Desc Smalling proved to be one of the brightest lights during David Moyes’ doomed tenure, and his consistent performances thereafter saw him become first choice for both club and country. [Quotes on John Terry] Anyone who wants to be a centre-half would have to say that John Terry is a role model. John has never had blistering pace, but he didn’t need it because he’s always in the right place for every situation. He also gets the other players to work around him and that has enabled him to have such a great career. John is a class performer. He has played all season and, while Chelsea’s results haven’t been great, I have no doubt that he’s definitely got more years in the locker. I would put him right up there with the very best

[Chris Smalling says ‘bring it on’ to Lionel Messi challenge] It’s something to relish I think. This season, we have been lucky enough to face [Cristiano] Ronaldo, [Kylian] Mbappe and they are all challenges that I definitely relish and I think players at this club relish. I say bring it on

[Chris Smalling on Daley Blind] As he is naturally a midfielder, he has that passing range and ability down to a tee. He brings a lot to our defensive line in being able to play the ball out and cut through teams

[When he first broke into the United side, Rashford was praised for his fearlessness, with teammate Chris Smalling telling MUTV] You can see he’s always on the [defender’s] shoulder. I think if I was up against him, he’s one who would certainly put fear in you. He’s done it in the previous games as well, so it’s great for him and great for us

[Chris Smalling has no regrets at leaving Man Utd ‘comfort zone’] Some English players have gone abroad but not many. It was a challenge that I wanted to take. I’m someone who definitely lives by not having any regrets. I like new things maybe out of my comfort zone and show people that anything is possible

I can understand everyone’s position if they’ve not got that full clarity. Everybody wants to be as informed as possible. Fortunately, here at Roma, I feel like they have that clarity. They’ve kept us in the loop. We had regular meetings with the CEO [Guido Fienga], talking about different measures, and keeping us up to date. That’s been very useful to know their discussions with the league and the doctors and they are relaying that straight back to us. That’s why I feel like a lot of players here are comfortable about coming back, knowing the different measures. It’s all been listed, but if some players at some clubs who don’t have that all in place yet then I can understand them being a bit fearful until that’s put in place. I’d want the same as well
