Desc Capello, or ‘Postman Pat’ as the team sometimes referred to him behind his back, was England’s second foray into the foreign manager market. The Italian’s first game brought the Euro 2008 co-hosts to the newly rebuilt Wembley in a friendly won with goals from Jermaine Jenas and Shaun Wright-Phillips. The team would go on to win nine of their 10 qualifying games for the 2010 Fifa World Cup

[Fabio Capello comments on new signing Patrick Vieira] Vieira is a very important player. At the heart of midfield, his presence is felt not only for his technical value but for his physical quality. Vieira brings something extra that new signings have to bring

He was young and his path was blocked by Marcel Desailly and Demetrio Albertini back then. But you could already see that he had quality, otherwise I wouldn’t have considered him as Frank Rijkaard’s heir

[Fabio Capello says May The Best Team Win Between Manchester United & Barcelona] There are so many champions who can turn around a game. They are certainly the most entertaining teams in the world and I hope the final will be as much. Manchester United are a very solid side and are confident of their strength as English and European champions. All the players seem in fine form and I hope that Rio Ferdinand will recover in time [to play], as he is a key man. Barca have some problems at the back with [Dani] Alves and [Eric] Abidal suspended, Silvinho should step in, but he is stronger going forward than in defence

[Capello’s Milan thrashed the Catalans 4-0 in 1994, but the ex-Roma and Juventus tactician feels it will be a tight encounter at the Olimpico tonight] Barca were arrogant and took to the pitch thinking they were already the winners. There is not a hint of arrogance in both sides this time around and I don’t think there will be a big score. It is a balanced match with [Lionel] Messi’s creativity and [Samuel] Eto’o and [Thierry] Henry’s pace. But the Red Devils also have lots of potential up front and perhaps one of the best back lines in the world. Who will I be rooting for? Some of my Lions play for Manchester, but [Barcelona coach Josep] Guardiola played under me at Roma. May the best team win

[on Michael Laudrup] (After the 4-0 win of Milan over Barcelona in the 1994 Champions League final) Laudrup was the guy I feared but Cruyff left him out, and that was his mistake.

[Fabio Capello on why England underperform at major tournaments] Because they’re tired. They’re the least fresh of any of the competing national sides, because their league doesn’t have a break. It’s like when you’re driving a car: if you stop halfway to put fuel in then you’ll definitely get where you want to go, but if you don’t then there’s always the chance you’ll be running on empty before you reach your goal. In my opinion, the football played in the first half of the English season is much better than in the second half. And because of that, if you want to be a competitive team in the Premier League, you need a really big squad, which is a luxury you don’t get with the national team.

[Fabio Capello, who coached the likes of Alessandro Del Piero, Raul, [Ronaldo](ronaldo.html), Francesco Totti and Marco van Basten, on who was the best forward he worked with] Technically the best? Absolutely [Ronaldo](ronaldo.html) - and not Cristiano. Van Basten was very good, but I think when [Ronaldo](ronaldo.html) was, at his fittest, the best

[Fabio Capello on Ronaldo vs Messi] Can Ronaldo win more Ballons d’Or than Messi? It’s a very interesting battle. Messi is a bigger genius than Ronaldo, but he is having some problems at his club and that could cause some problems. Cristiano is very solid and mentally very strong. He wants to become the best ever

[Fabio Capello reveals how Real Madrid signed Roberto Carlos] I couldn’t believe it [stated Capello referring to the fact that the player was to be sold]. I had received some reports saying that he [Carlos] was annoyed with his manager at Inter, Roy Hodgson. Shortly after I arrived at Real, an agent called me to say that Inter were selling Roberto Carlos. I sent a fax, spoke with the president and the next day the deal was done. It could have been the quickest signing in history. My adventure at Madrid ended with a phone call from Berlusconi, who asked me to go back to Milan. I owed everything to him and couldn’t say ‘no’

[As Italy seek a permanent successor to Gian Piero Ventura - who paid the price for failing to guide the Azzurri through a World Cup qualifying play-off against Sweden in November - Capello rejected any notion of returning to the game as a manager] I have already said no [to talk of the Italy job]. I’ve already had some experience with the English and Russian national teams. I wanted to try to train a club once again and Jiangsu Suning was my last football experience. I did everything I wanted, I’m very happy with what I did, and now I am delighted to be a TV commentator. You always win in this role!

[Highly decorated football manager Fabio Capello is the latest to have weighed in on the debate that has seen people compare [Ronaldo](ronaldo.html) with Cristiano Ronaldo] He [Ronaldo] was more talented and if he took care of himself like the Portuguese does, his performances would have been even more incredible

[Fabio Capello points out the league has undeniably been presented with an unexpected opportunity to relaunch itself] TV rights and merchandising allowed England, Germany and Spain to overtake us, but with Cristiano Ronaldo we can try to lift our heads again

Certainly, Ronaldo alone is not enough. We need to have the strength and intelligence to exploit this Ronaldo stimulus to give a boost back to our football. But Ronaldo’s arrival means that people are speaking about the Italian league again

[Fabio Capello tells why he believes Lionel Messi is ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo] Ronaldo’s an extraordinary footballer, but Messi is a genius. There are three geniuses in football: Pele, Maradona and Messi. Period. Ronaldo is very strong as he lets you win everything, but Messi is a genius and something else

[Lionel Messi should not be compared unflatteringly to Diego Maradona because his Argentina team-mates are not up to the job] People talk about both, but Maradona’s Argentina were stronger and had more quality than Messi 9484afd5836d307b314a404d745a9a68. He’s had good players in front of him, but in midfield and behind he has missed a defence. That’s the important problem. Messi is extraordinary, he lives thinking about playing and not about business, like for example Neymar does.

[Former Juventus manager Fabio Capello believes the Serie A title race will be over for another season if the Bianconeri complete the signing of Matthijs de Ligt] If Juve sign De Ligt then it’s over. Again. And we go directly to the season after. De Ligt is the best defender out there. He allows you to defend with two, freeing up the full-backs, like he has at Ajax. With him, Juve will have hit the jackpot. Without him, well, it could help the others get closer. Let me be clear. When I talk about others, I’m referring exclusively to Napoli and Inter Milan. AC Milan, As Roma and Lazio won’t participate in the title race for obvious technical delays and financial problems.

[Napoli finished second in 2018-19, 11 points behind Juve, but Capello thinks it will be much tighter if they sign Roma defender Kostas Manolas, with whom they have been heavily linked with in recent weeks] I’ve read about Manolas to Napoli. With him and Kalidou Koulibaly, as well as a couple more quality reinforcements, Napoli become very competitive

[Fabio Capello sees Alexis Sanchez as difference-maker at Inter] Romelu Lukaku is a good player with good movement. He scored two goals, one was a penalty and the other an error from the goalkeeper. He is of use on the field, but is not world class

[Capello believes the ex-Udinese star is capable of shining back in Serie A] Sanchez has quality and in some areas of the field, he can make the difference, if he wants to. It’s a little like what Franck Ribery did for Fiorentina when he came off the bench against Napoli, he can use his pace

[Asked to pick out the sides that have caught his eye so far] The team that impressed me the most was Juventus in their first half against Napoli, but I was really let down by the Partenopei’s defence. All the other sides played well the first round and badly the second. I liked Lazio, they did quite well in both matches, having confirmed the foundations of last season’s squad

[After seeing Cristiano Ronaldo substituted for a second straight game, Fabio Capello has claimed the Juventus star hasn’t dribbled past anyone for three years] I didn’t like this, it wasn’t nice. He must be a champion even when he comes off the pitch. The truth is that Cristiano Ronaldo hasn’t dribbled [past] an opponent for three years. I did the La Liga commentary when he usually took the double step and left you there. Inside him is a super-champion, the best of all, but now there is Dybala and Douglas Costa, who made two sensational goals. Dybala in excellent condition can make the difference, as can Douglas Costa.

They win games without Ronaldo. Juve seemed dependent on him, instead the great squad and the quality of the players helps them win anyway. Bravo Sarri, who had the courage to take him off, it takes personality, especially thinking that all the players in the squad can play and make a difference. Cristiano did it for a while, but now it’s not him and he must recover - especially on a physical level. He does not have the speed and dynamism he has shown at other times

[Fabio Capello says Frank Lampard is a future England manager in the making] I don’t know. Probably […] because he can do it. He understands everything and has started without fear and put young players on the pitch

[Cristiano Ronaldo snubbed coach Maurizio Sarri as he walked straight down the tunnel to the dressing room and left the Allianz Stadium before the game had even finished] You must be a champion also when you are replaced, not only when things are going well. [Capello hammers Milan for treatment of Boban and Maldini] How Boban and Maldini are being treated makes me almost feel sick. As directors, they’ve showed the sincerity they had as players. I would’ve done what Boban did and not wear a jersey at all. Dignity comes before everything else

I’ve been asked to write a book many times. I’ve been offered considerable amounts. I don’t like reading certain things. For me, football’s played and not told

[Lautaro Martinez warned against becoming a Barcelona substitute by Capello] Lautaro Martinez is a very good player. He has everything - a lot of quality, very fast moves and also he’s very good when he shoots on goal. Going to Barcelona and becoming a starter with Luis Suarez there is difficult. I think it is better to be a starter at Inter than a substitute at Barcelona

It seems to me that, economically, in Spain the only team that will not be destroyed in this pandemic is Real Madrid. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are going to suffer a lot. The market will be revolutionised. Absurd numbers have been reached for the transfers. We will return to a more reasonable level. Smart managers will be necessary to fix the system. Egotism can be fatal

[Fabio Capello have been warning Lautaro against leaving Inter for Barca this summer] Lautaro Martinez is a very good player; he has everything. [Former Milan head coach Fabio Capello offered his opinion on Ibrahimovic’s return and believes he still has plenty to offer] Zlatan’s return to Milan is positive in two respects: for what he can still offer as a player and for the contribution of personality. The stories of the poor US championship are bleak. It is not at the level of the best European leagues. Ibrahimovic will need a few games to settle, but then he will become decisive. Milan have little personality. Zlatan will shake the team. However, the transfer window cannot end here. We need a reinforcement in defence

[Fabio Capello says Gareth Bale is a distracted plater who is no longer fully focused on football] Bale is a potentially fantastic player. My impression that football is no longer a priority in life. Bale seems to me a distracted player - I like him a lot, he’s strong and fast, perfect for modern football. If you want to be a champion today, though, you have to be 100 per cent attentive and focused only on your sporting life

[Capello also feels his former side have struggled to move on from the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus in 2018] Cristiano Ronaldo is fundamental for every team [he plays in]. Real Madrid suffered from his farewell and while [Karim] Benzema took his place, they lost a mental and technical leader

[How has De Ligt gone from ‘invincible’ at Ajax to benched at Juventus?] Juve have some problems in defence. They’re conceding too many goals in every game. Indeed, Sarri has put Demiral in there in place of De Ligt. He’s not fit? That’s what they’re saying […] But Bonucci needs a player like Demiral more than one like De Ligt

[And maybe a slightly longer one than most people expected] Michel Platini struggled for six months [at Juve] before becoming Platini

[Fabio Capello believes Christian Eriksen can succeed if deployed the right way by Conte] Italian football is not very fast but Eriksen has never been very fast in his career. I think he can do well as a director, like Andrea Pirlo at Juventus and not as a winger. He does not have the speed to be a box-to-box player. I think he can be a player like Brozovic and not a player like Vidal. He is not a man who does a lot dribbling

[Real have continued to invest heavily in top talent, such as Eden Hazard, while promising youngsters such as Rodrygo, Vinicius Junior and Martin Odegaard are considered to have bright futures] We’re waiting for them to explode. In my second spell at Madrid we signed Marcelo, [Fernando] Gago and [Gonzalo] Higuaín. In December the president came to me and said: ‘Why don’t you put them on, Fabio!’. ‘Because they are kids,’ I told him, ‘and you have to wait a while. They are the future, they can make history later.’ And the only one of them who did little was Gago, while the other two did their part. They needed experience and character. You have to sign young people and then use them little by little, taking care of them. You cannot give them the responsibility now

[Fabio Capello says he gave the England players a choice between Joe Hart or ‘Calamity’ David James when it came to replacing Rob Green in goal at the 2010 World Cup] You can’t say anything. Everyone makes mistakes. He made one, so I changed. I put in Calamity James. I had Green and I had Hart, just a kid. I asked the players. Hart or Calamity? ‘Calamity.’ I put Calamity in because of the players’ trust. John Terry and the defenders had more faith in James. Hart had played only once

Everyone saw it. Besides, because of the effect on the ball, when it hits the bar, the floor - the pitch was dry - and goes up like that, it can only have gone in: it’s physics. There had been a conference in Salt Lake City in February: an hour about the ball, 45 minutes about referees. The preparation was perfect, they said. This, that, the other. And I said to the referees’ chief: ‘Why not put someone behind the goal, a fifth official?’ ‘No, we’ve decided this way

Look! I said this would happen. We worked for two years and because of someone else’s mistake we’re going home. Because you didn’t put someone there. What’s he sitting in the stands for? Put him behind the goal. It was there! I told them that in February

[Former England, Real Madrid and AC Milan manager Fabio Capello has encouraged footballers to actively support their local communities] There has been a big debate in many countries about whether footballers should agree to take pay cuts at this time. I am not sure about pay cuts, as that involves the clubs, but I do believe that top professional footballers, who earn so much money today, should realise how lucky they are and give support to people in their local communities at this terrible time. This isn’t just about money; it’s about giving time, the benefit of their status and celebrity and being active members of society

[Capello, meanwhile, also pointed to specific ways players could help, using the examples of fellow Laureus Academy members Alessandro Del Piero and Ryan Giggs] Del Piero is raising funds for the Italian Red Cross and is planning to bring together the 2006 Italy World Cup winning team to play in a fundraiser. Ryan Giggs, the manager of Wales, has offered rooms in hotels he owns in Manchester for use by health workers. These are very good and imaginative examples of how football individuals and teams can do good and show that sport cares. It is the local communities which keep football teams alive and pay television subscriptions which have made the sport so profitable and the players so wealthy. What is so frustrating is that we cannot see this enemy. It is there, it is attacking us, but we can only fight back in an indirect way.

[How Ibrahimovic was transformed by Capello at Juventus] Zlatan came from Ajax and he was just playing for fun, scoring was an optional for him. With the potential he had, he had to look for the net more and stop performing like it was a circus. I had to make him understand this thing to make him that great player he is, because he still proves it at the age of 38. It’s all been down to him: I only gave him suggestions and he put into practice

[Capello admits that he has not always had so much success helping players attain the peaks that their potential] Antonio Cassano is my biggest regret. I couldn’t make him the great player he could have been. I worked so hard but I didn’t do it. I heard from him a few days ago. His wife has since put him in line. I asked him why he didn’t marry at 21!

[Bianconeri clearly have an unbalanced squad, and more and more fans are starting to question the recruitment strategy of Fabio Paritici, who has been handling Juve’s business since the departure of market guru Beppe Marotta to Inter] It’s awfully strange if Sarri as the coach of this Juventus squad complains he doesn’t have enough strength in depth. It’s not about how many players you have on the bench, but the quality at your disposal
