[Tottenham defender Danny Rose has revealed that a club wanted to check that he was ‘not crazy’ during transfer talks held in the wake of his mental health admission in 2018] It was because of what I’d said and what I’d been through. I was embarrassed, as whatever I’ve been through I like to think it doesn’t affect me doing my job. I still know I’ll always give 100 per cent.
In the end they didn’t put a bid in. But to think that people assume I might be crazy is embarrassing and I’m still angry about it to this day. If that opportunity came around again I’d definitely say no now

[Newcastle defender Danny Rose says it is bizarre for Premier League players to be criticised amid the coronavirus pandemic] When I woke up this morning, seeing comments from people at the House of Parliament, we sort of feel our backs are against the wall. Conversations were being had before people outside of football were commenting. All that’s happened is a discussion. I just got off the phone to Jordan Henderson about 20 minutes ago and he is working so hard trying to come up with something. It was just not needed for people who are not involved in football trying to tell footballers what to do with their money. I found that so bizarre.
[But Rose says he would be happy to donate some of his salary to health workers who are exposed to the disease] I can only speak for myself, but I have no problems whatsoever contributing any of my wages to people who are fighting this on the front line, and to people who have been affected by what’s happening at the minute

[Danny Rose has launched a furious tirade against plans to bring back Premier League football, insisting it should be far from a priority] The government is saying we are bringing football back because it is going to boost the nation’s morale. I don’t give a fck about the nation’s morale. People’s lives are at risk. Football shouldn’t even be spoken about coming back until the numbers have dropped massively. It’s bllocks. We’ll see. I’m supposed to be tested on Friday, so we will just have to wait and see. I didn’t even listen to the announcement [on Sunday] - no football until June 1 or something. I don’t even pay attention to any of that. I’m sad people are getting sick and being affected but football should be the last of things that needs to get sorted.

[Danny Rose warns Premier League stars are being used as coronavirus lab rats] I’m dying to get back to football. I know people are obviously going through this coronavirus pandemic a lot worse than me, so I don’t want to be here complaining about anything. But just off the fact people are suggesting we should go back to football, it’s basically like we’re guinea pigs or lab rats, that we’re going to go back to this phase and see if it works or not. I can just imagine people at home saying they [footballers] earn this amount of money so they should be going back. So for stuff like that where I just think ‘this is not worth the hassle’, I could be potentially risking my health for people’s entertainment, and that’s just not something I want to be involved in, if I’m honest with you.
I didn’t think too much to it and then I was having my breakfast the next day and saw Steve Bruce coming up on my phone. I spoke to him and he said I need to word things a bit better if I’m going to do things like that. He explained the measures they’re going to, to try and make everything safe, but obviously I’ve seen the headlines and I do - we do, as footballers and people in the public eye - we have a platform and maybe I could have worded what I said a little bit better. But I do feel exactly how you’re feeling, that six weeks ago [health secretary] Matt Hancock was saying footballers need to halve their wages and now six weeks later we’re needed to try to entertain people. People need to make their minds up: it’s one or the other

[Danny Rose says he believes former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino will eventually coach Manchester United] Without a doubt, without a doubt. Eventually, United. Even under Poch, he had a different culture to the British. It wasn’t that he didn’t understand it. You know the British like to have a drink, it was just something that he couldn’t get his head around
He wasn’t willing to compromise on that, either. Even after we beat Ajax in the Champions League semi-final and it was obviously the biggest night of our careers. On the flight home we weren’t allowed a drink. It was ‘no you’re training tomorrow, you’re up at 9’. It’s just one of those things. British managers do different things. Foreign managers, sometimes it’ll take them time to adapt or for the players to adapt to them. It’s something that is just one of those things in football
In the changing room and we went back out to the fans, for that hour I felt on top of the world. Then we got back on the plane and we were trying to have a drink and he wasn’t having it. He was like ‘No, we’ve got a game on Saturday’. The night was over.
I do fully respect what he’s done but at the same time with that Champions League semi-final we’d been together since we were 22 or 23, so for me that’s all I’d known for the past five or six years, you’d play and then get one day off if you’re lucky and that’s it, you’re grafting for the rest of the week.
So now I’m at Newcastle, you’re getting two or three days off a week if you win, so I’m thinking what’s going on here then? It’s a shock to the system. We’d only get one day off if we were lucky under Poch. Even in international breaks, he’d see the ones who would go away as having a holiday because training isn’t as hard with your national team. So if you weren’t in the national team you were getting beasted in training. You’d only get Saturday or Sunday off and then you’d get somewhere like Liverpool where they’re getting seven to 10 days off. We’ve been programmed a certain way in the last five or six years and going to Newcastle it’s different. I’ve missed playing for a British manager and I’m getting used to it again

[Danny Rose has revealed that Harry Maguire was a target for Mauricio Pochettino before the England defender joined Leicester City in the summer of 2017] Touching on Harry, we played Hull at White Hart Lane, and I think we won 2-0 or 3-0, I think Steve Bruce was manager, and straight away our gaffer was all over Harry. I think [Spurs] were in for him. Once Poch had taken a liking to him, I started to notice him straight away
