[Fernando Torres on Steven Gerrard] When people talk about the best footballers in Europe, they always single out Messi, and Ronaldo, but Gerrard is just as strong, Messi and Ronaldo are special talents and the fact that they are in teams winning the important trophies means they stand out from the rest. Maybe you need to win something to earn the big awards, I don’t know, but we all understand how good Gerrard is. I’m spoilt having a team-mate like Gerrard as I can count on him supplying me with perfect passes. You make the run into the space and however tightly marked he is, he finds a way to get the ball through in perfect condition. The highest compliment I can pay him is that he’s as creative as a Xavi at Barcelona, with something extra as well. When you add his energy, toughness, leadership and goal scoring ability and the result is a fantastic all-round player. Maybe I am biased because he is my team-mate and friend, but Stevie does not get the credit he deserves either in England or with European fans. This can change in 2010 when he has a chance to confirm his class with Liverpool and in the World Cup

[Fernando Torres on Steven Gerrard] He is without doubt the greatest player I have ever played with, he has everything. At Liverpool, he is irreplaceable. Every big club has a standard bearer, a home-grown talent, someone with a lifelong commitment to the cause. People come and go but he’s always there. It’s him and 10 others. He’s everything to the side. That’s Steven Gerrard at Liverpool. I can’t even begin to imagine the place without him.

[Fernando Torres on his departure to Chelsea from Liverpool] They wanted to bring in young players, to build something new. I was thinking to myself, this takes time to work. It takes two, three, four, maybe even ten years. I didn’t have that time. I was 27 years old. I did not have time to wait. I wanted to win. Here we are five years later and they are still trying to build – around the same position in the league as when I left. It was presented as if I was a traitor. It was not like this in the discussion(s). Liverpool could not admit they were doing something wrong with the whole team. They had to find a guilty one

[Fernando Torres tells about a memorable moment from his time playing for Rafael Benitez at Liverpool] I had just scored three goals, and everyone signed the ball. Everyone put ‘You’re the best’ or ‘congratulations’. Rafa Benitez put ‘Today, you lost the ball eight times’

[Fernando Torres announces that he will be leaving the club in the summer] When I joined Atletico, I was ten years old and it’s my house. I was lucky to debut, to play, to score goals … it’s always been my home. I can have many houses, but only one home. I’ve been part of an Atletico side that is always able to fight for titles and it’ll always be my home. It has been for my whole life. This is my last season at the club – it was not an easy decision, but under the circumstances, it’s maybe for the best. I want to continue playing somewhere else. I feel good

[Fernando Torres on winning the UEFA Europa League with Atletico Madrid] It’s difficult to explain how happy I feel after so much time, it was a dream I’ve always had since I was a child. I feel so proud to belong to this group, which has changed the lives of so many Atletico fans. Before we had to explain why we wore this shirt

[Fernando Torres bids farewell to the Atletico Madrid fans after his 404th and final appearance for the club] I’m very proud to have been part of this group. I give thanks to all the Atletico family. It has been a privilege to wear this jersey more than 400 times [and] it is very hard to know this is the end. You’ve made me the happiest person in the world. I’m going to ask one more thing of you: to sing our club anthem, the loveliest song in the world
