[David Luiz, when asked about similarities between Jose Mourinho and Laurent Blanc] Well, they are both ugly

[David Luiz explains why he returned to England for a second spell with the newly-crowned Chelsea FC] I was winning everything in Paris. I was there for two years and won all the titles in France. I had a great life, great credibility with the club … I had everything. But then I took a risk to come back to the one country that was not that happy with me. Where they always criticised me a lot even after winning the Champions League, the Europa League or where I’d played all the games. That’s why it was a risk. And I love the risk. If you don’t take risks in your life – in your professional life but also in everyday life – you never feel anything new, so I [chose to] taste something new. I don’t like to stay always with the easy life, but I’m happy now because I took the right decision

[David Luiz said in 2017 about typical Brazilian defenders] In Brazil they say defenders must be pessimists. I am an optimist in my life. I’m positive. I always think and dream of the best things. I don’t want to take my small boat and go against a wave of 20 metres. Maybe I can go around the sides, and we’ll arrive. I’ll try to find a way

In Benfica my job was to drive the ball to the halfway line. Chelsea didn’t have that plan, but sometimes I would do it anyway

[Arsenal will trigger a one-year extension in David Luiz’s contract after he emerged as a key figure in Mikel Arteta’s squad] I can be honest with you, the first three days or week was not easy to understand all the emotions or how I was feeling, because everybody knows my history with Chelsea. I had this connection with everyone at the club. It was so massive and big and I was missing every single one. Every text message I was receiving, people were saying: ‘Come back, come back, come back, come back, we are here for you’.

I give you the example of a gentleman there who is 75 years old. He was taking breakfast with me at the time when he had the opportunity. He was texting me: ‘I am still waiting for you here to take the breakfast again’. This kind of thing was so difficult for me, because I am someone that sees the heart as the most important thing.

But then after that, in the professional way, I was saying: ‘It is a new moment for you. It is another big thing for you to do. Maybe if you stay in the comfort zone it is not going to be the best thing for you?’. If you look at my history of life I was never wishing to stay in the comfort zone. It was a top decision. [Arsenal] are a big club. I want to make this club improve and to shine again. The first days were difficult but after that I started to adapt. ‘Now I am so happy and I want to do big, big things with Arsenal

[David Luiz hails ‘amazing’ Arsenal boss Arteta & insists he’s still improving under Spaniard] Mikel is doing amazing, I am enjoying being almost 33 years old and still learning and improving and to see how beautiful football is. Every day he changes something more and how a new idea and philosophy can still improve me as a person, as a player and as a leader. Mikel has tried to make us understand where to play and how to play. He gives us a plan: ‘If the team is like that, if there is a low block parking the bus how you can create, take the responsibility to make a risky pass’. If the pass arrives there then we create an opportunity and score the goal, if the pass doesn’t arrive there we can win the ball back quickly. Mikel, he brings a philosophy where everybody has to think for the best of the club, and make the club shine again. Everybody, not just players, everyone has to breathe this oxygen. It doesn’t matter where or when we lost it, we bring it back.

I want to be on the pitch. Doing what I love and making people happy. If we are going to play the season until the end I want to try and be in the Champions League with Arsenal

[When asked what Brazilian supporters make of the Gabriel Martinelli’s progress at Arsenal] Now they are very proud. I didn’t know [about him]. I had heard some things about a little guy doing well. When I saw him I said ‘wow’. Not just because of the talent as a footballer [but] especially because of the mentality. I think he wants to improve, wants to learn and understands that he has the opportunity of his life. He wants to change his status, wants to be part of the team and part of the club - I think this is a very important thing for players to understand today

[Arsenal star David Luiz lifts lid on Blues exit] I was always very happy at Chelsea. And then the understanding of knowing that my cycle was over, even though I thought it wasn’t going to end that way, in a quick decision. I decided to leave Chelsea before I even had the door open at Arsenal. I know that Arsenal weren’t in a great moment, they had a weight on their defence, [when] I go there I’ll have to pay the restaurant bill without having eaten. But I’m going because I want something new for my life, I want to learn

[Luiz added on how difficult his first couple of months at Arsenal were under Unai Emery] It wasn’t easy at first. Not only [in terms] of adaptation, but about taking the criticism, the sadness of many Chelsea fans for not understanding my personal decisions. My respect and love for Chelsea has always been true. It was difficult to deal with the emotional part, then playing, things were not happening on the pitch, the results weren’t coming. Unai is a great coach and a great person, but things weren’t happening for him either. So you get into a stir and try to stay upright and strong. And I often wondered why this decision was made. Why is this happening?

[David Luiz on sleeping] If you sleep four hours happy, you’re going to sleep better than eight hours sad. The result of people when they are happy is 10 times better than when they are sad. For me, you have to have fun not just in football, but in life. That’s the most important thing – and Mikel has brought that back

[David Luiz reveals wish to return to Benfica] I was scared to leave Benfica, scared to start a new story. So Rui [Costa], the director of football, pulled me aside and talked to me. I was scared to bring my story at Benfica to a close, my love and the pleasure I had for living in that country and playing for Benfica. I told [Costa], ‘I don’t want to go, I want to stay, I want to stay.’ Rui told me something that touched my heart: ‘The doors will always be open for you. You need to show off your football to the whole world.’

I never lost my connection with Benfica, I have that in my heart, everybody knows I want to come back. I want to wear the Benfica shirt again and feel that sensation. The day I come back to the Estadio da Luz it is going to be very special, one of the greatest feelings of my life

[Arsenal not part of David Luiz’s retirement plan as he approaches final year of contract] I always said that I would like to end my career at Benfica. In football everything changes, what is true today, tomorrow is a lie, but my feeling is not! I love Benfica. My dream is to step on the pitch of Estadio da Luz in their colours. For all that I lived and felt, for what Benfica is in my life and in my history, for everything, Benfica is bigger than any player

I always want to play. I always play in the way the coach wants to play. It doesn’t matter the side, it doesn’t matter which position. You guys know I played a lot of positions during my career. I’m always ready for that.

[David Luiz contract decision sheds light on Arsenal’s difficult transfer future] Mikel is doing amazing. I am enjoying being almost 33 years old and still learning and improving and to see how beautiful football is. Mikel has tried to make us understand where to play and how to play. He gives us a plan and has brought a philosophy where everybody has to think for the best of the club. And the best for the club is to make the club shine again. It doesn’t matter when, or by who, that was lost. What matters is to bring it back

David’s a player that has won more trophies than anybody else in that dressing room. We have to use that in a very powerful way. I wanted him to step up, I wanted him to put all his qualities – his personality and his experience – towards the team and he made a big step forward. I am very, very pleased with him. In the games he has played under me so far he has been terrific. His attitude in training, the way he communicates with his team-mates, his desire to still learn, it’s superb. I am delighted with him.

[Arsenal defender David Luiz has revealed that he has held talks with Benfica over a possible return to the club this summer] I already spoke with Vieira about the return. My dream is to end my career at Benfica. When, I don’t know, but it will happen… it will, if President Vieira allows me and if the fans want me to come back. It will be one of the most beautiful moments of my career

[David Luiz has accepted responsibility for his role in Arsenal’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City] It was not the team’s fail, it was my fault. The coach is amazing, all the players did amazing, it was just my fault. I should have taken a different decision in the last two months. I didn’t - it was all about my contract. I don’t want to use that as an alibi or excuse, it’s just my fault and that’s it. I love to be here that is why I continue to train hard and that is why I came today. Nobody asked me to speak, it is up to me to show my face. I want to stay. The coach knows and wants me to stay, we are waiting for the decisions

[Gunners defender David Luiz on Arteta] He knows football, he loves football, he loves to work. This enthusiasm is contagious for everybody. What Mikel is trying to build is something big and I really believe in his philosophy. He has tried to help us and give us the direction and how to live life, how to be inside the club and for me, this is so important to have

[Arteta’s comments suggested that Luiz was not in the right frame of mind to play because of the doubts over his future, something the defender seemed to admit when he faced up to the media after the defeat] It’s not the team’s fault, it was my fault. I think the team did well, especially with 10 men, the coach is amazing, the players did amazing, it’s just my fault. I took the decision to play, I should have taken another decision in the last two months, but I didn’t. It was all about my contract, whether I stay or not. I have 14 days to be here, and that’s it.
