[USA midfielder Megan Rapinoe on Abby Wambach who recently announced that she will retire at the end of 2015] There’s a fearless spirit that is ingrained in American women’s soccer that we all owe to Abby Wambach

[USA women’s national team midfielder Megan Rapinoe after suffering a torn right knee ligament during training] I want to thank my team-mates and the staff for the amazing support I’ve received so far. I know I’ll be in the best of hands moving forward and I’ll be doing everything I can to get healthy as soon as possible. This is obviously a very difficult time, but I do feel super confident in my recovery as I’ve gone through this before and I know what the process will be like

[Megan Rapinoe speaks about what she wants her legacy to be] I feel too young for the legacy question! But I guess I’m getting old, so I have to accept that. I want people to remember me on the field as they do off it - someone who was passionate and lived with joy and happiness, who gave everything, was a good team-mate, who loved the game and tried to play it the right way and really enjoyed every minute I was able to play

[Megan Rapinoe reveals the challenges that she and her team-mates went through during the team’s overhaul since winning a third world title at Canada 2015] The last two years, there was so much changeover with the team, it was so broad with so many different players and formations and line-ups, and it sort of made it purposely chaotic. I think it forced us individually, and as a team, to figure it out, and everyone who has figured it out is now narrowed into this group here at qualifying and we’re working well with each other. It was challenging and sometimes frustrating, but we’re out on the other side of it and much better for it

[That preparation meant several different formation experiments, with Jill Ellis eventually settling on a 4-3-3 in 2017] It’s a much more aggressive style. I think it suits us, we want to get out and run and be very attacking-minded.

I think us three up front, especially for Tobin Heath and I, we’re happy to be off the wing and up a little bit higher with a little less defensive responsibilities. I think with the talent and our attributes going forward I think most of our efforts should be spent there

[World Cup can be a tipping point for the women’s game] You’re getting these incredible moments but the thing that’s going to sustain that is big investment. I think it’s investment, big-time investment, not just from a financial perspective but from an intellectual perspective as well. You have to build a solid business and oftentimes women’s sports has just bootstrapped so hardcore and the budgets are so tight that you can’t expect to have a business and increase your budget like a half a percent every year. That’s just not going to work.

[Rapinoe spotlighted two teams, one at home and one abroad, who can be examples for other owners to follow] I think that teams like the Utah Royals, teams like Lyon really put an investment in it and then the product on the field can grow with the product off the field

It’s exciting to have these huge crowds and the game growing as much as possible but I think the next step needs to be taken, otherwise you’re just going to get these exciting moments that don’t have any way to really be fully realized or sustained. I’m hopeful for the next part of it.

[The USA opened the World Cup with a record-breaking performance, as they scored an incredible 10 goals in the second half] We always want to have any world record and anything we can get over the Germans, we’ll take it. [Disgraceful? Classless? That’s exactly what the reaction to USWNT’s 13-0 win has been. The alternative to continuing to attack isn’t much better] You don’t want to really take your foot off [the pedal] like that. you don’t want to pass the ball around in your own half for 30 minutes.

[USWNT responds to controversy with golf clap celebration] I was trying to articulate to the team how during this tournament, you have these days in between, like [the media] have to talk about something new. I don’t think it really honestly bothered anyone. We know our intentions and we felt OK about it, but we want to have fun with everything of course.

[Though Lloyd said that Horan was involved in the planning of the celebration, Rapinoe wanted to also make sure she got a bit of credit as well] I’m always in the mix of course. I thought it would be funny. Everyone was kind of talking about, ‘Oh what if we did nothing?’ It was kind of hard through, we were holding back a smile for sure

[Rapinoe said she was also happy to have her teammate take it instead of her, but the team’s penalty-taking hierarchy ended up winning out] I took the first one obviously and I had given her the second one because I thought we could maybe just change it up and make the goalkeeper think about it even more. Alex is obviously very good at them. We had a long break and the coach was like, ‘You’re number one for a reason so get back in there and take it.

[In front of a sell-out crowd at Parc des Princes, one will be eliminated on Friday. Rapinoe is hoping that the interest and media coverage ramp into overdrive as the match approaches] Hopefully [it’s] a complete spectacle, just an absolute media circus. I think this is what everybody wants, these are the biggest games that you dream about as a kid.

[Rapinoe scored USA’s only goals in that match as Spain prevailed 2-1 to keep their hopes of retaining the trophy alive] We have a great burden of expectation, but I think that also brings out the best in you and we just except to win every single game. So if we’re down two-nil with 10 minutes left, we expect to win that game. We’ve been in those situations before and it’s just sort of ingrained in us

[Why sexist Donald Trump will have no effect on USWNT’s World Cup bid] I stand by the comments I made about not wanting to go to the White House, with the exception of the expletive. My mom will be very upset about that. I don’t think that I would want to go, and I would encourage my teammates to think hard about lending that platform or having that co-opted by an administration that doesn’t feel the same way and doesn’t fight for the same things that we fight for.

[History shows this latest skirmish between Trump and Rapinoe won’t have any effect on what the team is doing on the field] I’m not worried about destabilizing the dressing room. I think we have an incredibly strong dressing room. We’re very open with each other, obviously everyone knows who I am

[Megan Rapinoe only apologised for her swearing as she reflected on a promise not to visit the White House should the USWNT win the Women’s World Cup] I’ll just address it head-on and then we can get to the soccer questions. Obviously [there has been] a lot of news recently. I stand by the comments that I made about not wanting to go to the White House, with the exception of the expletive - my mum will be very upset about that. I’m obviously entering with a lot of passion considering how much time and effort and pride we take in the platform that we have and using it for good and for leaving the game in a better place and hopefully the world in a better place.

I don’t think that I would want to go and I would encourage my team-mates to think hard about lending that platform or having that co-opted by an administration that doesn’t feel the same way and doesn’t fight for the same things that we fight for. I’ll just leave it at that and I’m not interested in answering any of those questions. We can get to the real reason we’re here, which is a huge game.

[Megan Rapinoe has said her two-goal performance against France carries extra meaning for her because it was during LGBTQ pride month] Go gays! You can’t win a championship without gays on your team, it’s pretty much never been done before ever. Science, right there.

[Rapinoe insisted that her feud with Donald Trump didn’t give her extra motivation] I’m motivated by people like me and people who are fighting for the same things. I take more energy from that than trying to prove everyone wrong all the time. That’s sort of draining to me. So yeah, to be gay and fabulous during pride month at the World Cup is nice

We have been talking about this depth that we have for months and months and all throughout the tournament it was on full display tonight. It just felt like it was the best option not only for myself but for the team. It happened late in the second half of the France game. It wasn’t like one moment where it cranked up or anything and [I was] able to go 10 or 15 more minutes in the second half. I’m expecting to be fit for the final and ready to go. It’s getting better

[Megan Rapinoe has once again hit out at Donald Trump, saying the U.S. President should have better things to do than go after her on Twitter] I expect him to have a lot better things to do before that got on the to-do list. I’m sure he skipped over a number of things

I like to be open and honest. It feels weird to be any other way or to hold that back. I think becoming older and a little bit more secure with myself I’m probably becoming more brazen, but I think that’s always been there

[Rapinoe offered a bit more insight into her worldview on Wednesday] I think that I am particularly and uniquely and very deeply American. If we want to talk about the ideals that we stand for and the songs and the anthem and sort of what we were founded on, I think I’m extremely American. I feel very fortunate to be in this country, I’d never be able to do this in a lot of other places but also, that doesn’t mean that we can’t get better, that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t always strive to be better. I think that this country was founded on a lot of great ideals but it was also founded on slavery, and I think we just need to be really honest about that and be really open in talking about that so we can reconcile that and hopefully move forward and make this country better for everyone

[Megan Rapinoe has leapt to Alex Morgan’s defence after the United States captain was accused of being ‘disrespectful’ for her tea-sipping celebration in the Women’s World Cup semi-final win over England] Wah-wah-wah. I mean, it’s like, we’re at the World Cup - what do you want us to do? This is the biggest stage, the biggest moment. I don’t think anyone truly believes that we disrespect the game or disrespect our opponents. We have the utmost respect for England and every team that we’ve faced and every team that we will face forever and ever, that’s just part of the DNA of this squad. With that said, we work hard, we like to play hard and we like to have fun and enjoy ourselves, and these are the absolute biggest moments to do that.

[Despite the storm in a teacup that has followed, Morgan had suggested the pose Rapinoe pulled after her first goal in the quarter-final win over France was the best celebration of the tournament] I think I might have been upstaged. That was next level from Alex. Maybe we will have to do it at the same time and we’ll duke it out!

[U.S. women’s national team star Megan Rapinoe has slammed FIFA for a lack of investment in the women’s game and a lack of attention that led to three major finals all being scheduled on Sunday] That’s a terrible idea to put everything on the same day. Obviously there are two other finals going on but this is the World Cup final. This is like, ‘cancel everything day’. I don’t know how that happened. I think I heard somewhere that they just didn’t think about it, which is the problem that you just didn’t think about it when the World Cup final is set so far in advance. It’s actually unbelievable. So no, I don’t think we feel the same level of respect certainly that FIFA has for the men and just in general

[Infantino’s announcement was criticised by some, who noted that the prize money for the men’s World Cup is increasing from $400m in 2018 to $440m in 2022, meaning the increase of $40m is actually greater than the women’s increase of $30m] It certainly is not fair. We should double it now and then use that money to double it or quadruple it for the next time. If you really care about each game in the same way, are you letting the gap grow? I understand that for a lot of different reasons the men’s game is financially far advanced than the women’s game but if you really care, are you letting the gap grow? Are you scheduling three finals on the same day? No you’re not

[Rapinoe noted the major steps the organization has taken to ensure the next men’s World Cup takes place in its chosen location, including moving the tournament from summer to winter] We’re making a World Cup in Qatar happen. That’s the kind of care they have about the men’s World Cup considering all the issues they’re having there

It’s ridiculous. We’re crazy, that’s what makes us special. We’ve got no quit in us, we’re so tight and we’ll do anything to win.

That was what she’s been missing, just that little bit, all tournament. She’s been on the dribble, opening up everything for us. For her to get that reward on the biggest stage you possibly can, I’m so proud of her. She’s a superstar, not even in the making - she’s a straight-up superstar

Obviously getting to play at the highest level at a World Cup with the team like we have is just ridiculous but to be able to couple that with everything off the field and to back up all those words with performances and then back up all those performances with words, it’s just incredible

[After scoring the winning goal, Rapinoe continued her call for equality after fans chanted ‘equal pay’ at FIFA president Gianni Infantino after the game] To have a full stadium in a foreign country, the movement is just swelling before our very eyes. This is what the people want, give the people what they want! It’s time to sit down with everyone and really get to work. This game has done so much for all of us. What are we going to do about it? Gianni, what are we going to do about it? Carlos [Cordeiro, USFF president], what are we going to do about it? Everyone. It’s time to sit down with everyone and really get to work. This game has done so much for all of us, we’ve put so much into it. I think it’s a testament to the quality on the field. I don’t think everything else is matching that. How we do get everything to match up and push this forward because I think at this point the argument that we have been having is totally null and void

It’s time to move that conversation forward to the next step. A little public shame never hurt anybody, right?

[Rapinoe, who scored six times in France, was presented with both of her individual prizes by Infantino on the pitch after the game. Asked what they spoke about] Just pleasantries. [USWNT star Rapinoe sees positive outcome from Trump Twitter spat] Honesty, I see it as a positive thing. think when it was happening we did keep a really tight bubble and the whole group was so supportive of me, but it did feel positive in a way. Obviously, I think the tweets were negative in tone as he usually does, but I think we just even more so realized in that moment we’re so much more than what we are on the field. And I think this team really understands and is so prideful that we do carry with us other people when we step out on the pitch.

It’s the game of course and we want to win, but knowing the impact that we have already had and knowing the impact that we were going to have when we came home, the motivation of just that alone is incredible. I really feel like we do this for our group, for ourselves, for our team, for our staff, for our friends and family and for everyone. I think we always want to try to bring more people into the conversation. We want to have the conversation, we want to open it up to everyone. I think obviously we are very lucky to wear the shirt and represent America in a way that no team really does. We’re very lucky to play all types of games all year long and I think we do an incredible job of representing every American

Man, woman, immigrant, US citizen, person of colour, whatever it may be. ‘Equal pay,’ as the great Serena Williams said, ‘til I’m in my grave’

I would try to share our message. Do you believe that all people are created equal? Do you believe that equal pay should be mandated? Do you believe that everyone should have health care? Do you believe that we should treat everyone with respect? Those are the basics of what we’re talking about. I understand people feel upset or uncomfortable. There’s feelings of disrespect about the anthem protest or things that I’ve said in the past. Ultimately, I am here, open and honest. I’ve admitted mistakes. I will continue to do that. I’ll continue to be vulnerable and be honest and open and have that conversation

[U.S. presidential candidate Jay Inslee has said that he would want U.S. women’s national team star Megan Rapinoe as his secretary of state if he is elected] My first act will be to ask Megan Rapinoe to be my secretary of state. I haven’t asked her yet so this could be a surprise to her. I actually believe this because what I think what she has said that has inspired us so much is such an antithesis of the president’s foreign policies.

[Rapinoe has been outspoken when it comes to social issues, advocating for equal pay, LGBTQ rights and racial justice among other issues] I feel very fortunate to be in this country, I’d never be able to do this in a lot of other places but also, that doesn’t mean that we can’t get better, that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t always strive to be better.

[Rapinoe even brought up the prospect of a political career during a speech in last week’s parade in New York to celebrate her team’s World Cup win. Inslee may be disappointed with what she said] There’s no other place that I would rather be, even in the presidential race. I’m busy, I’m sorry

[Rapinoe made headlines for voicing her opinions at this summer’s World Cup, aiming words at US president Donald Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino] Do you, you know, believe that all people are created equal? Do you believe that equal pay should be mandated? Do you believe that everyone should have healthcare? Do you believe that we should treat everyone with respect? I think those are the basics of what we’re talking about. And I understand people feel upset or uncomfortable. I’ve admitted mistakes. I will continue to do that. I want to have that conversation because I think Trump’s message excludes people that look like me and that are me, of course, but it excludes a lot of people in his base as well. And I think that he’s trying to divide so he can conquer, not unite so we can all conquer

[USWNT equal pay dispute sees U.S. Soccer miss the mark with misleading claims. Though its women’s players are currently in a dispute over equality with their male counterparts, there’s little doubt that U.S. Soccer has far outpaced most of its international counterparts over the years when it comes to investing in the women’s game] We don’t often give them kudos, but that’s definitely one that I’m willing to give. They back the team in a very strong way and have pushed the game, not only in our country but around the world, to a level that without us, we wouldn’t be here in the world game. So I think that they do deserve a tremendous amount of credit for that, and we’ll continue to nudge them forward

[Megan Rapinoe explains why USWNT mediation talks broke down] I think there’s a little bit of room for the contracts to be different, our realities are different. But as Christen was saying, I think it’s fair for us to ask that when we play a game, and we win that game or we tie that game or we lose that game that we should be paid the same as our male counterparts

[Leaving the President somewhat red-faced, Megan Rapinoe is adamant the team’s gender meant Donald Trump struggled to deal with their success] We are everything he loves with the exception that we’re powerful, strong women. And he was having a really hard time - you could see in these sets of tweets: you hate us, you love us, you want us to come [to the White House] - and you are threatening us, all at the same time. People were like: ‘That was so intense!’ And I’m like: ‘Honestly, he’s a f***ing joke, so it wasn’t intense, because this is ridiculous’. I wouldn’t say that we’re anti-authority, but when there’s a person who is abusing their power or manipulating people, whether it’s a teacher when I was younger or Donald Trump now, there’s nothing that fires me up and grinds my gears more

[While more than happy to stand up to the US President, Rapinoe has shied away from a possible political career once she hangs up the boots] I don’t know quite yet. We’re getting a lot bigger of course. I don’t know if politics is where I want to be. I’ll always be very involved with politics in some way, but I think I might be too wild for politics at this point

[Barcelona open to future move for USWNT star Rapinoe] I am open to all offers, of course. The idea of playing abroad is very attractive. I love to travel. I played in Lyon for a year, and I loved it, maybe at the end of my career, I will play in Spain

[Discussing a potential move abroad, Rapinoe said that Barcelona particularly appealed to her because of their style of play] How Barcelona plays is beautiful and inspiring; it’s a joy to see them. Also, Atletico plays with such intensity that is always so much fun, and obviously, Real Madrid has great players, but Barcelona is number one in my heart

[Megan Rapinoe called on her fellow professional footballers to make the most of a unique opportunity to change this world forever] Some of the stories that have inspired me the most this year: Raheem Sterling and Koulibaly, their incredible performances on the field but the way that they have taken on the disgusting racism that they have had to face this year, but probably throughout their whole lives. The young Iranian woman who eventually set herself on fire because she was not able to go to the game, the one ‘out’ MLS player and the countless other ‘out’ LGBTQ female players who fight so hard not just to play the sport that they love but also to fight the rampant homophobia that we have. Those were all the stories that inspired me so much, but they also made me a little bit sad and a bit disappointed.

I feel like that if we really want to have meaningful change, what I think is most inspiring is if everyone other than Raheem Sterling and Koulibaly, if they were so outraged about racism as they were. If everybody else was that outraged as the LGBTQ players, if everybody was outraged by the equal pay, or lack there of, or the lack of investment in the women’s game, that would be the most inspiring thing to me. We have such an incredible opportunity being professional football players, so much success - financial and otherwise - we have incredible platforms. I ask everyone here to lend your platform to other people, lift them up and share your success. We have a unique opportunity in football, different to any other sport in the world, to use this beautiful game to change this world forever. I hope you take that to heart, do something, anything. We have incredible power in this room

[Rapinoe secured The Best award for the first time in her career, edging out fellow nominees Alex Morgan and Lucy Bronze after winning the Golden Boot and Golden Ball at the Women’s World Cup in France] Thank you guys so much for all of the support that you’ve given me over all of these years and especially throughout this past year. All of the coaches that I’ve had throughout my whole life, but particularly this year and the last couple of years. Our coaching staff with Jill Ellis and the rest of them have put us all in a tremendous position to be as successful as we have been. All of my teammates that put up with all my sh*t all the time and let me be a little bit wild at times but reel me in when I need that a well, thank you to all fo them currently and all of them that I’ve played with in the past. As Gianni Infantino was saying, this was an incredible year for women’s football. For those of you who are just noticing that now, it’s okay, you’re a little late to the party but we’ll forgive you. We’re just getting started. It truly was incredible

I never really want to put a limit on myself, but I think we’re probably pretty close to the top right now! [Megan Rapinoe says she is open to any and all offers after rumors linking the U.S. national team winger to Barcelona and Real Madrid recently spread like wildfire] I was like, ‘What did I say?’ I don’t remember saying that, but who knows because sometimes I say stuff. I was like ‘Did I say I was going there?’. I just thought I was open to all offers as always. I’ll entertain anything that has dollar signs next to it. It is interesting though. It’s cool to see all of these teams jumping in and seeing that interest, if there is interest, to see it from foreign teams about players. Hopefully, that becomes more normal, with interest in players coming over to our league and vice-versa. It’s going to be hard to lure us away from the travelling circus that we all partake in

[Rapinoe admitted that even her own parents were excited about the prospect of moving to Barcelona after they caught on to the reports surrounding the winger’s future] My mom and dad were already like, ‘Here we are over wine living out our pipe dream in Barcelona for a year’, and I was like ‘What? What are we talking about?’. But I don’t know. It might be nice, that two-bedroom apartment

[Women’s World Cup winner Megan Rapinoe has called on clubs, officials and fan groups to do more to eradicate racism from football] We’re not going to accept this. This is not something that’s going to be in our game. So I feel like all of the clubs and the presidents and fan groups and everyone, you know, frankly are failing these players. If you’re ever caught doing anything racist you should be banned for life. That’s just the end of it. I mean £65,000 is an absolute joke. For me I’m just like, make it super extreme so it’s damaging to the team, to the federation, so it’s damaging financially

[Megan Rapinoe has urged Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, as well as other leading male superstars, to be more outspoken on social issues including racism and sexism] I want to shout, ‘Cristiano, Leo, Zlatan [Ibrahimovic], help me’. These big stars do not engage in anything when there are so many problems in men’s football. Do they have the fear of losing everything? They believe that but it’s not true. Who would scratch Messi or Ronaldo’s names from the world of football for a statement against racism or sexism?

[Rapinoe suggested recognition of her individual achievements was in part due to the way she has been open to discussing key topics] This Ballon d’Or rewards both. On the one hand, I am a very good footballer. On the other hand, my activism attracts support. People understand that I act to find solutions to the problems in our society. The idea is to empower others to speak loudly

[Rapinoe was among the players to voice their anger regarding U.S. Soccer’s wording following Wednesday’s win] We’ve sort of felt that those are some of the undercurrent feelings that they’ve had for a long time. But to see that as the argument, as blatant misogyny and sexism as the argument against us, is really disappointing

But I just want to say, it’s all false. To every girl out there, to every boy out there, who watches this team, who wants to be on this team, or just wants to live their dream out, you are not lesser just because you’re a girl. You are not better just because you’re a boy

We’re all created equal and should all have the equal opportunity to go out and pursue our dreams, and for us that means playing on the soccer field. So, everything that was in that deposition, what they said in the argument is just not true. Don’t ever believe that

[Rapinoe continues Trump feud by labeling U.S. President as ‘white nationalist’] I think we know that immigration does not cause loss of jobs. Immigration is actually good for the economy. We know that women in the workforce is good for the economy. We know that equality is good for the economy. We know that mass incarceration is bad for the economy. We know that mass incarceration is bad for society and ends up costing us more money in the long run, the war on drugs, whatever it may be. I think that that has proven to be really detrimental. Now, obviously, we have a white nationalist, I think, in the White House and the spewing of hate and the ‘othering’ of the rest of the country has only led to more strife between people and more despair and more anxiety and more fear going forward. There’s been nothing to ease Donald Trump’s base, really. There’s been nothing, it’s not like he’s given them a bunch of jobs. It’s not like he’s made life really better for them, he’s just given them this false reason why maybe they’re not happy with their lives. There’s been no sort of path forward

[Rapinoe said the idea of a political career still seems wild but she’s not going to shut the door on it] I mean, President, of course. If I’m going to do, I want the biggest, baddest post. That way, I can be the president, but then I get to pick everyone else who’s way smarter and way more qualified and way better at everything to actually do the thing. I’m not here being like ‘I’m the smartest, I should be the president.’ I’m actually like ‘I’m wholly unqualified for probably any position in government,’ but I’ve got that little bit of humility where I can be like ‘You’re smarter, you do this, you do this, you do this.
