[Cristiano Ronaldo is an idol to millions, with Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot among those using the Juventus superstar as inspiration in his own career] My answer will be a little bit shocking for everyone! Ronaldo, for me, was the main one. He was my idol from day one. Not because he’s Portuguese, or his style of playing, but for his hard work. When you think of an athlete, a complete athlete, a complete footballer, you need to choose Cristiano. For me, he was the main inspiration to start playing football. Not because I want to be like him, I want to take my own path, but to get to know him and see how he works is unbelievable.

[He added, after making 23 appearances in 2018-19] Of course it’s hard to get to a big team. But then it’s harder to stay there because you are competing with a lot of footballers that are such hard workers. When you get to the big clubs, to the big leagues, you know that every day you need to get better and better and better. For me, I think the hard work is the main thing. Work hard and stay humble

[He said of his future ambition] I don’t like to think too big for now. I used to say ‘step by step’. Now I just try to focus on getting my opportunities and getting my minutes, and showing the manager what I’m capable of, that I can play here. Of course, when you lay down on your bed and you dream of the future, you dream of being one of the best right-backs in the world, being a reference for everyone. But that’s when you are in bed. When you wake up, you just need to put your feet on the ground and start working again, because every day is a fight for me. I think that’s the right way

[Diogo Dalot says he is determined to become Manchester United’s first-choice right-back despite the club’s pursuit of Aaron Wan-Bissaka] At the end of the season, the results were not what we wanted. But I can say it was a big season for me. Playing 23 games, and I only started playing properly and had my fitness in December, so it has been very good for me to have the opportunity to play in some different positions. I want to make my statement in the team and play as much as I can at right-back because I think it’s my best position. I just need to prove that to the manager with my work.

I know that some people thought I might come here and not play as much as I have this season. Some people thought I would play more. We all have different opinions but, overall, I think it was a very good season to settle in, start to know the club, know the league, know the atmosphere and now there is no excuse for next season. I just need to push on. My goal is to make right-back my own

[Prior to Aaaron Wan-Bissaka’s United arrival as speculation was building, Dalot revealed to the club’s official website he felt he had a strong debut season at the Theatre of Dreams] I can say it was a big season for me. Playing 23 games, and I only started playing properly and had my fitness in December, so it has been very good for me to have the opportunity to play in some different positions. I want to make my statement in the team and play as much as I can at right-back because I think it’s my best position. I just need to prove that to the manager with my work. I just need to push on. My goal is to make right-back my own

: 2019 08 02 Romelu Lukaku isn’t short of pace, and he has the data to prove it. Diogo Dalot was at the head of the pack with a top speed of 36.43kph, with Lukaku just behind him on 36.25kph. Tahith Chong, Marcus Rashford and new signing Daniel James, renowned for his explosive pace, rounded off the top five

[Diogo Dalot impressed by Harry Maguire’s ‘seamless’ Old Trafford transition] He’s so calm. He’s settled in perfectly. He’s a very nice guy, very humble, very quick to settle. We’ll keep helping him, but I think he’s already shown everyone on the pitch that he’s ready for this club

[Diogo Dalot says Manchester United are bigger than the Europa League] It’s a big competition, but not as big for this club. This club needs to be in the Champions League every day, every year, winning the Champions League and in Portugal it’s a little bit different. Of course it’s a big competition and if any team wins it’ll be a great achievement, but for this club when we are in it we just need to win it

[They are also due to face Partizan and AZ Alkmaar in Group L] Like I said, it’s not a competition as big as this club, but we’re definitely going there to face the challenge and we know that it’ll be difficult as well, because the teams are playing better and better. But we are going to face that challenge. It could be good for some players that want to get some minutes, but it could also be difficult for the travelling as well, but that’s football. That’s what we need to be ready for and I think it’ll be a very good challenge for us. It’s always difficult, because the Champions League third-place teams will come to play against us as well and it’s always difficult, but I think we’ll be ready

[Portuguese full-back Diogo Dalot was also in the starting line-up as United named their youngest XI in a Europa League or Champions League game since December 2012. However, it was all about team-mate Greenwood, who is set to take on more responsibility this term following the departures of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez] Marcus Rashford’s been working hard. Mason, Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes, the kids, myself, are working hard for this moment. He helped us today and I’m so happy for his goal

I think this club is all about that - if you’re good enough you’re old enough, that’s another thing we want to keep in this club. If we keep working hard, I think Ole will give us a chance

[Man Utd full-back Diogo Dalot ready to ‘give everything’ for Solskjaer after returning to full training] I hope [to be back] as soon as possible. Of course, that doesn’t depend fully, 100 per cent, on me. Of course the manager will decide that and my job is to give everything in training to be ready for him. And when the manager thinks I am ready, I will be there for sure

[When asked to comment on competing with Wan-Bissaka for a regular place in Solskjaer’s starting XI] I’ve said it a couple of times - for me, it’s the perfect way to develop and to grow. Talking about me of course, Aaron is in a very good mood and is playing very well and for me that makes me push harder and even harder. I like that. Like I have said, the easy way is always to run away from your problems. Of course, this is a good problem, not a bad problem. I think this will make me a better player, it will make Aaron a better player and make the team even better because this kind of competition is very good for the team

[The Red Devils were on a high prior to that contest after back-to-back wins over Tottenham and Manchester City] I think they were massive. The most enjoyable part is when you come to the training ground after games like that, everyone is happy and everyone is fully motivated to go again and you just want to be a part of that. Of course, when you are out [injured] and you can’t help the team, it’s difficult inside your mind but when the team wins it is a little bit easier because you know that the lads are doing good. When results are not so good, you wish you were there, you wish you could help the team. But again, it [being injured] is part of football and you need to focus on the other side of it because when that part comes, you need to be ready as soon as possible. You need to focus on your recovery so you will be there to help the team

[Dalot admits to ‘tough journey’ at Man Utd after breaking goal duck for Red Devils] Yeah, it was more like a release of something I’ve been feeling inside me after these three months. It’s been a tough journey, but like I said, these kind of things, a win and a goal make us feel like I’m doing a good job in fighting, working every day and taking the opportunities

[It was] like a big fight. If we didn’t come with the right desire and the right mentality we could make it more difficult. Like I said, we did a good job, right mentality, proper fight, respect the opponent and we get the win

Yeah, it’s why we’re here. It’s what we work for every day for these kind of games, for this kind of fight and now we’re focused on tomorrow and we go again on Wednesday

[Dalot sounds warning to £50m Wan-Bissaka as Man Utd right-back faces fight for place] Man United is always a tough place to play and the competition will always be there. And I’m making sure that Aaron will have competition as well and I will have competition when I might get my chance to play. That’s what keeps you strong at this level. Now it’s about keeping on working hard and hoping to get my opportunities and then grab them. I will keep fighting for the team and I want to keep pushing hard because I know I can play a lot of games here. Like I said in pre-season, I want to make a statement and fight for my position, and I want to show everyone that I can be a good right-back here

I know almost everyone! I know two or three of them better because I grew up with them playing in the national team and the older ones are players I always looked towards since I first got into the youth national team. I speak most of the time with [Ruben] Vinagre and [Pedro] Neto, they are the ones who are closer to my age. And of course, I grew up with [Ruben] Neves at Porto… I keep in touch with everyone. They all impress me. I grew up watching them and for me it’s very good that English football fans get to know them as well, to see they have value. For me, it’s a proud thing because it means more Portuguese players are in the Premier League - for our country it’s something to be proud of

[Diogo Dalot says Bruno Fernandes will play a key role in Manchester United’s rebuild over the next few years] The players knew Bruno was a very good player of course. It’s different seeing him abroad and then seeing him in training every day. He’s going to bring us a lot. I think he’s going to be a very good player for us and he’s going to help us build this team

[When asked if Fernandes can handle the pressure of performing] Yeah, he’s an experienced player. He played abroad a lot of years and you knew he could come here and do a great job. For me, it was not a surprise and I think that he is going to show us a lot more, but it was a fantastic debut for him

[Dalot says he will do everything he can to help Fernandes settle into his new surroundings] I had Portuguese coaches and staff when I came. They helped me a lot and when he came I try to do the same because he had a Portuguese guy, a player that he knew. I’m just trying to help him settle in with the whole team

[Dalot added on his own desire to feature in Solskjaer’s starting line up on a regular basis] it feels good to start feeling confident again and feeling comfortable with my fitness. I’m going to push hard and make sure that I deserve to play here. That’s why I signed to come here. I want to be the best right-back that I can be at Manchester United. The [injuries] are experiences that I need to live. It’s football and you need to be ready for this kind of challenge. I’m going to fight to play. I think I have the ability to play at right-back at this club and I need to show that

[Diogo Dalot says Bruno Fernandes has settled so well at Manchester United it is like he has been around for two years] Perfectly. I mean, it is like he has been here for two years already. He is getting on very well with the lads, it is very good to have him here, it is very good for me, very good for the team, he is a fantastic player and a fantastic person. So, it is one more to help the team

That is why we are here. Man United always fights for trophies and to win games. Those competitions, we want to win them with everything we have and the fight for the top four in the Premier League, because that is what we want as players. I think we have everything to do that

[Dalot admits to facing ‘big fight’ at Man Utd in bid to prove his worth] It was unbelievable. It was like a release of some frustration, as well. It’s been a tough one-and-a-half years here, because of the injuries, and it was a big fight for me since I came. That moment was a moment to be proud, as well, because scoring goals is always unbelievable and I didn’t score for one or two years, so it was a very good moment

[He admits as much, with Dalot having no choreographed routine ready] Oh, it was genuine. It was something I didn’t think about. When you’re showering before the game you imagine scoring goals and you imagine how you’re going to celebrate but that moment you just don’t think

[Diogo Dalot predics Bruno Fernandes will become a club legend at United] He’s a top guy, a top player. He is going to be a legend. He’s unbelievable, he can be better of course as well. He’s going to learn a lot from this club. I think he is a massive player to have in this team and he’s going to be a very good player for this club. He’s going to be [a legend], no doubt about that.

He was the captain at Sporting, of course he’s an experienced player as well, 25 years old, he’s played in Italy, he played in Portugal as well. He knows what he is doing. It’s going to be very good for him

[Diogo Dalot says he is ready to fight for the right-back spot in Manchester United’s line up] It feels good to start feeling confident again and feeling comfortable with my fitness. I’m going to push hard and make sure that I deserve to play here. That’s why I signed to come here. I want to be the best right-back that I can be at Manchester United. They [injuries] are experiences that I need to live. It’s football and you need to be ready for this kind of challenge. Of course I was young when all this happened but in my mind, I am always trying to be positive and in the future, I’ll be strong, physically and mentally. I think I have the ability to play at right-back at this club and I need to show that

I think that’s only a good thing because it ups the challenge a little bit more as well. We have a lot more players to each position and then we as a player need to make the task difficult for the manager, and he just has to pick 11, but we will make sure that everyone is ready and everyone is fully fit to play
