Desc If you make the switch from Real Madrid to Barcelona (or vice versa), you’d better prove your worth and Luis Enrique did just that when he signed for the Blaugrana on a free in 1996. The attacking midfielder struck double figures in his first season at Camp Nou and bettered his haul the following campaign as they won La Liga and the Copa del Rey. Enrique became Barca captain and, of course, later went on to manage the club, winning two Liga titles, three Copas del Rey and the Champions League.

[Luis Enrique on Rome] Roma are like a dessert that everyone is happy to eat

[Luis Enrique on Lionel Messi] He does things that I’ve not seen Captain Tsubasa do or what can be done on a Playstation video game – they border on the unimaginable

[Luis Enrique on Xavi] Xavi’s a player from another galaxy. He’s very strong physically. Get the ball to him and he’ll always get it back to you – he simply never loses it

[Barcelona coach Luis Enrique on Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez and their place in history as a top-tier attacking trio] For Barcelona I think so. I would even say in the history of football because to get players together of this level with their individual ability, to get that many goals and support each other in this way, it has never happened on any other team in recent history. I don’t know everything about the history of football but I would say yes [they are the best ever]

[on Messi, Suarez, and Neymar] The three up front can spot gaps where there don’t seem to be any. That’s why they’re so great

[Luis Enrique on Seung-Woo Lee] Lee has had some problems, going through a situation similar to that of Seung Ho Paik, who trained with us following an extremely unfair punishment. It is crucial these players have the chance to practice the sport they love at the level Barcelona offers them

[Barcelona coach Luis Enrique after his side were beaten by Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals] I am 99.9 per cent to blame for our Champions League exit. No, make that 100 per cent. I am the coach and I am responsible

[Luis Enrique on his squad] On paper, this is the best squad that I have had in my three years at Barca. We have a squad that has been strengthened brilliantly. All the new players have settled in well. They have quality and will have to compete for a place. It’s now up to us to see if we can retain the titles we won last season and also win more. I hope we can live up to expectations

2016 09 14 Retrieve

[Quotes on Luis Suarez] He has settled extraordinarily at Barcelona. He looks, not Catalan because Uruguayans could kill us, but he looks half-Catalan! What Luis Suarez does for us, not just his goals, but his work and character, is why we decided to sign him

2016 09 15 Retrieve

[Quotes on Luis Suarez] Suarez gives us a lot. What he gives us is priceless, non-negotiable. He gives us power inside the box, he’s irreplaceable. And he does a lot of good defensive work as well

[Quotes on Luis Suarez] He can decide games. He’s a pure scorer, who needs very little to finish

[Quotes on Luis Suarez] He has been a goalscorer all his life and will continue to score goals

2016 09 18 Retrieve

[Quotes on Luis Suarez] Luis is a penalty area assassin, a killer, capable of resolving any situation that crops up in the area. If we also consider the pressure he puts on defenders by closing them down and the way he encourages the others, then he is indispensable

2016 09 19 Retrieve

[Quotes on Luis Suarez] He’s not just an old-style striker; he can also combine with his team-mates, he reads the game well and he doesn’t need many touches to score. He also has the physique which is good for us and the character which is useful for a team like us, which is colder

[Luis Enrique on Lionel Messi’s groin injury in a post-match news conference following Barça’s 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid at the Camp Nou in La Liga] Without Leo we all lose. Football loses

[Luis Enrique is not worried with Neymar’s current goalscoring form at the club] We have to look at the amount of assists he created in other seasons [as well as goals] because this season he’s created a lot, surely more. But I don’t focus on the details of goals or assists. At the end of the day, I don’t think [how many goals he’s scored] is important. He’s a fundamental player for us, not just going forward, but also in defence and I am happy with how he’s playing. He’s an ambitious player and his objective is to improve his numbers and I am sure he will

[Luis Enrique reveals he hopes Denis Suarez can replace Andres Iniesta in midfield] Denis Suarez could be Iniesta’s long-term replacement, why not? Players have to evolve. He has to improve, but Iniesta is Harry Potter, he makes magic, and it is difficult to find another. But Denis is on the right path and I hope he can be Iniesta’s heir

[Luis Enrique announces in a post-match press conference, after his side’s 6-1 win over Sporting Gijon, that he will leave the club at the end of the season] It’s about how I live with my profession, with a never-ending quest for solutions and to improve my team. That means I have very little time to rest, very few hours to disconnect. I think it will be good for me at the end of the season because I need to rest. That’s the principle motive

[Luis Enrique speaks following the club’s historic comeback win over Paris Saint-Germain in the 0c71e5c6fbea598c07a146527e1e1223 Champions League Round of 16] This is a sport for crazy people, a unique sport. Any kid who was in the Camp Nou tonight will never forget this in their life. It was a torrent of feelings. I don’t cry – I would like to, but the tears don’t come out. But I enjoyed this as much as the rest; as much as those who cried

[Luis Enrique sees the funny side of a journalist sleeping during his press conference] Look, that’s never happened to me: A guy sleeping in the press conference! It’s the first time…I must have been very boring! Good morning! How you doing?! That’s very good! I don’t think I have any more to say!

[Luis Enrique praises Neymar in a post-game news conference after his side’s 4-1 win over Granada] He has numbers [which show he is] a beast of a footballer. He’s one of the most unbalancing players in the world [for opposition defences] and his signing by this club was a great decision. I hope he scores another 900 goals, so we can keep seeing him at Barcelona for many more years

[Luis Enrique speaks at his first press conference since taking over as Spain’s head coach] The team can evolve. A player must be given weapons. The team has been a standard bearer, with everyone studying what we do … We’ll continue to play a possession game but with subtle variations to improve things

[Spain boss Luis Enrique will consider Valencia defender Gabriel Paulista for selection if he becomes available to the national team] I am aware of every player who could be called up. Paulista is going through a process that could make him eligible

[Luis Enrique not ruling out Barcelona return] I think I can coach anywhere I’ve been [before]. I’ve left the doors open at all of them. My time at Barcelona was marvellous and I’ll always be grateful. I am very lucky to have been in a club for so many years that gave me everything

We have to try to prepare for the Euros in the best way and recuperate a good line of action, being in the hunt to win trophies. I see the national team capable of winning things - in fact that is one of the challenges that I think about as the head coach of Spain. I have never hid this, but it is obvious that we are within a process. And there are a group of other national teams with great potential. We are part of this group of six or seven national teams that can access the goals - our performance will say if we can get there or not

For a player to get a call up to the national team, they must meet a series of conditions. Firstly, they have to play in their team, play well, compare their level with other players and then fit in to what we want. Williams is a great striker and can definitely get a call up. We call players up who can contribute and I’m delighted that new players are emerging for call ups

[Ex-Barca boss Luis Enrique says Training Messi? You can’t tell him much as he’s already an artist] How do we train Leo Messi? There is a little bit of everything. I cannot tell him how to dribble or how to pass or shoot because he is an artist at those things and it’s clear that we don’t have to advise him on these topics. But things relating to the systems we use, situations or things as a more general level that benefit us, for sure we tell him. How to create pressure in a certain way, where do we want the ball, what spaces on the pitch should he be taking up to try to receive the ball […] we tried to influence him regarding all those things

[Luis Enrique says Iniesta the closest talent to Messi] The player that impressed me most in my career, I don’t know if you mean being myself as a player or as a coach or both, without doubt is Leo Messi. Afterwards, I can say that Andres Iniesta is close to something similar to Leo Messi. But Messi is hugely different in respect to the others

[Luis Enrique says Playing behind closed doors is sadder than dancing with your own sister] Playing behind closed doors is sadder than dancing with your own sister. You have to understand that football is a business – and it will help to pass the time during lockdown. I, if I was still a player, would like to start again as soon as possible. I am not afraid

I have always said that [Louis] van Gaal was the best or one of the best coaches I ever had. But over time I have realised that [Javier] Clemente (former Spain boss), through the energy he created and also his tactics, reached a new level. If he told me ‘go through here, go through there’, if he told me to throw myself in front of something then I would. I would have thrown myself in front of whatever was necessary for him. So yes – and this is the first time I’ve said it – I would like to have a lot of Javier Clemente’s qualities as a coach
