[Harry Maguire on his journey from England’s third tier to being a regular in the Three Lions line-up] To play in League One in every game when I was 18 was massive for my development. It’s something I’m very proud of. I have great memories and it was a great experience. If it didn’t happen for me back then, I probably wouldn’t be where I am now

[He is currently away with England on Nations League Finals duty and has said of the speculation surrounding his future] At the moment, nothing’s going through my head in terms of club football. I’m fully focused on the games coming up

[Paul Pogba: Manchester United vows to take action after star targeted by racist abuse on social media] Disgusting. Social media need to do something about it… Every account that is opened should be verified by a passport/driving licence. Stop these pathetic trolls making numerous accounts to abuse people @Twitter @Instagram

[England’s players were subjected to racist abuse during Monday night’s 6-0 Euro 2020 qualifying win over Bulgaria in Sofia] The best way to bounce back. Proud of the team. There’s no place in football for that - disgraceful behaviour. Something must be done

[Maguire says he want Sheffield United to win every game - apart from against Man United] It means so much, the club that gave me the chance of fulfilling my dream of becoming a professional footballer. I owe them a lot, I go back and support them whenever I can. It’s the first result I look for when I get off the pitch. I want to see them win every game they play, apart from when we’re playing against them. A fantastic club and it’s great to see them back in the Premier League where they belong

[Maguire acknowledged he is unlikely to get much in the way of support from friends as he visits his old club] It’s nice to go home and see my friends and family. I probably won’t get to see them much this weekend, not before the game anyway, probably after the game – and hopefully I’ll be the one smiling with my friends and not them!

I’m sure some of [my friends] will be supporting Sheffield United, but my family will be supporting Man Utd and hoping we get the three points

[The Norwegian boss remains in the hunt for a European spot after a pressure-filled start to the season and Maguire has thrown his full support behind a man under the microscope] He’s been there and done it, scored the big goals and won the big trophies, so we need to try and follow in his footsteps. It’s great to play under him. He’s been great since I’ve come in and it’s an exciting time for us players to work under someone like Ole

[Harry Maguire admits challenging for top-four finishes is not enough for Manchester United] You can see from the start of the season that we look a lot more like a team. You can see where we want to be and where we want to head. I knew when I first came to Manchester United that Ole had said loads that it’s a building process but we will get to where we want to be. I can see where we are heading and the style that he wants to implement on the team. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of aspects that we still need to improve to get to the top, where we want to be. We don’t like challenging for the Champions League spots, we want to be challenging for titles. We know there is still a lot of improvement to be made, but we feel like we’re on the right track and I’m sure eventually we’ll get there

Playing for Manchester United, every game is so big. I knew before coming to the club having spoken to ex-players – I spoke to Jonny Evans a lot, who recommended an unbelievable club – it’s more than a club. You have seen the way they have acted during this crisis, how classy they have been, it’s more than a football club, it’s something that works well in the community.

It’s been a great run of form for clean sheets. Sometimes you can play in games and play better when you concede one or two goals but [some games] you manage to keep a clean sheet, David [de Gea] makes one or two saves and everyone is praising the defence. One thing we have shored up on at the moment is set-plays. You look back at our record before this run of clean sheets, defending set-plays we were up there with one of the worst in the league. If you do that and aren’t scoring from them at the other end, you aren’t going to stand a chance in getting where you want to go because they are such a big part of the game. It’s just gelled together more. It’s a new back four. We have got a settled back four

[Harry Maguire has expressed his belief that Manchester United will need to be mentally strong to return to the top] As a Red, our toughest opponent, probably, is ourselves. I would say that, at times this year, as a team, we have probably let ourselves down by being a bit too inconsistent. Not just for a full game but during games. There have been times when we’ve been so good in games and then we’ve come off it a bit and been punished. So I’d say our toughest opponent is ourselves. We need to be mentally strong. We are a young group but we don’t really want to use that as an excuse. We want to be young but play mature. That is where we have really picked up in recent weeks

I have joined this club because I want to win trophies and I want to get silverware. When I look back on my time at Manchester United, I want to make sure I have some trophies in that cabinet.

[Harry Maguire has said Manchester United team-mate Marcus Rashford is the most talented player he has ever played alongside] I’ve always spoke so highly of Marcus when I was with him at England. I can’t speak highly enough of him. I think he’s going to go on to have an exceptional career. I think as a club, you should have a captain and rely on him but you need to spread the onus of the leadership in the group. Marcus is there and he battles through every game, obviously he’s missing through a bad injury at the moment but he’s battling hard to get back and he’s very rarely missing games. He’s always wanting to make himself available. I think you can see around the place and on and off the field as well, he’s excellent with his charity work, which is great to see. On the pitch, like I said, he’s amazed me. He’s the most talented player I’ve ever played with and I’m sure he’s going to be a wonderful player for this club

[Manchester United team-mate Harry Maguire says De Gea is the best Premier League keeper of the last 10 years] Having played under him I’ve realised how good of a keeper he is. I’ve watched him over the years in the Premier League and for me he’s been the best Premier League keeper in the last 10 years or so. To play under him this year, it’s been great to see how he goes about his business in training each day, he’s an excellent trainer

[He added on Rashford] I’ve always spoken so highly of Marcus when I was with him at England. I can’t speak highly enough of him. I think he’s going to go on to have an exceptional career. I think he’s going to go on to – I don’t want to put too much pressure on him – be a wonderful player for Manchester United, as he is now

[Maguire impressed with Man Utd’s training return] It’s been a strange few months, but it has been a protocol which the club has followed. It seems such a safe environment. It’s our first day back today, but it seems so safe and everyone is respecting it so well, so long may that continue and I’m sure no one will have any problems. There is a lot less people at the training ground when we go in. Today [Wednesday] I was in a group of four, working with one coach, so not many people. You’ve got a lot space, big areas, not going really close to anyone, but the main thing is getting the work in and it was a tough session, [then] go home and now I’m relaxed and it’s all in the bank and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.

The safety, it seems really well organised. We all got tested before we came in, so everyone in the changing room has a negative test. Every morning we get our temperature taken before we get to the training ground, so obviously they’re checking the temperature. We all have an app where we fill in to see if we’ve had any symptoms throughout the day. It’s such a safe environment and it’s an environment which is there to be built on. At the moment we’re all just taking it phase by phase, step by step, and that’s the only thing we can do at the moment. I think it’s just taking it day by day. Like I said, the main thing is getting the physical work into our legs and it helps you mentally as well: being at the training ground and seeing familiar faces

Well, first and foremost, it’s the first step. I think at this moment in time we’ve just got to take it step by step. We’re in phase one, let’s get through this phase without any troubles. I’m sure with the way things are set up and organised that should be done and then hopefully we can move into phase two and go from there. It’s step by step, it’s day by day. It’s only the first day, but it’s been a good start for me. To see the organisation has been really pleasing

[Maguire sends Man Utd team-mates warning ahead of crucial Sheffield United fixture] It was a crazy game. We were really poor in the first half. No doubt about it, it was one of our poorest first halves of the season. We managed to find ourselves two goals down but then got in a great position and looked like we were going to win. They didn’t really create any chances in the last 20 or 30 minutes of the game and then, obviously with the last kick, they found space and it was a good finish from Oli McBurnie. In the end, it was a tough result to take but I don’t think we deserved any more on the day than a point. We weren’t good enough and know we have to perform better in this game

It’s disappointing not to play in front of your fans but, one day, they’ll be back. And, when they’re back, I am sure the atmosphere is going to be even better and louder than it normally is at Old Trafford – if you can beat that. We’re going to miss the fans. Home and away, they follow in great numbers and the support is incredible. But we know they’re going to be in front of their TV screens, watching us, shouting us along, and the main thing is we want to put smiles back on their faces.

Maybe it does take away the home fans making the atmosphere uncomfortable for the away team, but it’s still about the 11 players who turn up on the day. There is enough talent in our squad to go and beat anyone. We’re fully focused on ourselves and are not looking at it being home or away. We’re just seeing every game as a chance to try to get the three points and perform at our best

[Harry Maguire hopes he is not the only one playing for the badge at Manchester United] One thing for sure is, every time you put a kit on with the Manchester United badge on it, you don’t need much spurring on. You know how big the club is, the history it has got, and it’s such a big, iconic club. If you can’t get motivated to win a game of football for this club then you’re in the wrong sport, to be honest

[Maguire on Sheffield United] It’s a fantastic football club and one I’m really proud of because of how well they’re doing at the moment. I am really thankful for the opportunity they gave me to start my professional career, and the faith and trust they showed in me at a young age. I’m really happy with how they’re doing and theirs is the first result I look for after a game with United. Hopefully, they can finish one place below us!

[Harry Maguire has got his sights set on becoming the first outfield player to complete every minute of a Premier League campaign for Manchester United since the 1994-95 season] Yes, it’s going to be hard work with games coming every three days or so. But, no, I’m in a great position – physically and, mentally, I’m fresh and ready to go. I hope, with every player coming back, we don’t want anyone to pick up any injuries due to the amount of games we have coming up. Fingers crossed for all players out there – we don’t want anybody picking up injuries so there are fully fit squads and everyone going full throttle at it, playing football. It’s what we love to do. I’ve seen, on Sky, the fixtures and how many games are being shown every day really, so it’s going to be a great time for the fans to sit back and watch. They will be disappointed they can’t go to stadiums to support the lads, but it’s the best we can do at the minute. I am sure it will still be a great time for fans and, hopefully, for the players as well

[FA Cup win would mean everything] It would mean everything. I joined this club to win trophies, it’s a great tournament and hopefully we play a lot better in the semi-final than tonight. It was a difficult game and we made hard work of it. We weren’t at our best, but that’s what happens in cup games sometimes. We had a tough game in the heat on Wednesday but we made changes so that shouldn’t be the reason. I can’t really put a finger on it at the moment, we’ll have to watch it back and see. We played a little slow and went through the middle a bit too much, we should have gone wide a lot more. We’re in the semi-final and that’s all that matters

[Maguire is also hoping that his match-winning cameo in front of goal pushes him to score more often in United colours] I’m always pleased when I chip in, especially when it’s a big result in the last minute of extra time. I’m a bit disappointed that I’ve only scored three goals, it’s something I’m working on and looking to improve between now and the end of the season and hopefully I can carry that into next season

[Harry Maguire rued his side’s late lapse in concentration] We’re disappointed as we had control of the game and had numerous chances to kill it off. We weren’t at our best. There are areas that we need to improve on, but we did enough to win the game. A set play has killed us in the end. The second half was a bit of a slog and we weren’t good enough on the ball. We brought pressure onto ourselves and we didn’t get the third to kill it off. Going down to 10 men was unfortunate but hopefully Brandon is OK. We’ve been really good on set plays during this run, but they’ve managed to get a flick on at the near post. We’ll have to look back at it to see what went wrong. We’re disappointed at the moment but we’ll dust ourselves down and try to pick up another three points
