[Mesut Ozil makes history in Tottenham draw by becoming first player to assist in six consecutive Premier League games] I think the boys will be disappointed. That shows how well we are doing at the minute to come away to Arsenal and be disappointed with a 1-1 draw. It’s been a really good start to the season for us

[During England’s World Cup campaign in 2018, Dele Alli admitted that the Three Lions played the video game together in Russia – boasting that he was the most talented gamer, having won over 100 games] We’ve brought [Fortnite] here. I play and I’m better than Eric Dier! I have to say that I’m the best in the England squad. Just now we played me, Harry Kane, John Stones and Jamie Vardy against Harry Maguire, Nick Pope, Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier. It was the first to three wins and my team won

[Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli says he has set himself targets in terms of goals and assists as he looks to cement his place in the Spurs team] I’m not one for setting targets for goals and assists but I want to bring them back into my game. So of course, I’ve set myself a little target. I want to perform in every game, not just the big games. I feel good. I haven’t had any problems during pre-season. I’m feeling strong, I’m feeling fit. So, yes, I’m excited

[Alli believes pressure on his place is part and parcel of being a big-name player at an elite club] As top players we want to be challenging ourselves. We don’t want to stay still or think this is as good as we are going to get. We want to keep pushing on and having top competition. There are top players here and the players that are not in the starting 11 are training hard and working hard every day. Everyone is fighting to keep their places.

[Spurs reached the Champions League final last year, but Alli knows the team must strive to be better] Last year the Champions League was a big achievement for us. We were disappointed we didn’t go all the way and win it but we are going to have to channel that hurt we felt in that game and keep improving. We are not the finished article. We know that. We’ve got things to improve on

[Dele Alli is hoping to improve on his tally of 15 goals and assists from last season] Obviously because of my first two seasons and the amount of goals and assists I managed to get, people expect that to be my game. But as a midfielder, I don’t think that’s just what it’s all about. We have defensive work as well, making space for other players and getting goals and assists as well. That’s what I judge my game on. I do more for the team defensively. Maybe not getting as many goals and assists, but that’s not important to me. I make sure I help the team and try to keep my place in the starting eleven. I’m learning every year as a player and I feel more complete

[While he shoulders more responsibility on the pitch than at the beginning of his Spurs career, he doesn’t think he is too different off it] As a person, I haven’t changed. I’ve always been the same. I think I’m a more established player now, people know who I am a lot more but as a person, I’m as hungry as I always was when I first came here. I still want to achieve a lot more and that won’t stop. Every year I’ve learned so much with the players I’m playing with and the coaching staff. I feel like I’m in a great place to continue learning. I’m still young and excited to keep learning and improving as a player. It would be nice to get a few more goals and assists this season but that’s not what my whole game is based on

: 2019 08 04 Dele Alli has suffered a hamstring injury. He also feels it is part of a frustrating string of injuries for him

2019 08 07 Retrieve

[Dele Alli has revealed his excitement at the prospect of playing alongside new recruit Tanguy Ndombele] He seems like a very nice guy. Obviously we haven’t spent too much time together yet. He’s settled in very well – and fast – which is always good. He seems like an attacking player, you know it’ll be a pleasure to play with him. He looks to go forward quick, he’s strong, physical and very good on the ball as well. So, I’m excited by him

[Though content to play anywhere in Spurs’s midfield, the England international is clearly hoping for more than the five league goals he managed last season] I know it’s a bit of a cliche, but I think when you’re playing for a team like Tottenham with so many amazing players, you’re happy to be playing anywhere just to help the team. But you know I like getting goals and assists, playing higher up – if I’m needed. I enjoy that, but I think it varies depending on the game as well. Playing in different positions, sometimes you see the space in between the lines higher up, or sometimes it’s better to get the ball deeper. So I’m happy to play anywhere in the midfield row

[Having ended last season with defeat in the Champions League final to Liverpool, Alli admits the loss was extremely difficult to take] It was difficult, obviously, losing the game after all the hard work it was [to get there]. It was a hard time, but we had international [matches] afterwards so we had to switch our focus as quickly as possible and try to prepare for that. But, obviously, it’s difficult with it being such a big competition – and to lose in the final was hard to take. But I think as a team and individually we have to remember the feelings we had after that game. It was a horrible feeling and we have to channel that in the right way, try to use it to our benefit in the future

[When asked who his idols were when he was younger] Ronaldinho. And then Steven Gerrard. I used to watch a lot of YouTube clips of Ronaldinho when I was in school. [I liked] the way he enjoyed playing, he always looked like he was having fun. And that was the way I wanted to play as well. I’ve grown up playing a lot of street football, it was always fun and enjoyable and it was all about tricks and things like that. So when I started playing professionally I didn’t want to fall out of love with the game. I wanted to do what made me happy and you could see that with Ronaldinho. In everything he’s done, he looked like he was enjoying it. And then Steven Gerrard. His attitude and his mentality - his winning mentality. He was captain for England and Liverpool and you could see how much he wanted to win every game, so I felt like I could relate to both players

[Alli made his professional debut for League One side MK Dons back in 2012 when he was just 16] I think it was important when I was younger that I spent a lot of time playing against older players in League One. That prepared me for when I stepped into the Premier League and it built my character and made me stronger - I knew I had to fight for things, that was important. I knew it was a big league, the Premier League, and that it was a tough league with a lot of big players. So when I first came in it was important that I showed myself and that I couldn’t be bullied on the pitch - and I was ready for that

[Arsenal (2) vs (2) Tottenham Hotspurs. Dele Alli calls on Tottenham to show more maturity after Arsenal draw] Being 2-0 up we have to be more relentless defensively and a little more mature in the way we played in the second half. We knew with Arsenal getting the goal before half time they were going to come out and push for the second goal, which does create space for us to counter-attack. But at the same time we have to be cleverer with our defending and we’re obviously disappointed. I think the boys played very well in the first half. Obviously this isn’t an easy place to come, you just have to be a bit cleverer with the way you play. But we showed great character to not lose in the end because of the amount of possession they had. They are a talented team. Obviously we are disappointed but there are a few positives to take

[The England international came off the bench at the Emirates and was happy to be back in the fold after a lot of hard work behind the scenes] It felt good to be back today and I’d been doing a lot of hard work in training to ensure I’d come back ready, we were disappointed with the result but it is nice to be back. I think we’ve had some tough games to start. A point away at City is a good one, if you look at today we should’ve left with three, but it’s only a good point if we win the next game

[Dele Alli has backed world class Tottenham to turn around their struggling season after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Watford on Saturday] We know we have a world-class team. So it’s about showing what we can do when things don’t go our way. We made it difficult for ourselves against Watford. We controlled the game and bossed possession. It’s important we turn it around. We know how good we are, we just have to start showing it on the pitch. It was my first start and great to be back in the team but overall a disappointing result

[The goal was confirmed as legitimate by VAR, but the giant screen in the ground put a message which said ‘no goal’. Referee Chris Kavanagh clarified the decision via his earpiece before he told Watford to kick-off] Of course, it was a relief. There were two times the referee stopped it when he was making the decisions. We weren’t sure why. I was sure it didn’t hit my hand but then you start thinking did it? I tried to make sure it didn’t touch it so I could get the strike away

[Alli says Son Heung-min in tears after Gomes suffers horror injury] I didn’t want to look too much at what happened [to Gomes]. All I can do is send him my best wishes and wish him a quick recovery. Son is devastated, he’s in tears but it’s not his fault. He’s one of the nicest people you would want to meet and he’s not like that. He can’t even lift his head up he’s crying that much in the dressing room

[Dele Alli says he hasn’t paid too much attention to recent criticism of his Tottenham performances] It depends who from. There are certain people that obviously when they say something it hurts and it really kicks you up the backside and certain people who say stuff and you just roll your eyes at it and it’s in one ear and out of the other.

Growing up, coming from League One into the Premier League, you have to have a strong mentality. Granted, I didn’t have the best of seasons last season, I picked up a few injuries or whatever but that’s all behind me now and I’m working hard

Maybe last week against Liverpool I didn’t perform as well as I can but I think in the other games, Watford and in the Champions League, I think I’ve played well. People always say ‘can Dele get back to where he was?’ But I don’t want to get back to where I was, I want to go past that and keep improving. Some people just say it (criticism) because it’s their job to say something

[Alli thankful for Poch’s guidance at Spurs but ‘hungry’ for silverware under Mourinho] There’s no hiding how I feel about The Poch. He’s an amazing person who helped me a lot in my career and in [my personal] life as well. He’s someone who definitely means a lot to me. Poch built something amazing here and a lot of players owe a lot to him in terms of how much we’ve improved being here and playing at Tottenham. Words can’t describe how much we care about him, and how thankful I am and the team are to him as well. But this is football and things like this happen. We have to turn it around now and focus on the new challenges ahead. With the new manager coming in, we just have to build trust again and make sure we get ready and playing the way we know we can. It’s the start of a new chapter

[Alli was involved in the opening two goals and he believes some of the criticism aimed in his direction has been unfair] It’s been a very tough week for us emotionally. We’ve spent a long time with Pochettino and we were very sad but we had a job to do. We had to go out for the fans and try and stay as positive as we can. I think I have been performing well so far this season but I need to get better than my old form and get to my best. We have to carry on momentum and keep winning, we need to start that from now. There is still a lot to work on and we need to improve from now on

[Dele Alli slams his first-half performance in Olympiacos win] I suppose we were losing and the manager made a decision to bring on more of a forward-thinking midfielder and to be honest it could’ve been any of us to come off in that first 20 minutes, especially myself. I thought I was awful in that first 20 minutes, but it’s a team game and thankfully it [the change] worked. We didn’t start anywhere near good enough, we said at half-time we couldn’t perform any worse than we did in the first half, which was obviously a good thing to take into the second half, knowing we could only get better

[Dele Alli feels a combination of arrogance and overconfidence led to Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat against Manchester United on Wednesday] It’s difficult when you lose to take any positives. We know what we had to do. We had to match their energy. We lost the game not by them outplaying us - just attitude. We weren’t hungry enough and we were slow to every second ball, losing 50-50s. Maybe it was a little bit of arrogance and overconfidence. We’ve been playing well. You have to have confidence and arrogance in games like this but have to use it in the right way. We were a bit sloppy but you can’t do it in games like this or you’ll get punished. We’ve spent a lot of years together. We have to learn from this. Games like this bring your feet back down. We want to win any game and you want to win for the new manager at his old place

[Dele Alli says Tottenham’s run to the Champions League final is proof that they can survive without Harry Kane] People always have short term memories. Look at when Harry Kane got injured last time. Look what we did without him. We proved that it’s about the team, not a single player. Harry is a fantastic player and he would be a miss to anyone

[When asked for his assessment on Tottenham’s latest performance] Not enough runs in behind. Definitely not clinical enough. I look at myself first. I had that header and should have scored. The other attacking players may not be happy with the chances created as well, we weren’t creative enough

[Dele Alli has admitted that Tottenham have lost an unbelievable player in Christian Eriksen and wished his former team-mate well] He’s a worldie. I sent him a sad face on message, but I’m sure I’ll speak to him. He’s an unbelievable player. Yeah, he’ll be missed here, but this is a different step in his career

Since the start of the season there’s been a lot of speculation and now it’s gone through I wish him all the best, because he’s a great friend and a great person

[The 23-year-old’s form has improved noticeably since Mauricio Pochettino departed the club in November] The more mature I’m getting, the more I’m playing and learning not just about football but about life. It’s nice to be praised, but the same people can be waiting to shoot you down. So you keep working hard, and listen to the right people. Whoever you choose to listen to is the main thing – the manager, players, team-mates and people around the club, their opinion is important. I think I can always do better. I’ve played well in some games, and in others I know I haven’t played good enough

[Dele Alli feels that the current Tottenham side deserve a trophy] It says a lot about the character we have. To go from such a big game at the weekend, it’s easy to lose a game like this. We showed great character, at times a bit sloppy, but sometimes it takes one little switch and I think it was their second goal. It has been a long time coming, we’ve been one of the best teams in the world in the years we’ve been together, we deserve a trophy. But no-one is going to give it to us, we have to keep pushing – and not just for us, but for the fans – we have to win something

[Alli apologises for social media video mocking coronavirus crisis] I’d like to apologise for the video I posted on Snapchat yesterday. It wasn’t funny. I realised that immediately and took it down. I let myself down and the club. I don’t want you guys to have that impression of me, it wasn’t funny and I realised that straight away and took it down. It isn’t something that should be joked about. Sending all my love and thoughts and prayers for everyone in China

[Alli urges Tottenham to move on from striker injury crisis] I think obviously firstly it’s difficult to see Steve get injured, a new guy and a top guy. I’ve shown that I like scoring goals, although it’s probably not my most natural position. But we can’t just get our violins out. We need to step up

[Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli says Tottenham’s confidence has gone] It’s devastating. We had belief before the game, and we didn’t perform. This is the Champions League, if you don’t step up you will be punished. After the first one went in it didn’t change much but we conceded too many chances as a team. It’s hard to come back from those two goals. We had to show our maturity and fight and we didn’t do that. We apologise to the fans, to go out and lose like that, they deserve better. We have to fight. We can’t be in the position we are in in the league, we can’t hide. This hasn’t been a good season for us. The reality is we are in a bad situation, confidence has gone at the minute

We can’t use excuses, we still have quality on the pitch. We are missing good players but that happens. The players coming in have to step up and we haven’t done that today

[Alli checking in with Tottenham youngsters during ‘tough’ coronavirus lockdown] As a more experienced player, I’ve been speaking to the younger lads and just making sure they are alright. Even for myself, speaking to other people and trying to make sure I’m not in my little bubble here and that I reach out and communicate with other people. No one has been in this situation before, it’s tough for everyone to deal with, everyone is in the same boat. I think it is great that people are using social media and different platforms to find ways to try and help any way they can

Being stuck at home on your birthday isn’t the most ideal thing, but I made as much fun of it as I could. It was a little bit of fun, I tried to keep it light-hearted. We’ve been doing a Zoom session every morning at 11 o’clock, which is good because it keeps us in a routine. You have to get up early, eat well and do those sessions, which have been tough but also good as you get to see the boys every day.

Everyone realises how much they are helping; we cannot thank them enough for their dedication and they deserve all the credit they are going to get. It’s a real eye-opener, not only for footballers but for everyone. We take everything for granted, even being able to leave the house, let alone going to training every day and doing something I love so much. I will always be grateful for it.

Everyone is excited so we just need to dig in

[Tottenham midfielder Alli banned for Man Utd clash after mocking coronavirus in social media video] Dele Alli has been suspended for one match with immediate effect, fined £50,000 and must undertake an education course following a breach of FA Rule E3. The Tottenham Hotspur player denied that a social media post breached FA Rule E3(1), as it was insulting and/or improper and/or brought the game into disrepute, and constituted an ‘Aggravated Breach’, which is defined in FA Rule E3(2), as it included a reference, whether express or implied, to race and/or colour and/or ethnic origin and/or nationality. However, it was subsequently found proven by an independent Regulatory Commission.

It was not the FA’s case that Dele Alli was a racist. The FA’s case was that ‘without sufficient thought’, the player shared a video that depicted an ‘unacceptable racist stereotype’ in a misguided attempt at humour

He was selected, argued the FA for his appearance and not because there had been any coughing. That ‘targeting’ was said to be consistent with a racial stereotyping of persons of Asian appearance being connected with coronavirus

[Dele Alli, 24, put a video on Snapchat in February in which he joked about the outbreak and appeared to mock an Asian man] In response to the FA decision, I would like to apologise again for any offence caused by my behaviour. It was an extremely poorly judged joke about a virus that has now affected us more than we could ever have imagined. I’m grateful that the FA has confirmed that my actions were not racist because I despise racism of any kind. We all need to be mindful of the words and actions we use and how they can be perceived by others
