[Former France International Frank Leboeuf says Chelsea Are Over The Hill] I don’t agree that the game at Tottenham was the turning point for their season. It is hard for me to criticise my former club and I love them but I really feel they are at the end of the cycle. When I saw them flying at the top at the start of the season, I wondered if I knew anything about football any more but now we are seeing the truth and reality of that club and those players

They need to do something at the end of the season where they will need to sell and buy players. Of course, they didn’t have a bad game against Spurs but one or two years ago that match would have been won by Chelsea. I really feel Chelsea is not Chelsea any more. I am sad about that. We need a new Chelsea for next season

[And with a blockbuster showdown with Manchester United looming large on the horizon, the Frenchman hopes he is wrong in his assessment of the west London outfit] Of course, I hope I will be wrong. The vertical column of John Terry, Michael Essien, [Frank] Lampard and [Didier] Drogba are back and that’s important but it will be a tough game against United. They have to win and then at least draw against Arsenal if they want to keep surviving in the competition. The positive thing I can say about Chelsea is that they haven’t had any luck

[Quotes on Marcel Desailly] He’s got that aura of ‘I’m solid, I know that I’m solid, but I don’t need to be high-tempered because I know everyone else is scared of me.’ He’s calm; he’s the Godfather

[Chelsea told to ditch Italian job if Sarri is moved on after one season] I think it’s been a difficult season for him, I think for some players as well we are at the end of a cycle so maybe some players need to go to be replaced with others who can prove that they deserve to go to Chelsea Football Club. And I think that when you take a decision, you have to make sure that you will stick to that one and give another chance, another season for the coach that you decided to buy. He wasn’t very efficient for the first year, but what he did with Naples was quite amazing so he may be able to do it with a second year if you think he will be able to.”

[He added on a club that has had the likes of Gianluca Vialli, Claudio Ranieri, Carlo Ancelotti, Roberto Di Matteo and Antonio Conte at the helm in recent times] One thing I want to do and I want to say to Chelsea Football Club is what is that tradition of getting Italian coaches all the time?

And I’m not trying to [say] ‘please take a French one’, but maybe they have some coach in England who understands better the culture of English football and maybe others like Germans, like we see with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. I don’t know what is the tradition of getting an Italian coach at Chelsea all the time. But lately it hasn’t been a very good idea, so maybe after Sarri will be the time to change it, get another nationality to see another football, another type of experience and another spirit maybe on the field.

[Former Chelsea star suggests Mourinho is finished] I was very fond of him when he came to Chelsea the first time after what he had done with Porto But I think he lost something, I remember all the players would say ‘we love him’. I remember at Inter [Marco] Materazzi crying and everything. I think he has lost that, to the point where even the players who played at Manchester begun to hate him. I think he has to think about his life and if he wants to go back to a big club, maybe PSG, but he has to change stuff.

[Leboeuf backs second season for Sarri, Blues boss] I am always the kind of guy who likes to give a second chance, because it was the case everywhere in England with all clubs that I saw. Even if they had a bad season they kept their coach because they tried to work on their abilities. Now it seems that after a year, if it is not good it 9484afd5836d307b314a404d745a9a68, ‘Goodbye’. But at the end of the day, if Chelsea win the Europa League and qualify for the Champions League then he deserves another chance.

I didn’t agree with everything he decided, like changing N’Golo Kante for example from a holding midfield player to a midfielder on the side. But if you decide to get a guy because you believe he can bring something to your club, he should have more than a year to get the results. If he finishes well he should have another chance

[Leboeuf says I have no respect for Luis Suarez, Barcelona’s loss pleased me because of him] I like Barcelona a lot, but I was delighted that they weren’t in the final because of Luis Suarez. I don’t have any kind of respect for a player like him.

Yes, he’s a great player and he’s having a great career, but he’s a shyster, a complainer, a guy who I don’t have any respect for. I can’t stand a player like that on the football pitch, he’s a bad example for young people. What he did with the handball against Ghana at the World Cup, he was very happy, the two times he’s bitten rivals. If he played against me, they’d send me off, it surprises me that his rivals have cold blood against him, I’d do anything to make sure he didn’t finish the game either

[Frank Leboeuf fears a top-four finish may prove beyond those at Stamford Bridge following two windows of no incoming transfers] They’re not going to give up, they’re going to try and catch [Chelsea]. I’m happy with what Frank does, the work he has done so far and how the team plays. I’m happy with [Antonio] Rudiger coming back and scoring two goals [in a 2-2 draw at Leicester], because he’s going to help defensively too. But it’s possible that either Tottenham or Wolves or Man United come back to the race and overtake Chelsea at the end of the season. I don’t think we should be expecting anything from Chelsea this season because they didn’t recruit this summer, or during the winter market. It’s hard for Frank Lampard, it’s hard for the club, but it’s nice to see them fighting and still a force after a hard summer. I’m confident they can still do it. It’s going to be hard, but I’m sure Chelsea can cope with the situation

[Leboeuf says Van Dijk more complete than Vidic] I would go for Van Dijk. I think he’s more complete. I loved Vidic, because I think he was a dog, and a fantastic defender. But Van Dijk can lead the team and has this great range of passing. I don’t think Vidic was capable of doing that. Hats off to him, though, he was a fantastic defender

[Chelsea warned off Coutinho raid as Leboeuf questions where Barcelona flop would fit in] I don’t think so. Coutinho has been good with Liverpool, so far poor with Barcelona and Bayern Munich. I would have lots of question marks seeing him coming to Chelsea, to bring what? We have young players, very talented, who are very promising. We have good midfield players with [Mateo] Kovacic and Jorginho, to organise the game. I don’t know where his place would be. If I was the chairman, if I was the coach, I would be very hesitant to pick him up.

[Chelsea told £80m for Coutinho is ‘too much’ as Leboeuf questions quality of Barcelona flop] Well, to be really honest, and frank, no [Chelsea should not sign him]. I think Coutinho is a good player and I’m not even trying to be harsh on him, I think I want to find Barcelona guilty for the situation because they put a price on Coutinho who I think doesn’t belong to that league.

Now it’s hard to reverse the system, it’s hard to think that you can even the price and accept to lose like £65m for a transfer. But if you check on the quality of Coutinho, of course he is a talented player, of course he is a good player, but does he belong to the top, top players? Allow me to have some doubts about that.

When I see Neymar, when I see [Cristiano] Ronaldo, when I see [Lionel] Messi, when I see [Kylian] Mbappe, I see top, top players. Coutinho has a price of a top, top player and I don’t want to make a statement but I’m not sure he has the quality of a top, top player

And now, how do you reverse the system? How do you put Coutinho in a team and how do you rate him now? You talk about Chelsea, ready to [pay] £80m. I think it’s too much for a player where you’re not sure he’s going to find the level he was, he used to be, at Liverpool and is not anymore. That’s why I think Coutinho shouldn’t go to Chelsea because there is no room for him and I think it is too much to spend for a player where we don’t know the standard

[Leboeuf says Paul Pogba lacks consistency] There is a frustration and it’s understandable when you have seen his performances. He started pretty well, he showed that he could be a leader but I think there is a lack of consistency in his game. No doubt that he is a fantastic player, he’s shown it at Juventus and at the beginning when he joined Manchester United.

Since then there seems to be so many problems around him, around the club, or around his team-mates that in fact, we don’t see the Pogba we want to see with all the qualities that he has. Maybe he’s a leader in the dressing room but he doesn’t show that he can be a technical leader like Bruno Fernandes immediately showed to the crowd when he signed for Manchester United

Good players can always play together, so definitely, they can - it’s a big yes. I think it’s exciting… we do have an exciting squad. I’ve got Scott (McTominay), Fred, Nemanja (Matic). There are many games coming up and I’m sure we can find a good connection between them. We’ve been discussing that as a coaching team of course, and we’re looking forward to it.

Of course Bruno coming in, making the impact he made, it was a boost for everyone, the club, supporters and players. Getting Paul and Marcus Rashford back would be fantastic.

Paul has had a difficult season with injuries, and Marcus as well is getting back. So for us, and for them too, this gives them a chance to start on a par or even ahead of other players.
