[Newcastle vs Wolves. Nuno Espirito Santo accepts the limitations of his squad before the China trip but has talked up the importance of the matches to his team] It going to be tough because we have a very short squad - we brought a lot of boys, U18s to help us. We prepare ourselves, but at the same time we are in a different environment, so we have to be flexible, patient. The Asia Trophy is very important, a very good competition. It’s one more step in preparation for the season ahead

: 2019 07 20 Manchester City failed to collect their first trophy of the 2019-20 season after losing the Premier League Asia Trophy final to Wolves on penalties. Following a goalless draw in Shanghai on Saturday, Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio saved three penalties to seal a 3-2 shoot-out victory for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side

[Wolves coach Nuno Espirito Santo has criticised the VAR process after his team had a goal chalked off in a 0-0 draw at Leicester City in their Premier League opener on Sunday] I didn’t see the images [of Dendoncker’s disallowed goal] - but I trust them. What can we do? [The VAR] has a TV and they can stop the image. But what I’m concerned about is let’s not ruin the game. Things that weren’t before should not be now. We have such a nice Premier League product, we cannot lose it. It’s what fans come here for - not to celebrate when [there] is no goal. That is not the real celebration of football. You celebrate when there is a goal. Creating these moments are not good for the atmosphere of the game

[Espirito Santo was adamant the VAR process for Dendoncker’s effort was drawn out] Yeah, [the VAR process is too long]. And then after, the fans of Leicester with all my respect, they celebrate it - a non-goal. That’s not the mindset of the game

[Wolves coach Nuno Espirito Santo says the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) cannot be allowed to affect goal celebrations after his side drew 1-1 with Manchester United] I didn’t want to lose that moment. I don’t know how they’re going to solve it, I gave my opinion to it, but it’s the emotion. You celebrate a goal and it’s such a beautiful moment, so when you are stood in silence waiting for it, don’t take that away from the people, because it’s the most important moment in football. I was hoping [Neves would score], not expecting, because he’s fantastic. He has this technique of kicking the ball, he’s done it sometimes before, but he has to do it over and over again because this is what counts

[Nuno’s men beat United at home in both the league and FA Cup last term and the head coach praised another high-class home performance from his side] I am proud of all the performance because this is what matters in this moment of the competition. It was a game of emotion, this is what Molineux enjoys and we have to thank them [the fans] so much because the atmosphere when we get control of the game and create chances, they really push us, amazing. Let’s do what we do, play with the energy we should play with, embrace the challenge and fight for the game. The boys fought for every single ball, it was so good, I’m very proud of them

We have such a nice Premier League product, we cannot lose it. It’s what fans come here for - not to celebrate when [there] is no goal. That is not the real celebration of football. [Everton v Wolves. Wolves recorded a convincing 3-1 win on their last visit to Goodison Park in February, but Everton have only been beaten once at home since then] That shows how good they are, and how well they do things. What we did [against Torino] was amazing, but now we have to think about a very good squad and a very good manager. It’s going to be a very tough game for us. All the moments of the game are going to be key. The shape, the organisation, has to be there. This is the most important thing. Whatever the game gives to you, you have to react to it. We try to give the best answer in that moment. We immediately reacted [after conceding against Torino]. Sometimes it takes longer, but the idea is to maintain the spirit - regroup and go again

[Wolves vs Chelsea. The hosts are hoping to cap a special day with a memorable result as Molineux will celebrate its 130th Wolves anniversary] 1889, it’s been a long, long time. It will be special, of course. Molineux is our home so it will be a good day. It shows the support we have been receiving from Molineux every game. The atmosphere, the way the fans push the team and help the team in such difficult moments. Tomorrow is going to be a very tough game, we’ll need that support and we’ll have it. Always together

[Nuno rued defensive mistakes after Tammy Abraham’s hat-trick, along with goals from Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount, left Wolves second-bottom in the Premier League table] Bad performance, bad game. We started well - good pressing, good organisation - but we suffered a goal and didn’t react well. We made a second mistake and were two goals down. It was tough, we didn’t perform. Too many goals, too many mistakes. What I think is [we have to] realise what happened and not repeat it. We have to work hard and go again on Thursday [against Braga]. Of course, we have to change, we have to improve. We have to become better and we cannot make mistakes. The only solution: work. Sometimes it was credit to Chelsea, good goals, but some of those from the eight [conceded in last two games] were clear mistakes that we must not repeat

[Emery’s successor at Arsenal? Nuno not distracted by ‘not real’ Gunners links] [Rumours] are not a distraction. You know me. I don’t talk about ifs, I don’t talk about possibilities, I don’t talk about things that are not real. I think you know me well enough and you know that I’m not going to answer about that. I will never mention an issue that’s not a reality. Mainly because the job has a manager in it. It would be disrespectful

[Asked if he was happy at Wolves] I think we are doing okay. It requires a lot of work and every day is a chance to improve and this is what we want to do all together

[Nuno Espirito Santo says Jose Mourinho is one of the greatest managers in the game] He’s one of the greatest managers in football. It will be a pleasure to receive him here in Molineux, a tremendous pleasure to have him. I don’t have to say many things [about him] - just see what Mourinho has done wherever he goes. We’ve had too much work since the beginning of the season [to speak]. We don’t switch off, we’re always working to prepare ourselves, this is what it’s all about. It will be a chance to catch up after the game, but now I’m focused on what we did on Thursday, we will watch the game, there were players training in the afternoon and then we have to prepare

What I know is that it’s going to be a very tough game. [It’ll be] competitive for sure, against a fantastic team, fantastic players, fantastic manager, so it will be very tough for us. This is what it’s all about, to compete - no matter what opponent you have, let’s go

[Wolves slipped to eighth after their first defeat in any competition since October] Some mistakes, but I’m very proud of the way we performed. We keep on going. Okay, we didn’t get the result we wanted, but we did what we wanted to do. We keep on going to the next one

[Nuno Espirito Santo says Jesus Vallejo is expected to return to Real Madrid this month after struggling during his loan spell with Wolves] I’m going to be clear: Jesus probably is going because he wants to play. He’s a young and talented player that we brought here with high expectations, but it didn’t work out. It’s time for him to go and find a club where he can play and keep on progressing because the talent is there. It’s based on reality. He had moments that he played, moments that he performed well, and some moments he didn’t perform well. That’s the case of Vallejo. Clearly, it didn’t work out. When things don’t work out, you have to look at yourself as a coaching staff. How can you make things work for the best? Sometimes you don’t have time, it’s three parts: you, the player, the clubs, all these things

[Vallejo’s exit is expected to be sanctioned as fellow defender Willy Boly is close to a return to action] He’s running already on the pitch and I’m so happy. Naturally, he’ll improve - it’s a good sign

[Nuno admits Raul Jimenez future may lay away from Wolves amid Man Utd interest] It’s the first-time I heard it. Ole didn’t mention anything about that. But the transfer window is open. When it is open, anything can happen. [But] we are delighted to have Raul

[Nuno did however appear to confirm that Patrick Cutrone’s days at the club may be numbered] Yesterday I had a good conversation with Patrick. We decided for him not to be involved tonight. So let’s wait and see. Maybe something will be happening about that

[Fiorentina have signed striker Patrick Cutrone from Wolves on an initial 18-month loan with the obligation to make the move permanent] It is disappointing for us, with the whole situation. When you bring a player and things don’t immediately work out, you have to think what happened, why and how it could be different, all of these things. Now is the moment for us to analyse, but more importantly that we wish Patrick all the best. Hopefully he can play some game time, which is important for his development.

[Wolves have entered the race to sign Thomas Lemar from Atletico Madrid in January] It’s obvious that we must bring players. It was not the best game, it was difficult, not many spaces, but the final delivery should be better. We are working and hopefully things work out and we can solve it. We need solutions, we need more than specific positions, players that can bring us different situations, that can help us in these kind of games

[Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo believes football’s handball rule needs to be changed, saying fans have made their frustration with it clear and loud] For sure it’s going to be reviewed. I have been encouraged by the reaction of everybody involved; the managers, the players, the fans, the press, everybody’s seen that it’s not ok. If it’s not ok they have to take different measures and change it.

We are not talking about VAR, we are talking about the handball rule. But the rule is the rule, so let’s not be mistaken, but it has to change, it has to change, for sure. [IFAB] meet, but I think the managers will meet also soon. Everybody’s worried about that. The message is so clear, isn’t it? It’s clear and loud. You see all over the stadiums people shouting and it’s not good.

The fans are the most important things in football. The fans are what make things have sense and, if the fans are not happy, that’s a bad sign. I’ve spoken to other managers about it, of course, and their opinion is not only me, everybody speaks about it. But we, of course, suffer more because all the decisions were against us. It’s too much. Too much

[Nuno believes they need to invest in the squad this month if they are to build on a strong start to the campaign] I’m confident there’s going to be something soon. I don’t mention names, but we need and are going to bring in players, for sure. The idea is players that can bring new solutions. I’m aware of things, we think, we decide, and things take time, but no frustration at all. It’s a problem and this is not the best window to do things, it’s not the best time to operate in the market, but we need players. The way we work is not going to change

[Nuno Espirito Santo on Adama Traore] We don’t give up on players ever - we try to improve them. That is growth and the natural process. Some players take longer and some players can express themselves sooner in the team. If he doesn’t give you a fantastic performance in one game or during a period, you cannot give up

[Nuno Espirito Santo said that beating former manager Jose Mourinho was not a big deal after his Wolves side came from behind to defeat Spurs 3-2] It’s nothing special. [it] was a very, very tough game. I have huge admiration for Jose Mourinho, for me he is a reference

It’s amazing the energy levels that we put into the game. They recover very well. It’s a challenge, and when you really embrace the challenge you give everything you have, and this is what we are doing

[Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo believes it is absurd to keep football going amid the widespread chaos caused by the coronavirus outbreak] You play a game of football and then realise what is happening worldwide - people dead and dying. Then we play a game of football - it’s absurd

[Wolves’ substitutions changed the game as they earned a 2-0 win at relegation-threatened West Ham thanks to goals from Raul Jimenez and Pedro Neto] We performed well, we played good. We were very organised and controlled the game. We didn’t create many final actions, but we produced a lot of situations

In the second half, we had some speed, some more accuracy in delivery, so we did well. We needed this to feel we are really back again; it’s too bad, the fans should be here, but it’s different for us and everybody. It’s good to have football back, let’s try to produce good games so the people watching enjoy

The players will never get used to it, let’s hope and pray something comes along like a vaccine so we can play in front of fans again

[Nuno Espirito Santo unsure if Adama Traore will remain at Wolves] I don’t know. He is here now and he has trained well today and he is ready to go [play] tomorrow. It is day by day, no speculation, and [we] just focus on what we have to do and prepare for Bournemouth

[Traore has developed a reputation as an impact substitute but the former Barcelona trainee is pushing strongly for a starting place against Bournemouth, although Nuno refused to be drawn on his team selection] He must keep working. Adama is a special player, he is unique, and I think when he is on the pitch he already has an impact on the game. Of course he has things to improve and then after that it is our decision how we use players and manage the team in the game plan and the moment. The momentum and the moment we are in after three months of activity, we have a lot of things to judge on and try to make the right decisions.

Bournemouth are a good team. It is a team that plays good football and has very good players and a fantastic manager. The games are so tough and what is happening to Bournemouth can happen to anyone. A bad run is very difficult to bounce back from but I have all the respect and admiration for Bournemouth

[Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo says Champions League not needed to keep stars] I don’t think that’s the reason they are here. The reason is they enjoy working together so we don’t have to achieve anything to retain them. At no point am I thinking about it. We don’t think about that (the top four). There’s no race for anything, the race is to compete, improve and make good games. This is the challenge for every team in this moment. I’m very proud of the work we have been doing. We have begun to build something, we did the right things and we are still in a building process. We have achieved important and remarkable things but still have a long way to go, there is still a lot of room to improve. When we started we didn’t know what was in front of us but we know we had a fantastic club to take care of and try to become as huge as it was in its past history

I expect Villa to be very difficult because they have good players. The table doesn’t mean anything, in this mini tournament we have anything is possible. We look at Villa as a strong opponent. I appreciate Dean (Smith), I respect him a lot. We are rivals and it’s special for us.

[Wolves kept up their 100 per cent record since the Premier League’s return with a 1-0 victory at Aston Villa on Saturday] We have a good week now to recover. It’s a tough cycle, this was a third game in a week and we know what is in front of us. We have to prepare ourselves for the next challenge

We know what is in front of us, we know how we do things. The how is more important, how we prepare ourselves for the next one. We have to reinvent ourselves for a tough challenge

[Champions League spot not on Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo’s mind] There never was and there never will be [any thoughts about qualifying for the Champions League]. Because it is day-by-day, day by day. Tomorrow is Saturday and we play Arsenal. I am not thinking about anything else

It will be a different game tomorrow. Arsenal changed their manager last year - and he has different ideas - but they are a very talented squad. So tomorrow is a new one. New things will happen, new situations will require new answers from us.

You can see different things [from Arsenal now]. I think Mikel (Arteta) is trying to put his ideas across. The talent of the players at the club is immense. Big club, big players and we expect a tough, tough challenge. It will require a lot from, a lot, a lot, a lot

[Wolves’ success since restart under Nuno Espirito Santo is down to style] You go and play with your friends and bring Pele, Maradona, Ronaldo and Messi. I will bring me, Max [Fitzgerald, the head of media] and Alison [Matthews, the first-team administrator] and we will win the game. Everything begins here. Everybody in the squad knows the tasks that they have to work on in training and in competition. They go home knowing what they are going to find tomorrow. Every player goes into the game knowing the process and what we want to achieve

The utopia is to have a shape that can cope with everything. What we want is to build something that can cope with every moment of a game. When you have the ball and when you don’t have the ball. When you have to chase a result and when you have to protect

[Arsenal brought Wolves’ charge for the top four to a screeching halt with goals from Bukayo Saka and Alexandre Lacazette giving the Gunners a 2-0 win at Molineux] It was a balanced first half. I think both teams were organised, good possession, not too many chances with the expectation of one moment where we lose a little bit of our organisation and focus and Arsenal scored

In the second half, I think we started better. We started pressing and really put Arsenal deep on the pitch, creating chances or a moment we could go for the draw, but we knew as the game goes by, it becomes dangerous in the counter-attack and Arsenal have good players. It was not the best of games but the work was there so let’s go for the next one.

It doesn’t change the way we see things. Other results and the table is not what guides us, what guides us is how we did things today and we wanted to do things that we would not be able to do. Credit to Arsenal but we much improve our circulation much faster and don’t focus on anything else, only focus about how we want to do things and prepare for the next challenge

[Manager Nuno Espirito Santo says league position coupled with other results from the teams around them will not change the way they are approaching the final few games of the season] It was a balanced first half. [Nuno Espirito Santo not phased by claims Raul Jimenez should join Manchester United] It’s not an issue for us, we have a competition and a game to play. We have a lot of things in front of us. It’s not the moment to think about anything else. I’m sure Raul is totally, 100 per cent focused on what he has to do at Wolves. They are things which you can’t control, it’s up to you to decide if you pay attention or not. I admire Tata (Martino), he is a big manager, and honestly it doesn’t distract us

[Sheffield United are four points behind in ninth with Nuno paying tribute to opposite number Chris Wilder] We know Sheffield [United], I know Chris. [John Egan’s 93rd-minute winner earned Sheffield United a crucial 1-0 victory that kept their European dream alive and dented Wolves’ in the process] It could have gone both ways, they had chances, we had chances. It’s hard to create chances against Sheffield United, they press really high and that requires different things from us as a team. But we created chances with clear counter attacks where we should have done better. In the end it looked it was going to finish [with a point] but we didn’t stay focused. We must defend better at the corner

[Nuno Espirito Santo has been named the Premier League manager of the month for June] We are pleased with the award, but as you know, the words are for all the group, especially for the medical staff who allowed us to return safely in a good way. They are our true heroes because what they have done behind the scenes was huge for us and that was what made it possible for us to compete well in the return of the competition, so this reward is for them

[Wolves to wait until summer for Adama Traore shoulder surgery decision] I don’t know. During this period when we didn’t compete, Adama was able to do a special programme for his shoulder. What happened in the game was a setback, but he is able to deal with the pain, he is able to deal with the competition side of the game. You can see that he is almost normal. It is something that he has to overcome mentally and after, we have to address it in a proper way. But I’m totally confident that for now, he’s okay. It’s something that we have to decide together. I think he needs a scan, he needs to have a good opinion from the doctor and then we’ll decide. What is important now is that he’s okay, struggling of course because the pain is there, but he’s been able to compete.

We must be proud of how we have done things. The ‘how’ is very important with us. There are still games to go, let’s focus on that. Sometimes it’s important not to lose the perspective of things. There are some moments when you are able to see things over all the time we have been working together - it’s almost three years now - so let’s keep on being together and improving.

[Wolves brushed aside Everton 3-0 at Molineux on Sunday with new boy Daniel Podence shining on his first Premier League start for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side] You are in pain (after a defeat) but you stand up the next morning and you have to go again. That is the game. We had a lot of actions today and didn’t concede too many chances, it’s always about trying to upgrade and raise the standards

It was not our main objective (keeping in touch with the top four), there were things we should improve. It’s not about that, it’s about trying to create and raise standards so we become a better team. Our finishes were not so good, look at the chances we had. Adama is not going to have an easier one

[Chris Wood’s 96th-minute penalty secured a 1-1 draw for Burnley to dent Wolves’ Champions League hopes] We had plenty of the ball and created some great situations and it was a fantastic goal from Raul. It’s always hard to take […] every goal you concede is hard to take and a goal in the final moments is even harder. I always felt we were in control and the team played well. Sometimes, justice doesn’t exist in the game, this is football. The players completed well but we have to now focus on the next game. I don’t live based on ifs, I live based on reality and the reality is to prepare for the next game. I’ll only be thinking about that

[Nuno Espirito Santo insists Wolves will continue to develop amid Champions League ambition] I think we are improving and always trying to become better, knowing it is a difficult season of ups and downs. But I think we will always be able to react to the not so good performances and bounce back and play good after those games. It is always the same and has been this way since three seasons ago. I think it is a long process of building and improving and we are still on the way

It is important to improve but it will be tough, because it is a good team with good players, quality players, and we expect a really tough game. We will focus on the team of Crystal Palace and try to be organised. I think it is the best way to approach it.
