[Jose Mourinho on himself] If people say I am an arrogant football manager, maybe they are not so wrong. But if some family or some friends say I am arrogant, then I am upset. If you are successful in any job, I believe it is because you are in love with that job, and if you have a successful family it is because people are in love with each other. I’m romantic in the sense that the people I love, they have to know that I love them, and they do know it, and they feel it. My wife did a tattoo and challenged me to do it. I didn’t at first because I always felt, ‘Urrrgh, it hurts’ and ‘I don’t have to do this to my skin’, and so on and so on. But it was her birthday and I thought it would be a good gift to her. [Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho talks about United midfielder Paul Pogba qualities] He can play in so many positions. The problem is not the position. The problem is not the tactical system. The problem is, in my opinion, somebody that comes from a different style of football and needs this time to be at his best level in football that is really difficult to play, especially for midfield players. I think it is really difficult to play or adapt from different realities, but he is a phenomenal player. He has unbelievable potential. He has years and years to develop his game, so that expectation and investment from the club is based on that – a super player for the next seven or eight years.
We don’t expect Paul to arrive here and the next day to be unbelievable, but the other thing is that we trust him so much that we pass to him this kind of feeling. He is a very self-confident boy too, so we are living well with the critics, if you want, and we know what the critics are. With the quality of his pass, with his aerial game, with his agility in such a big body, for his defensive side of the game, coming from the back with the ball, he would be a phenomenal central defender, too.

[Jose Mourinho on Manchester United attacking dynamism] We need to score more goals. I think being dynamic, happiness and routines adapted to the qualities of the players is one thing but, in the end, the most important thing is [putting] the ball in the net, goals, points and victories
But that [being dynamic] is a good thing and a thing that I praise. That’s something that the team needs and one of the reasons why, for example, in the last match [against Arsenal] we pressed high. That puts them now in of course a good position for the Champions League fight. [The Portuguese express his disappointment in the performance of the reigning Bundesliga champions, who have been knocked out at this stage for the first time in nearly a decade] My analysis was based on Bayern tradition and Bayern I think for nine consecutive years they go to the quarter-final – so I think it’s the first time in nine years that they don’t go. Bayern was just sad to see. I think they buckled at every possible perspective. Liverpool was the team that brought the line up, Bayern was the team that kept the line back, big distance between the lines.
Lewandowski too lonely. No pressure in the midfield. James Rodriguez absolutely lost, incapable of making any kind of pressing, any kind of game in between the lines or connection with the three attacking players. So I think really a sad performance from Bayern

I don’t want to make big changes. I want to respect the base and the base is the work they [Pochettino and his staff] did for five years. The base is what they did before. This is not about me. I am not here to make drastic changes.

[Mauricio Pochettino’s assistant shares heartbreaking picture of his goodbye message to Tottenham players] I’ve been smiling for two days. I have to share with you what we already shared indoors which is that this club will always be his home, this training ground will always be his training ground. He can come when he wants, when he misses the players, when he misses the players that he worked with. The door is always open for him
From my experience, tomorrow is another day. He will find happiness again. He will find a great club again, and he will have a great future. He gave everything, every day at the club and he will leave with a sad feeling, but a feeling that he did great work. So I would just like to say that because it it is what everyone at the club feels about it also. He will always be welcome here

[José Mourinho apologises to Eric Dier for first-half substitution] The most difficult moment of the game for me was not when Olympiakos scored the first or second goal but when I made the change in the first-half. Hurt the player but hurt myself. It’s important the player understands and I was lucky that my choice was a very intelligent boy who has a good understanding of what the team is. It was not about his performance
We were losing 2-0 in a very difficult moment and one positional midfield player was more than enough. I apologise to Eric, in spite of the fact he knows I did it for the team and not with the intention to hurt him
[Spurs took control of the game with Kane’s equaliser for 2-2 - after the quick-thinking of a ballboy. He returned the ball swiftly for a throw–n to allow the team to break upfield] To do that you have to be a very good ballboy. I was a very good ballboy between 10 and 15 or 16 years old. Kane leaving a match the way he did it, he didn’t think twice, it took him two seconds to realise the severity of his situation. I think it’s too soon. I think one thing is potential and another thing is conditions to express potential and I think he needs time. Having minutes, being involved is one thing. Another thing is what you call the direct replacement. To be that he needs to work. The next step for him is to sign a new contract at the club long-term and then it is for everyone to decide what is the best for his development. In this club we care about our players. It is also to find the best pathway to develop. He’s 17 years old. I don’t think at the age of 17 it’s good for you to go on loan to a Championship club or to go abroad to another country. My feeling is it’s one thing when you are 20 if you need that step, another thing is when you are 17. When you are 17 you are a baby. Seventeen you just have to be in your father club where you feel at home, where you are at home, where you train and develop with the first team

The situation couldn’t be worse. That is obvious. There is nothing we can do. We are going to play with the players we have available. I was worried about not having attacking options on the bench, now I don’t have attacking options on the pitch! No strikers, no market. Nothing. The only help we can have is our crowd. The Tottenham supporters, that is the only thing that I ask because to the players I cannot ask more than what they are giving
[Mourinho added on Tottenham’s bid to qualify for the Champions League for a fifth successive season] I like analogies. When we arrived, we were -12 [from fourth]. [Mourinho insists Parrott still not ready as Spurs boss defends makeshift striker Alli] The match was close and will always be close. If you look at it in that perspective then yes, we missed a big chance to score a beautiful goal and to make the score 3-1. That’s football though, and nobody’s to blame. Ben arrived in a great position, the cross is great and Dele makes the run that he has to make. He’s pretty good in the air for a player who is not a striker. He’s a good header of the ball. He was unlucky. Obviously without the strikers we tried different solutions. I think it worked in the sense that we managed to score goals. We managed to have some opportunities. We managed to arrive in dangerous positions. I believe we had more possession than them. We had more control than them
He is not ready, he is not ready. He’s a good kid, a good talent, he’s a kid we want to help. He’s a kid who needs help, not just on the pitch but outside the pitch. He’s a kid we are going to take care of like we have since the beginning and he’s a kid who is obviously going to have a real opportunity in the right moment when we feel it is the moment.
Why was he on the bench? He was on the bench because Erik Lamela told me before the game he was not even ready to go on the bench. So, in that moment, without Lamela, we brought Troy in and in the last five minutes we put on a striker who at least knows the position so he could try to fix Conor Coady, giving Dele some more space and freedom. That is the way it is. We have to try to keep close [to the top four] until the moment we have our power back.

We are taking good care of him. Yesterday we decided it was good for him to play [for the U23s] but only for 45 minutes. The objective was to get some football. He has qualities, he has potential. He’s not an end product and he has a lot to develop at every level. He’s going to be on the bench tomorrow again. He has two Premier League appearances, something that’s not normal for 18-year-olds. He’s a privileged one. He has the privilege of that and training with the first team and the very good people in the academy. Step by step

The problem is not his experience. Eric [Lamela] also missed one. The problem is the 30 minutes. [Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho feels Eric Dier ‘has to play’ against Burnley on Saturday, insisting the incident which saw him run into the stands was ‘almost nothing’] What happened was clear, almost nothing happened. He is ready and I think he has to play
It was exactly my feeling and my reaction. I’m much older than Eric and have more years in football and I was born a footballer’s son and grew up as a footballer’s manager. If I saw something happening with my son I’d do the same. I wouldn’t think two seconds about doing the same.
As professionals, sometimes we have to go through difficult situations. And we have to try to cope with it, be a little bit lucky that it will not happen the same way as it happened with Eric. But I think everybody understands what happened. Everybody has an opinion. I’m happy that the football family understands what happened. Let’s move on.
About Eric being in the right frame of mind to play, of course. The only thing that matters is: first of all, that nothing really big happened. And secondly he played so, so well in the last two matches that of course he is going to play.

[Mourinho not expecting Spurs to punish Dier after fan altercation] [When I arrived, in Dier] I found a player that was not playing. I found a sad player, without confidence. Then I was trying to give him that confidence back. I played him immediately, and in a position I thought was his natural position (central midfield)
[But] we needed a little bit more creation and dynamic in midfield, because we wanted to give the team an offensive character. And then, when we lost the attacking players, I thought more when you don’t have the goalscorers you need more players that have a little bit more creation, so we went a bit more in the direction of players like [Giovani] Lo Celso, even playing in a double pivot
Then I spoke with him (Dier) a few times. He was always giving me the idea that his best feeling would be playing as a centre-back, and my answer at that time was I think this is something to maybe start him in next pre-season
By different circumstances, I decided to play him against Wolves in a back-three, where I thought he would be less exposed and, with the ball, a midfield player. He played so, so well. Then I decided ‘okay, the feeling is so good, let’s go with a back-four when it is more difficult for a centre-back’. He did so, so good again. So now we have the feeling that maybe it’s his best position
And again, more important than what I or my assistants feels, or data says, is what the player feels. And he loves to play there. You can see his attitude on the pitch; leadership, confidence. So maybe there is a good solution for him. And in a world where there are not so many centre-backs, in this moment, at a high level, he is a good solution for us

There are different perspectives of players when they are coming to the end of their careers. There are the players that just want to be there for a couple more years on their contract - a few more million before they leave - and there are other guys with a different perspective which is: let me try to reach a high moment in my career, let me try and do something I never did. The ones that were regular in the team, they were fantastic, but the ones that were not regular, the ones that didn’t play as much, they were always there for the team, always there for the younger guys, always there for the coach, always there to help. Especially after the defeat against Bergamo. I was very violent with the players – I told them they had won the Scudetto of sh*t. It was only afterwards that I understood I had hurt them and I apologised
I was at my best when I felt at home, where I could feel the emotions of the group, where I was 200 per cent invested with my heart. That’s why, on May 22 in Madrid, I was content to experience the happiness of others, all the way from [president Massimo] Moratti to the people working in the warehouse. I had already won a Champions League title – I used to always think of myself first and then others. At Inter, it was never like that. In a family, when you become a father, you understand that someone is more important than you and that you move into second place. Ten years later, we are all together again. Just the other day I spoke to Alessio, my driver from my time at Inter. Where and when does it happen that a coach who leaves, ten years later still talks to the driver? Never. That’s Inter for me. These are my people

[Mourinho provides Kane and Son fitness update ahead of anticipated Premier League restart] I cannot say in this moment they are ready to play because one thing is to recover from an injury, and another is to be ready to play football. In Harry’s case, I think for about five months he hasn’t played, but all of them are not injured any more. They are training, and training is what it is at the moment. Training has a lot of limitations. We cannot compete, we cannot do one versus one, we have to keep a certain distance, we cannot compete. Harry Kane, Son, Bergwijn, Sissoko, all of them are fine. I think with a couple of weeks of normal training, when the authorities tell us we can train normally I think in a couple of weeks, the boys will be ready to play, of course not in the maximum of their potential, I think nobody can do that in this moment. For us, of course, it is a great feeling, because we finished the period with that defeat at Leipzig, where we were really, really in trouble to have 11 players, including attacking players, and in this moment Lamela, Son, Dele, Harry Kane, Bergwijn, everybody is fit now.

[Mourinho warns Tottenham will be frugal this summer] The first question after that is when will the transfer window be? I don’t think it will be in July or August anymore, it has to go further than that. It is normal you are going to have a different market, I don’t see the world – especially the football world – ready for some crazy numbers we used to have. I would like my club to be what I know what we will be: sensible, balanced and not going to spend rivers of money. We are trying to respect the situation, not just the football but the situation in the world and society overall
To be honest in this moment it is the last thing we are thinking. In the club we are not thinking about it. No talks about it, because in this moment we think about safety, following every rule inside of the training ground, we are trying to be perfect, not just in the testing but in everything in the club, we are trying to be perfect. Since the moment Bundesliga started, the Portuguese league and Spanish league announced a date to start, I think it is the most difficult moment for us, because we want to play. It is hard to see other countries playing football and we don’t do it.

[Spurs manager Jose Mourinho has insisted he will not rush the teenager into his plans, saying in March that Parrott requires plenty more development before he’s ready for extensive playing time] We cannot tell you every single detail. We are taking care of a player and a young boy. He’s 18 but one month ago he was 17. Step by step.

[Spurs manager Mourinho says it is right for Premier League to return for the fans’ sake] We shouldn’t be selfish, we shouldn’t demand too much. It’s our time to give. For example, when players play Euros and World Cups, they barely have a holiday, they don’t have pre-season, they come direct from holiday and sometimes they train less than a week to play the first Premier League match. At this moment, people are worried about trying to have what they never have. For example, speaking about pre-season injuries, there are pre-season injuries. Everyone has pre-season injuries in normal seasons, so we cannot expect now not to have an injury here, an injury there. We cannot ask for more than the authorities are giving us, which is the maximum security, and I think now it’s time just to play and to give people what people want.
There was a moment we were all scared about when we would start. Is the season is over?. Next season will start September, October, November […] who knows? But then less doubts, less doubts, less doubts and now it feels like it’s coming. We want to play. You look to other countries, Germany, they have already played matches, Portugal starts this weekend, Spain next weekend, football is coming everywhere. We used to be the football that never stops, even in periods like Christmas – we are the league for the world and it feels a bit strange that we’re not playing but we are waiting patiently for the green light to go

It is unnecessary because the player understands the naivety of the situation, the player is a good guy, the player even in the dressing room has a big Asian friend that he loves. He learned the lesson immediately with the embarrassment. I don’t feel we need more than that

We didn’t want any players to be into the limits of fatigue and of course nobody played the four periods […] What we work on tactically we do in the training ground but the match was much more about competing, getting minutes, intensity and it’s very important to do it and to have this last week without any injuries. We all know that in these first matches, and in the friendlies, there’s also the risk of getting some injuries

[Mourinho won’t take risks with Spurs’ fitness ahead of ‘fight’ for points with Man Utd] We are not going to have any more friendlies. We think it would be good, but it’s too risky. We are going to do a normal preparation week, starting on the Monday and going through to Friday. After that, we’ve two more days and then West Ham, so the next 10 days are going to be busy. We have to adapt to this new reality, which is what we’ve tried to do. We have to think that the points are there to fight for. With fans or without fans, the points are there on the pitch. Ourselves and United will have to fight for them
We needed minutes, we needed to know the feeling of playing here without our supporters and to have this training session with another Premier League team is the best thing

[Mourinho confirms Kane to start against Man Utd] We have little things (injuries) but we are going to wait until tomorrow [before ruling them in or out]. Of course [Japhet] Tanganga has a stress fracture for a few months now and of course he didn’t recover during this period, and we have some little problems that we have to analyse before we make a decision. But the ones that had the surgeries, Kane, Son and Sissoko, these three they recovered and they are ready to play. Kane hasn’t played football for more than six months, so again he is working extremely well. I can tell you no problem he is going to start the game. Does harry have 90, 80, 70, 60 minutes in him? Only the game will tell us that. Is Harry on his top form? For him, I don’t know. It’s been around six months without a football match, but he works extremely well. He is an amazing professional and he’s going to start tomorrow.
I consider Gio one of the victims of the rules and one of the victims of the protocols, because he was injured in the end of the period before coronavirus. He was in very bad condition in the last three or four matches. He played for five or 10 minutes against Burnley, he wasn’t ready for Leipzig. Because of the rules, his injury isn’t one in need of surgery, it needed daily treatment and close contacts with physios and fitness coaches, but that was not possible for about two months, he was injured and he couldn’t recover from it. So, when the training ground opened and he started treatment. It was not enough to have him 100 per cent fit - only in the past days was he training with the team. Available for tomorrow? Yes, I think so, but we will test if he is going to play 90 minutes, start the game or not. It was a difficult process for him.

[Spurs boss Mourinho unhappy with Alli suspension for coronavirus video] I feel very, very sorry that Dele is not playing. He is a player that works so, so hard during all this period and he’s really frustrated that he cannot play the first match. [Asked how Tottenham would shape up without Alli] How are we going to play? I’m not going to tell you. Kane hasn’t played football for more than six months, so again he is working extremely well. [Tottenham manager Mourinho congratulates Rashford for free school meals campaign] He did amazingly well, I congratulate him on that. It’s a bit strange for me that one football player can make it happen and, if it happens, it’s because the government realises it is the right thing to do. The government shouldn’t wait for one player to come out publicly and put some pressure on them for that to happen. The 18-year-old kid I met a few years ago is now a man, and a man with principles. To fight for kids very similar to him when he was a young kid is something very nice from Marcus
[…] The battle for the top four would be amazing if we all started with the same number of points but unfortunately that’s not the. It’s a strange battle to fight but it’s a street challenge, motivation. I will try not to look to that difference, I honestly cannot tell you the difference in points, we have to look at this incredible challenge in the way we have to do it. Every game we have to try and win. At the end of the nine matches, we will see what we did and our opponents did. Normally in this fight we don’t depend as much as we do on our exact opponents, but let’s focus on one match at a time and tomorrow is Manchester United and the points are there to fight for.

[Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has hit out at the officiating of his side’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United in the Premier League] It was hard to manage the game. I am not happy with the penalty and not happy with the second penalty. I am unhappy with the VAR, not the referee on the first, the referee can make a mistake but VAR is there to do the job. Paul Pogba did his job. That is it. I think Jonathan Moss was also trying to do his job the best he could. I think the VAR is a different situation. In the second I am unhappy with Jon Moss because he did not give the free kick leading up to it and then gave a penalty. In this case, the VAR gave the truth

[Mourinho says Spurs lack substitute options compared to Man Utd] Happy with things and unhappy with others. What did I like? I liked the team attitude, organisation, control, being solid. Giving to United what they don’t like. Unhappy with the fact that the way I was reading the game I had no bench to react to it. When they became more dominant we were tired up front and could not press
The players did fantastic work defensively - they had two dangerous shots that Hugo Lloris saved and nothing else. Everything else was under control. For 70 minutes, when we had the energy, we were strong with the ball and we knew what we wanted to do. I have to admit for the last 15 minutes I would love to have had Lucas Moura here, Dele Alli here. The last 15 minutes were difficult for us. Lucas and Dele are players we need and we could feel that today. When you look to their bench and then to ours the difference in attacking options. Hopefully, they will be back for West Ham because in this moment it is very, very important to change players.
It was not just Paul. They had Ighalo, they had Jesse, which is a guy who can change a game, Juan. That’s what the five changes can do when you have options

[Mourinho plays down hopes of big signings at Tottenham] Every club has its own situation and philosophy and approach. I’m not expecting to be in position of great spending. I’m expecting my club to be very balanced and honest in that kind of approach. We know that we are going to be in the same league, in the same world, as clubs that are going to do completely different to us. We have examples already of clubs investing, making important movements in the market and we are still nine matches from the end of the season. But we are always going to be very balanced as Tottenham normally is. Would I expect us not to do anything and stay with exactly the same squad? My answer is no. I would expect us to do some little important things, if we do them, and improve in two, three positions. I am completely open to the changes, completely supportive of the owners and let’s go for it. In this moment, I’m not even thinking about that because I’m focused on these nine matches.
I don’t know if Tottenham was in on the Fernandes situation, I cannot confirm or deny. But it’s obvious for us that there is a certain level of options that they are not for us and we have to admit that, but that’s a normal situation. United bought Fernandes, Chelsea bought Werner and Ziyech - they can do what they want, it isn’t our problem. We focus on ourselves. We are going to improve our squad, in the way we can do it. No problem.

[Jose Mourinho has vowed to be patient with Harry Kane as the Tottenham striker bids to return to his normal level] Harry did amazing. I don’t think any player being six months without playing football and after an important surgery and after a very difficult period to recover because of the lockdown rules affected a lot the recovering of players, I think nobody could do better than what he did for the team
Seven goals in 10 matches [under Mourinho, prior to his injury] would give an average of 14 in 20. An average of 28 in 40. So we are there. But of course, now we have to wait
And just because of one game, in a fixture where the majority of the strikers in the Premier League struggle to show that sharpness, to show that quality that they all have, people only turn to Harry. Because Harry is special, because with Harry anything less than scoring a hat-trick is not good enough. But I’m not that way. I don’t analyse things that way. I’m very, very patient. He will have all the time he needs to recover to his normal level
[The Tottenham manager insists he won’t need to dip into the summer transfer window for reinforcements in the final third if everyone can stay fit] It’s fantastic. Tottenham always had a fantastic group of attacking players and in the January market Steven Bergwijn coming even improved that. Not just to be one more, but to be one more fantastic player with great ability. So now we have the six players available which is a very, very good attacking force that allows us to start the game and have players on the bench to make changes in case we have a need. All I can say is with six attacking players available in this moment, I don’t need [to sign] attacking players.

[Mourinho denies rift with Tottenham outcast Ndombele] No. On the bench was Tanguy, was [Ryan] Sessegnon, Toby [Alderweireld], [Jan] Vertonghen. Who else? Gedson [Fernandes] and they didn’t play and that’s football. For me, there is nothing. I have attacking players on the bench, [Erik] Lamela and Harry [Winks], two great players to bring and then wings to give us more consistency. This situation of the five changes, some people maybe think that you have to do the five changes, you don’t have to do it, you have the chance to do it. I felt that the team was fine. I never believed that 2-0 was a completely safe result because of course they were trying everything and one goal could change our state of mind and give them the motivation they need for the last minutes so I decided to keep the team stable and three changes were enough
It’s not just him, I try to do the best for my team, I cannot start the game with 12 or 13 players, I try to do the best for the team. Sometimes I apologise to my players that are not my first choice because I feel the work in training is something that deserves more than what I give, but I have to do my job the best I can and I felt for these two matches I didn’t need him.
First of all, the three points were not important, they were crucial. I told the players that at half-time. Don’t think if we don’t win this match we still can think about chances because tonight is three points or nothing so three points fundamental, then great clean sheet

[Jose Mourinho hopeful Eric Dier will sign new Tottenham deal] Mr Levy tells me that he wants Eric to sign a new contract and Eric tells me he is more than happy here. He is more than happy with his situation, especially now that he feels that we have a certain idea for him and the team. He tells me that he wants very much to stay, so I hope they can find an agreement. I am trying to take the team in a certain direction and when I try to develop a player in the team, it’s because I’m waiting for the player to stay with us.
[Asked when he expects the FA to reach a verdict in relation to Dier’s case] I think they made the decision when Guendouzi grabbed the other guy by his neck. I think the decision was made in that moment. What do you want me to expect?
That is normal that a team qualifying or not qualifying for the Champions League makes a difference in terms of the economic situation. The two good things are that Mr Levy wants what I want - what the fans want - which is to win football matches and to try to win trophies. The second is that we don’t need many players, we don’t need huge investment. That’s not our profile as a club, with or without COVID[-19], with or without Champions League. I think we will manage to improve our squad
If I put myself in my day one and where my team was, and with everything that happened after that, I would say I would not be disappointed. The situation was incredible. But we are going to fight until we can. One objective is the points and the table, but we cannot forget the objective of working for the future, working for next season. We just want to play and see where we are at the end of the season. When the season is finished, we know that a couple of weeks later we are starting the pre-season, and then is the moment to fight.

[Jose Mourinho says Tottenham finishing outside top six not the end of the world] I believe, but it is also possible that does not happen. And if that does not happen it is not the end of the world. If that does not happen, it is probably the beginning of a new world because things change
Change for you, change for other clubs. The squads they change. The motivations they change, the group dynamic changes. The group that possibly was strong 10 years is ago is not strong anymore. A player that was in the maximum of his motivation is not anymore and vice-versa. It is also possible that we don’t get into a top-six position. And if that happens of course we have to look at it not smiling, but we have to look at it with optimism and look at it with a professional profile of next season has to be different. Because if you analyse Tottenham for example last year, how many matches did Tottenham win away from home? When I arrived I think it was almost a year without an away victory. If it happens (finishing outside of the top six), it happens but we don’t want it to happen and we are going to fight for it not to happen
[Jose: Spurs lacked desire at Sheffield United] There was a lot in the game, there was a possibility of shortening distances to Champions League positions, there was the possibility of being more stable for the Europa League positions fight. I believed in the evolution of the team and I thought that by a desire point of view, they put more than us. That’s something that disturbs me. It’s something that I feel, I don’t know, that’s my way of being - it’s something that destroys me a little bit on the inside because I think the last thing in football is when you have the feeling you could, you should do more.

Hamstring, which is something he’s had problems with in the past, even in this season, and is always something that makes the medical department think about it. They are in a very similar situation to us in the table. I don’t like to connect the club with some post or tweet. Maybe I am wrong, maybe I am right, but the person that did it probably did it by themselves. [Eric Dier: Jose Mourinho criticises decision to give Tottenham midfielder four-game ban] My feeling is that in the majority of the cases, football is not protected by the people that are powerful and doesn’t belong to this world. That’s simply my feeling. Powerful people - that doesn’t belong to the tribe. And they don’t have the feelings. They don’t have the know-how, and it’s very, very difficult to lead something when you don’t have a clue about the world that you are leading
I don’t think so honestly because if you appeal, you have other risks and let’s at least start next season without a suspension. We all know how it works with these FA decisions. You have access to the record of successful appeals and unsuccessful appeals… I don’t think we are going to appeal
[Mourinho, who also says the fan would be welcome back at the stadium once gates are open] The fan had the opportunity to meet the player, had the opportunity to apologise to the player, had the opportunity to understand that we are very well paid but we are not robots. We are very well paid but we have families and friends that support us in the stadiums. So I think it was a good opportunity for that fan to turn his profile and become a different fan. It was Dier’s own decision to do it, because the person in this case, first of all, is a Tottenham fan and was sorry about what happened. The way I was told he had the dignity to want to apologise to him. It was a nice thing that, in normal circumstances, especially after saying that he never felt under threat at any moment of the situation, would be enough for a fair decision.
[Speaking on Dier’s move from midfield into central defence] We made a decision together. I told him immediately since my arrival, ‘Let’s go in a certain direction but I think you are not ready, so let’s try to go back to a certain level being a midfielder but always with an eye of transforming you as a centre-back’, which is where he feels happiest. He is very comfortable on the ball, the building up of play and without any kind of problem attacking the space in front of him -being an extra man and building up play in the midfield. I think he is doing very well, we look forward to next season where from the beginning I have no doubts he will be there as a centre-back. I think he is going to be an important player for us.

I am not saying that Harry Kane scores 100 per cent of his penalties, but it is very very high. Normally at minute five we would be winning 1-0 against a team in trouble, I think the game would be completely. Like Sheffield, the man of the match was not one of the players. But at Sheffield I could blame myself and the players, today I could not do that different.
The performance was not good enough, but good enough to win. I am not saying a strong performance or a sharp one but good enough to win. In a way they surprised us with the way they played, since Bournemouth were in the Premier League I don’t remember them playing the way they did, but that is an option for them because they have a point they wanted. But I think we were not sharp, we were dominant behind, it was an easy game behind but then lack of sharpness in attacking areas. I made changes, I think the changes helped improve the game in the last part of the game, but we didn’t score goals and you don’t win when you don’t score goals.

[Jose Mourinho says Tottenham need to rediscover cutting edge] We want to keep our defensive organisation as it is giving us good numbers but we’re not scoring enough goals. We’re not being dangerous and attack-minded enough despite all the attacking players on the pitch. At the moment there is a contradiction between the amount of attacking players we have on the pitch and our production. We are arriving in good positions, we have good percentages of ball possession and spend the majority of the time in the opponent’s half. But there is no sharpness or objective - there’s too many touches, we’re not clear or aggressive or making sharp killer decisions
We cannot get any better players than what we have. I like them all. It’s one thing to say we are not scoring enough goals but another to say my players are not good enough - and my players are very good. So in relation to the transfer market - I don’t want to replace my attacking players.
[Oliver has been the VAR official in Spurs’ last two away games, where there were controversial decisions in both] I cannot speak about it, I don’t like to speak about it. I feel free to comment on the referee performances after the performances but I don’t like and I know from a legal point of view I can’t make comment before matches.
[Mourinho believes the referees and VAR officials should be made accessible after the games to explain their decisions] I think you should have access to them, I think you should have access to them to ask directly why. It is very important. They are very important in the game, I think so. It would stop nothing, make things much more open, much more clear. It would give the ref the chance to say, ‘Yes, I made a mistake - I feel sorry for that’, or ‘Yes I had incredible performance’.

[Jose Mourinho exclusive: I want to see my Tottenham against Arsenal] Maybe some of the boys want something different. When I am in a club, I like to be one of them and I like to feel what my people feel. It’s a new feeling for me when I move from club to club, but I learn that feeling very, very fast. I would say that the moment I put my foot in a club for the first time, I learn it automatically. So yes, I am one of them. In this case, one of us, which is Tottenham people. What is important for the fans is important for me
When I go to a derby as Inter manager, I know what it means for them. When I go as Real Madrid manager, I know what it means for them. And when I go as Tottenham manager, I know what it means for them. They can count on me to have exactly the same feelings, the same desire and the same passion that they have. When you are a player or a coach of a certain team, it cannot just be a job for you. You must have a sense of duty and a responsibility towards the people who love your club. For me, my club, my passion, my love, is the club where I am. In this moment, if you ask me if I know how important it is for Tottenham fans to look at their biggest rivals, then of course I know it and of course I share it
It was a moment where Benfica was really living a difficult moment and Sporting were the champion. We were going to the match with the whole country thinking that the champion would dominate the derby, but we won, and we won in such a fantastic way
[What, then, does he want to see from his players against Arsenal?] My mentality. I want the team to be a reflection of what the coach is. When that happens, that’s when you feel, ‘This is really my team’. This is something that is not a finger click. It’s a process. But if you have that feeling that it is your team even when you lose matches - because you will always lose matches - then that is when you are really happy.
The world changes, society changes, young people change. Everything changes and there is no way back. But we have to adapt to the new world. We have to adapt to the new football that, I keep saying, is not on the pitch, it’s the new football outside the pitch. We need to adapt to it, but when we believe strongly in something, we cannot give up and just play the safe side of it, just by saying that these are new times. When you really believe in something, you have to fight for it
To come mid-season to a team in this situation is not easy. I think it’s good, in relation to next season, because it helps you to prepare. But for the moment it’s not a very easy situation, especially for myself as this is only the second time I have done it in my career.
I think it’s a similar process to us. A coach that comes mid-season, trying to do things now that help the team to get a position in the table but that he can also transfer to the next season. So when they change system, when they go with four at the back or five, when they go with two in the middle or three, when they go with [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang as a nine or on the left, I think it’s a normal process of a team in this situation. Lately, they have found a way of playing that has given them very good results and I think this is the kind of feeling that a manager likes to have, because then probably the manager says, ‘Okay, this is working and it’s something that I must keep for the future.’ I think you have to look to the future and that’s what we are all doing.

[Mikel Arteta rues defeat to Spurs as Jose Mourinho sets sights on Europa League] I think the game was close… and was more tactical than others think. Mikel [has] found a way for them to play, to be stable and improve - they are improving - and we felt that we should adapt slightly to them and I think we did it very well. And the first period of the second half when they had more of the ball and more in our half, we were quite comfortable in that situation and the two midfielders did a great job. Then we found our chances, there was a great spirit and it was really hot and nobody thought about it, even myself, but Arsenal had 48 hours more than us to rest. So it was hard, but it comes from their hearts, this effort and battle and even in the last minutes of the game, there was zero problems, everything was under control.
There was a little bit more sharpness and aggression and in the transitions that we had, I think we could score a couple more goals but, to be honest, I think it would be unfair, a bigger difference than one goal, because the game was really hard. We are happy because we made the fans happy, because we are still in the fight for a Europa League position. I know that Chelsea and Liverpool they didn’t help us at all, but this is about us, we must do the points and we lost some important points. But now, there are nine to fight for
I’ve changed clubs a few times in my career and I could never say I was born a Manchester United fan or a Tottenham fan or Chelsea fan. I was not, I was born a Setubal fan. But in every club that I move to, I wear the shirt, I feel the spirit and I feel what is important to the fans. I know how important for Tottenham fans this victory is, especially because this season is not a season with many occasions to enjoy it. I’m very happy for that but I have to have a little bit more ambition than to win a north London derby. We want to play in the Europa League and we are going to fight until the last minute of the game against Crystal Palace to reach that

[Jose Mourinho tasted victory in his first north London derby as Tottenham came from behind to beat Arsenal 2-1 on Sunday] The game was more tactical than anything. I think Mikel [Arteta] found a way for them to play, to be stable and to improve - they are improving and we felt that we should adapt slightly to them and I think we did it very well. I think during the game nobody thought about it, even myself I didn’t, but Arsenal had 48 hours more than us to rest, so it was hard but come from their hearts this effort, this battle. Even in the last minutes of the game after 2-1, zero problems, everything under control so we are happy. [Jose Mourinho says Tottenham will give Serge Aurier the time he needs to grieve] In this moment, what myself and other people at the club have spoken to him about is just about supporting a person that had a tragic moment within the family. Everyone is different. People react in different ways so we are going to respect 100 per cent Serge’s decisions. [There is] no pressure from us. This afternoon, after training, we will have a better idea of what he wants to do
[Ndombele and Alli doubtful with injuries] Yesterday in training, Ndombele was injured. I don’t think he will be selected but we have another training session. Dele Alli may be training with us in the afternoon but I also don’t believe that he can be [available]. Serge Aurier, of course, is a big question mark at this moment. Every player is part of my plans. Every one. I don’t give up on players. No player has a privilege. Every player is for me the same. [There is] no problem at all.
[No decision made on Rose’s future] No decision is made. To be honest, since he left I have not spoken with him. His feelings are important. His happiness is important. I think Steve Bruce and Newcastle also deserve to have an important word on this situation. He is our player and he has a contract so everything is open. We have three more matches in the next couple of weeks. After that there will be plenty of time to make decisions.

[Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has branded the decision to fine Man City but overturn their European ban disgraceful and a disaster] If Manchester City is not guilty of it, to be punished by some million is a disgrace. If you’re not guilty you’re not punished. In the other way, if you’re guilty you should be banned. In any case, it’s a disaster. I’m not saying Manchester City is guilty. I’m saying if you’re not guilty you don’t pay. Even with a pound
I know that money is quite easy for them but still. If you’re guilty you should be banned from the competition. I’m nobody to know if they’re guilty or not. My criticism is for the decision.
I think it is going to be the end of Financial Fair Play because there is no point. In this moment, we are speaking about Manchester City but in the past other clubs were in a similar situation and you know the results of it. So I think it is better to open the circus door and let everybody enjoy and go inside for free and come out again. Do it with freedom.

[Jose Mourinho has asked why other managers are not questioned on team selection] Look, that is a question you normally do to me but you do not do to Frank Lampard, to Jurgen Klopp, to Pep [Guardiola], to all the coaches of the big clubs with big players. Frank Lampard plays [Christian] Pulisic, you don’t ask him why he doesn’t start [Callum] Hudson-Odoi or something. When Pep Guardiola plays someone and Bernardo Silva is on the bench, you never ask about Bernardo Silva. It looks like I am the only guy that has to play 15 players from the start, or I am the only guy who doesn’t have the right to have good players on the bench. If I start with Bergwijn today, you would now be asking me what Lucas [Moura] has to do to start, what [Heung-Min] Son has to do to start. They have to do nothing. They have to be team players and team players are player that start that go on the bench, that come in for half-an-hour, that come in for one minute
How many times has Nuno [Espirito Santo] left [Adama] Traore on the bench to win matches in the last 30 minutes. You don’t ask Nuno why Traore is on the bench and why he’s playing [Diogo] Jota or [Daniel] Podence or [Leander] Dendoncker. It’s just me. So he doesn’t have to do anything else, he’s a team player. He plays for Tottenham and if Tottenham wants to try and compete against the best teams, Tottenham cannot have 11 good players, they need more and we’ll have them on the bench
Against Arsenal, it was a bit of the same. We conceded and after that, the reaction was automatic and I think it’s what you need. I don’t like to hide things from the players, I try to always be very honest with them even if it’s something they don’t like, and I am a great motivator but I told them ‘I know you are tired and I know you only have energy in your brain, not in your legs. Your body is dead, but your brain is not and it is there you have to go and get your energy’ and I think the players were fantastic in this. I am so happy that no injuries are coming because it wouldn’t be a surprise for me with the players who are playing almost every minute of every game. 12 more days then finally they have a holiday and hopefully we manage to get a Europa League spot. It was the fourth match with two days in between and to manage to do 10 points in these four matches is what keeps us in the fight [for the Europa League]
[Kane notched up his 200th club career goal in the victory] He’s a young guy. If you feel 200 goals at this age with the remaining years he has in front of him, it is very normal that he speaks about going for 200 more. He is a fantastic player, a top goalscorer, he’s young and he has a lot in front of him. So I’m with him, let’s go for 200 more

[Jose Mourinho: Tottenham are better than Europa League level] I think Spurs would be even better than that without all the problems that we had. No other team had even similar problems. In the most difficult moments of the season, I was speaking about just surviving to leave us in a position where we could eventually fight for that. The fact that we are fourth [in the form table] since my arrival, without [Hugo] Lloris, Harry Kane, [Moussa] Sissoko and Son, is a good reflection of the potential that we have and the work we are doing. The minimum we deserve is to finish in a position that keeps us in European football, a competition that is not our level, we are better than that. Football is not about what you deserve, it is about what you get. We need to win these two matches now.
In quite a funny way, I’m telling the players: Two more victories to win the Europa League. I know it is not like that and the Europa League is a long competition and has some good teams, some from the Champions League, which makes it really difficult. It’s just a feeling to try to motivate the boys because our level is Champions League. I’m just trying to motivate the troops. It’s not possible that Sheffield United, Wolves or Arsenal have more motivation than us to get one of these spots. To play in the Europa League is good, you can rotate players and it’s a fantastic experience for younger people who for them, Champions League comes too early.
I’m not looking to that fight. I don’t know mathematically what is possible for them. They (Leicester and Manchester United) play the last game, I don’t know if things can be decided there. If United do it, they will do it by playing very well in the second part of the season. When you play well, you deserve. On top of that, everyone knows they were a bit lucky, more than one time. Luck that others didn’t have. That luck
