mentality Mikel Arteta has instilled in the team] Yes, I think you could see many games like this. Also Chelsea away, 2-2, it was only a mentality game with the red card and yes, I think we are happy about our mentality. But I think the manager also said that everything was not perfect. We have to work on many things and improve many things. It was not our best game but the mentality was good. You have these type of days when you don’t play your best game but the result is the most important thing

It was a very disappointing day for us. When you score in extra time and then you concede in the last minute it is always disappointing. Nobody could sleep very well after this disappointing night. But as a football player you have to look forward. Sometimes it’s very difficult, it was very difficult. But football can change so quick. We are out of this competition, we have to finish with the Europa League. We have to look forward and this was the mindset from the manager. And I think the manager he did a very good job to get us up again and you saw the answer against Portsmouth and now again [against West Ham]. So you can see this team is alive and has a very good mentality.

I think it’s all about us, if it will be realistic or not. There is still a gap but I think we have ten games left so we have enough opportunities to reduce this gap and go to the Champions League place. Maybe fifth is enough, I don’t know, it depends on Manchester City. But I think it’s all in our hands

[Arsenal and Germany team-mate Bernd Leno says Mesut Ozil’s creative ability is underrated by many fans] I think his passing is very good, it’s unbelievable. Of course, in the last time he didn’t make too many assists but when you see how many chances he creates, he is maybe playing the one pass before the assist. He brings his team-mates into good positions and many people, they don’t see this. But when you see him every day in training and also on the pitch, you can feel how important he is and how important his passing is for the team.

[Bernd Leno says Gabriel Martinelli has everything to be world class] I think he can become a world-class player. World class, 100 per cent, because he has talent, he has quality but I think his biggest strength is his mentality. He is working unbelievably [hard]. I remember in our bad time when we struggled a lot, he was working so hard. He was one of the leaders! At 18 years old, he came from nowhere, nobody knew him before and to play like this, and to behave like this, it’s very good to see. I think if he keeps doing like this, he will be an unbelievable player

I think for the fans it’s very good because you have a very young team, they can develop very quickly. You can see they compete, they are playing a lot of games. Saka is very young, Joe is still very young, Reiss had experience in Germany and he is doing very well now. We can have a very good time with them. Of course, they need time, you have to give them the time and if they have a good mentality, we will be successful with them.

[Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno says his Liverpool counterpart Alisson is the best in the Premier League] For me it’s clear, it’s Alisson. He’s good at everything and his stats are also very good. He’s played a number of big games for Liverpool and for me it’s clear that he’s the best goalkeeper at the moment. Liverpool have conceded the fewest goals of any other team in the Premier League this season, and Alisson is largely behind this achievement

[Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno says that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the Gunners’ outfield player who would be best in goal in case of emergency] I think it’s Auba. I don’t really know about his quality as a goalkeeper - I don’t know who could be the best - but I saw that many times Auba would make some good saves after training in free-kick challenges. He was flying very well. I was very impressed and he could be a good choice if I got a red card and we made three changes already. If I wasn’t a goalkeeper, I would play as a centre back. First of all, I don’t like running! At centre back, you don’t run as much as anyone else. I also like to challenge, to tackle and I think that this position suits me because I’m a bit taller like a defender

This is difficult to say. I have some special moments like the day I signed. In this moment I felt very proud to join Arsenal. I think also the double save against Tottenham. Saves are always special but in this big game, making this save and then hearing the fans screaming my name. One or two days after it was my birthday and my friends came over. They were in the middle of the fans when they went crazy and took a video of it to show me. Then also, the first time the fans were screaming my name. It felt like when I really arrived, when the fans accepted me, my performance and my personality. These are the top moments

[Arsenal and Germany goalkeeper Bernd Leno says Bayern Munich’s dominance of the Bundesliga is boring and sad] Bayern is already a champion, as always. It is boring and sad. One wishes an exciting championship fight, but I don’t see any exciting championship in the near future. Bayern is too strong there

I really wanted to go abroad, London is a mega city for me

[Bernd Leno is refusing to give up on Arsenal’s bid for Champions League qualification] I hope we can get into Europe. We’re not ruling out the Champions League places because we might get it with just fifth place, given Man City’s possible ban. We were in decent form before the break, I just hope we can get back to that when we return and end up in a European spot. It’s a great way to start because we have to go full throttle right from the off - they’re an absolutely top team. It’ll be strange to play again after such a long time out and with such little time to prepare, but I’m optimistic about the rest of the season

Here in England it was a lot worse than in Germany. I was at home for nine weeks with my wife and my dogs and we had no contact with anyone. It really struck me how much I missed football, the atmosphere in the stadium and that boost of adrenaline you get from playing competitive football. I’m just thankful we can get going again next week.

[Bernd Leno says Arsenal players are idols and role models for equality] We as players have so many people looking up to us as idols. We have to show, as Arsenal, that we support you; it doesn’t matter if you are black or white, or what your religion is. It is sad in 2020 we are still discussing these things, but this is the reality and we have to keep pushing on this. It doesn’t matter if you are black or white, we have to respect each other and everybody should have the same chances in life

[Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s return to Premier League action on Wednesday against Manchester City] Everyone is getting more excited [about the season beginning]. I’m looking forward and probably everybody in the world is looking forward that Premier League football is going back at least to something like normal. Everything will be new at the beginning with the match-day protocols. But it was the same with training and you get used to it. And we’re all glad we can do what we love and play football again. I’m sure that everything will go in a good way and that everything will go smoothly like in Germany. We as players have a good feeling that everything is safe

We are prepared for the situation without the fans, we have worked during the break on our mindset and our leadership. We can surprise City because nobody has the rhythm. I’m sure we can have a good start. Mikel (Arteta) knows every player and he knows the manager better than anyone. I think Mikel will have a good game-plan and at this level we think we are a very good team
