Job French Footballer
Desc The Frenchman has been much maligned over the years, often criticised by supporters and former players in the media, but there can be no doubting his contribution to Arsenal’s top four finishes and FA Cup triumphs. The same applies at international level, where his excellent link-up play continues to be highly rated by Didier Deschamps, and Giroud’s selfless display in Russia helped France lift the World Cup in 2018

[Olivier Giroud on the Arsenal supporters signing an adapted version of ‘Hey Jude’ in his honour] I’m really proud to have my own song. It gives me goosebumps! It’s really nice [to hear] when you are on the pitch. I love the English pop-rock, so I love The Beatles

[About his spectacular goal in the 2014 Community Shield] I had a look at the keeper and I was thinking that he was a bit too much forward from his line. I tried instinctively to shoot and to hit the target. I was a bit lucky but that’s what I wanted to do

[Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud tells about one of his childhood fears] This is so funny, but my brothers are older than me - I was the youngest, and they used to tease me about a kids TV character called Alf. Do you know him? Alf the Alien, my God he was so ugly and I was so scared of him. My brothers used to say, ‘Be careful, Alf is going to get you tonight!’ They went too far with it!

[Olivier Giroud jokes that his scorpion kick was better than Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s] Actually, they were teasing me, saying that the Mkhitaryan one was better! It’s crazy that two similar goals were scored in one week. I don’t know if I got inspired, it’s destiny. He did very well as well, but I think mine is better! But to be serious, it was funny in the dressing room, we were all surprised by what happened

[Olivier Giroud tells about Les Bleus’ ambitions for Russia 2018] We are competitors, we are going to do better than in 2014. The goal given by the Federation is to go to the semi-finals, But, five days before the final, you will try your hardest, do not calculate, do not think, and go for it

[Olivier Giroud reveals his ambition to set a new scoring record with Les Bleus] I’ve equalled Zinedine Zidane and that’s something no one can take away from me. Trezeguet has three goals more and I want to catch him up and score as many as I can. On a personal level, it’s an objective, an ambition

[Olivier Giroud believes a focus on mentality is the reason why this France team is different to the one that lost the European Championships final to Portugal in 2016] It’s different. After the semi-final when we won against Germany we were a bit euphoric, whereas against Belgium it was different. It’s not the same feeling - we know we still have one game to win. There’s that real focus and concentration to finish the job - that’s why it’s different. We’ve come a long way to get here and we don’t want to waste this opportunity now. You can’t win a World Cup on just talent. Talent alone is not sufficient. You need efficiency. The mental strength is 70 per cent of the job. If you’re ready to work for your team-mates and each other with dedication and commitment then anything can happen

[The Chelsea striker is yet to score in Russia, but knows his role is part of the bigger picture in creating team balance and fluency] Against Belgium I missed efficiency, luck and something to score but hopefully I can have it for the final. In 1998 [Stephane] Guivarc’h played a good World Cup but didn’t score and I think I’m doing a good World Cup, I’ve assisted three times for goals, I’m committed and the work rate and the work every single player puts in is very important. I feel like I give everything for the team and if one goal has to come then hopefully it will come and it will come on Sunday, but if we are a world champions and I don’t score, I’m okay with that

2018 09 06 Retrieve

[Giroud defends goalless World Cup] It necessarily results in a little frustration. But it has largely been filled by the title. The collective takes precedence over individuals. I often had to do a little bit of different work, make sacrifices to help the team hold the lead. In fact, you have less energy to be decisive in the last third. Except against Belgium in the second half, I do not have the memory of having missed many opportunities. I even produced two assists. My zero goals does not stop me from sleeping. In the street people tell me: even if you have not scored, you have been important. We might not have been world champions if I scored. Statistics can be used for anything and everything. I was decisive in another way

[Reaching further landmarks are still well within Giroud’s sights, with his 81 caps and 31 goals already having earned him a place among France’s elite] A team-mate at Chelsea already asked me this question. As long as I feel good, can bring something to the team and the coach calls me, I am available. I am aware of being closer to the end than the beginning. So I enjoy every moment. I do not put myself any barrier, I do not set any limit. It would be a nice figure [100 caps], but before, I would like to rise to among the top three scorers in the history of Les Bleus. For now, I share fourth place with Zizou [Zinedine Zidane] three only behind [David] Trezeguet. This podium, it would also be a way to mark the story, even if boys like Antoine and Kylian will exceed me

[Giroud become France’s third outright all-time goalscorer with 35] It’s a goal. The most important thing is always collective success, I always put the collective success first. But it is true that on the personal level, it is necessary to be decisive. I hope to join Michel Platini, we’ll see

[Olivier Giroud has admitted it was hard to score against Arsenal but said he was proud to win the Europa League with Chelsea] It was an interesting first half but there were no goals. It was a good final and we were better, more efficient in the second half. I am very proud, this team deserved to win something. It was special for me, I am happy for this club. It’s my second trophy in two years.

[Giroud appeared not to celebrate his goal, and he offered an explanation as to why] These two clubs changed my life, they gave me the opportunity to play in the Premier League. I didn’t want to celebrate at Arsenal, but I am so proud to win this trophy with Chelsea

When you give me the chance to get game time I always try my best. It was our second target to win the Europa League after finishing in the top four, so I feel blessed

[Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud admitted he found Maurizio Sarri’s decision to sign Gonzalo Higuain rather than give him a regular starting place annoying] It is true that at one point I went to see him [Sarri] when I did not understand his choices. He gave me explanations. What was annoying is in January, when he preferred to recruit an attacker who he knew very well, Higuain, it was not easy for me to reap any benefits. As usual, I tried to stay focused to prove that I could play. I tried to stay focused to prove that he was wrong about some of the choices. But when you bring in a player in January it’s hard to put him back on the bench and disown him.

[Prior to his arrival he spent five-and-a-half years at Arsenal] I have at least another year in England and the chances are it will be more than a year. I do not see myself anywhere other than in Chelsea. I did not have a lot of playing time in the league, and it’s not something that pleased me, but I tried to be effective every time I played. I did not give up, despite my frustration. We’re going to start over for next year with a few changes, I’m happy and I cannot wait to get back. I won a title this year. It’s a great pride to continue at a club that wins titles and is expected to challenge for the Premier League. I am very happy to continue, whoever the coach is next year

[Olivier Giroud says Frank Lampard is the perfect choice as Chelsea coach while they are operating under a transfer ban] I like his energy and desire to always improve and win. I think he is the right person. He is basically a Chelsea legend. We all believe in his quality to improve the team and with the transfer ban it’s a good opportunity for the young players to show what they can do. Now we’re excited to play the first league game

[Former Gunners striker Olivier Giroud says his fellow Frenchman Laurent Koscielny is very hurt by the unfortunate episode. Laurent Koscielny may have gone AWOL at Arsenal in an effort to force a move away from the club] Lolo is a good friend of mine. I’ve known him now for 10, 11 years. We played together in the second division [in France, at Tours]. He’s been playing for Arsenal for nine years; he’s been the skipper for so many years - very respectful, very professional, always the best example for the young players. The club gave him the opportunity to play at Arsenal, and it was a big, big opportunity for him to show his quality in the Premier League. I think he has always been grateful about that and respectful to the club. I don’t understand how we have got to this situation. I feel very sad for him because he’s a great person and the media wants to give a bad image of him. I’m not at the club, I don’t know what really happened - but one thing for sure is Lolo is very hurt by what’s happening and he’s an emotional person

I didn’t want to leave. I spoke with the boss - at this time, Arsene - and I told him: ‘Look, gaffer, I need some game time to play at the World Cup, that’s massive for me’. At the end of the day, we won it, so it was very important for me to leave. It was tough for me, but it was amazing to sign for a club like Chelsea. It was like an improvement for me because - OK, it’s Manchester City now - but Chelsea have been the best club in England over the past 10 years. It was a new challenge with big motivation, big targets

[Olivier Giroud believes Chelsea are capable of challenging for the Premier League title in 2019-20] I think he’s got the squad to compete in the different competitions this year. Many young players sometimes have to go on loan to get some game time. This transfer ban gives them an opportunity to play more, show their qualities and - honestly, trust me - we’ve got plenty of young, talented players at Chelsea. The Champions League is very tough. We’ve got a talented squad, but it’s quite young. Everybody knows the Champions League is a lot about experience. We’re going to fight in every competition - but the main target will be to compete with City and Liverpool for the Premier League title

With Arsenal it was difficult to fight for the title. We were always fighting for the Champions League places. I won a few FA Cups and Community Shields. When you can’t win the league, winning the FA Cup is quite nice, so I’ve got amazing memories. Chelsea is a club where you have maybe more expectations, higher expectations. They were winning more titles these past 10 years and obviously Arsenal wants to come back to the ‘Invincibles’ days, but it’s not easy. I’m not going to say we are doing things better at Chelsea. We just try to be as competitive as we can, to step up and win more trophies

2019 07 22 Retrieve

[Olivier Giroud is hoping to help fill the goal gap at Chelsea following Eden Hazard’s summer switch to Real Madrid] The numbers of goals Eden scored, I don’t know if I can take that from him but we have several strikers with different qualities. We have the quality and the quantity in the squad but obviously you know you cannot replace a player of Eden’s quality just like that. But that’s over. Now we need to forget and not put too much pressure on players who will play in his position. I’m thinking about the young players. I will take the pressure no problem if it can release them. We know there are a lot of expectations but, even with the transfer ban, we have a lot of quality and ability up front

[Giroud has also offered his backing to Lampard, with a Chelsea legend in the process of getting his message across after inheriting the managerial reins from Maurizio Sarri] It seems very clear that he wants the best from us. He wants to help us improve and he has a clear idea of what he wants to achieve. He’s a competitor, he wants to win every single game. We’re working on the tactics when we don’t have the ball and playing this 4-2-3-1 we have to know each other a bit better as well. He repeats every day that we have to take responsibility and we have to show personality. He’s insisting a lot on this kind of stuff, playing without fear but with confidence. I think we will learn quickly

2019 08 16 Retrieve

[Giroud: Chelsea under Lampard will have freedom & be fearless] Lampard always tries to be very positive. He’s not going to be tough with us when we’re not doing well or put us above the mood - if I can say - when we are doing well. He is always trying to analyse the situation and he said he was very proud of our performance after the games. He said it was tough to lose like that, but we need to keep our heads up but, one more time, he said he was proud of us.

To be honest, it was very painful straight after the game. I’m very disappointed for the team because we showed a great strong team character after the tough result at Old Trafford. Everybody said that Liverpool would be the favourites but we played at least as good as them and we created a lot of chances and we felt we had the best chances to score the third goal and win the match. It’s very unlucky. I’m not used to saying that in football because it’s never random. We’ve done a very good team performance and I’ve been very proud of the boys

[The French striker also dismissed claims that Chelsea would be badly damaged by the departure of star man Eden Hazard, who joined Real Madrid this summer] Even if we lost important players, I feel this squad is very strong in both quality and quantity. I have no worries at all. I think we have a super mentality, we are all pointing in the same direction, the same target and I’m pretty sure we can do good things this year. But it’s sad to start the season like that, it’s been quite tough, but we need to recover now and keep our heads up

[The France international has high expectations this season and wants to be a big part of Lampard’s squad] The most important thing has been to keep the confidence high and obviously being fearless, playing with freedom and that’s what we’ve done. We’ve been very strong. I think we can build good things from here. I feel very good right now. I still need more game time because I only played a few 45 minutes in the friendlies, that’s why after 70 minutes I said to the coach: ‘I feel like I can’t help the team anymore’. So, it was better that the boys came on and finished the job. I feel very good at Chelsea and I’m very happy and I’m sad after the results, but I have high expectations for the season because we have a very good squad

[Olivier Giroud has warned Tammy Abraham that Chelsea’s striking berth is not wrapped up. Quizzed on whether he now expects to be stuck on the sidelines] Obviously not! I have goals in my head. I’m here to help the new generation, but beware, the time for retirement has not come. I’m still hungry and have a lot of ambition. I don’t want to be Chelsea’s No. 2 striker, for sure. Just because I’m here as an older brother for young people, it doesn’t mean I’m out on the sidelines

[Giroud added on his selection battle] The competition is open and healthy with young Tammy Abraham, which was not the case last year. The boy has taken his chance, he scores and if he works well, I will have to try and put pressure on him. There is no reason for me to worry about the rest of the season

[It was suggested over the summer that Giroud could head out of Chelsea] I can go to China to get a big cheque! On a more serious note, ending my career in the United States fits me well. For my family, as my children continue to speak English, it would be less exotic and equally rewarding. Language is important. Living in the US is also special. Why not two years from now take on a last challenge? Or maybe elsewhere! There may be a great challenge in Europe

[Olivier Giroud admits his situation at Chelsea is not ideal] I’m fine, I’ve had hard times. Now it’s not the ideal situation. At this moment, little Tammy is walking on water. Listen, it’s hard to drop a striker when he’s successful. I am patient. I work in training. You have to keep a good state of mind. We have a lot of games to play. Last week, I missed all three games because of a dirty virus that tied me to the bed. Now I feel much better. The coach preferred to start Tammy [against Lille]. It’s good for the team. It makes us want to continue working and shaking up the competition

2019 10 08 Retrieve

[Olivier Giroud is yet to discuss his lack of game time with Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, with the World Cup winner prepared to offer a helping hand to Tammy Abraham for now] There are two reactions to being left out of the side. There is one where you put your head down, start complaining that you’re not playing. The other way is you transform that frustration over not playing into a positive energy. You need to maintain a good feeling to bounce back, to show your character. That is what I try to do at training every day. I’m a competitor. It takes a lot more to get me down. I will always fight to get back in the team. Have I spoken to Frank? No, not yet. I have nothing to say, because Tammy is doing so well. It is difficult to get a striker out of the team when he is being this successful and scoring regularly. I just have to stay focused, to keep concentrating on what I have to do in training and show I’m ready for whenever the manager needs me

[Giroud says he has been offering words of advice to Abraham] It’s true that competition at Chelsea is tough. But it’s good for the team, for us to be there to step up. It helps to have players like myself that want to be back in the team and never give up. Tammy is doing very well now. He is very efficient up front. What can I say? I’m just waiting for my turn. I work hard in training with a good spirit. If the manager needs me, I will look to be efficient.

Have I been helping Tammy? Yes. He is still a young player and is having a good moment. I am happy for him. He reminds me of myself when I was starting out in my career. He is precocious. He is doing very well at a young age. I am delighted for him. If I can help him to carry on, I will. But I will try to push him, again and again, not to be in the comfort zone. I will always try to score a lot. There is a good competition between us.

[Chelsea striker Giroud unhappy at fringe role but won’t criticise Lampard] Accept it? No, I do not accept it. You do not have to be fatalistic in certain situations. I have always been respectful and humble. Even if I do not agree with the coach, I do not criticise him. But in myself, I cannot accept it because I know what I’m worth on a pitch. Last year, when I felt I deserved to play, I asked the coach [Sarri] for explanations

[Tammy Abraham has become Chelsea’s preferred central striker this term, with Giroud waiting for a chance of a run in the team] It was not easy to leave Arsenal for Chelsea two years ago. I loved Arsenal. But it was a progression because Chelsea is the English club that has won the most titles, with Manchester City, in the last 10 years. I had competitors in attack - Alvaro Morata, Higuain - who ended up leaving. I won in the end: I played the final of the FA Cup in 2018 and the Europa League final in 2019. Once again, I’m starting the season in difficulty, but as my brother said, I have always grown in the face of adversity. Although I would like there to be less of it

[Giroud admits he could leave Chelsea if ‘forced to make a choice’] I’m going to fight for my place in Chelsea. The coach knows it. And we will make the decision in January. If I want to leave Chelsea? Not necessarily. But if I need to make a choice… I have some beautiful years in front of me. I’m 33, I still have legs and a good healthy lifestyle and I feel good physically. I want to have fun and want to play more games. Chelsea is my priority, but if in the end I’m forced to make a choice, I will do it as when I left Arsenal

[Lampard] will almost certainly watch the matches. In any case, I am going back to Chelsea pumped up

[The goal was Giroud’s 38th international finish, and it was a meaningful one for the striker, who is looking to build on a strong international performance while using that momentum to regain a spot at the club level] For different reasons, I have played little since the last national team break. Of course it feels good to make the difference

[Giroud certainly didn’t duck the issue when questioned about his future at club level during the international break] I still have some beautiful years in front of me. Chelsea is my priority, but if in the end I’m forced to make a choice, I will do it, just like when I left Arsenal

[Olivier Giroud have cited a half-time team talk from Didier Deschamps as the key to France’s 2-1 win over Moldova] I could have, we could have scored well before the penalty. We did not start as we should have done. We had a lack of aggression in everything we did, in the duels, in the decision-making and in the desire to do things right. In the second half there was much more intensity and accuracy with much better intentions so we created many opportunities. You have to know how to have solutions, that’s what the coach stressed at half-time and he wanted more movement from our forwards. We tried hard to listen to him and offer more solutions in this area of our game and we created many opportunities

[Giroud seeking January exit as he targets France Euro 2020 squad] It will be difficult to stay at Chelsea. I’m going to have a chat with the coach. Chances are, there will be a change because I don’t have enough time to express myself on the pitch. For the moment, I am a Chelsea player. I still have some games to play here before the transfer window opens [on January 1]. Then we will sit around a table and find the best decision for me. France is one of the possible solutions

[He has still featured regularly for Didier Deschamps’ World Cup-winning France side - but his lack of playing time for his club has left him open to criticism] There will always be critics. This is mainly due to the fact that I am getting less playing time at club level. There is a big expectation around me with the national team. [Euro 2020 is] a priority. It may me one of my last challenges in blue. I have my sights set on the Euros. I am focused on this goal and I will do everything I can to get there

[Giroud insists he’s ‘100% focused’ on Chelsea amid transfer rumours] I’m a Chelsea player so now I need to move on and look forward. I want to give everything for the team and it’s a personal target for me to play as much as I can to play the Euros with my country. Right now, I’m 100% focused on Chelsea’s targets and I want to keep fighting to come back on to the team sheet and the scoresheet. Every single game is a big opportunity for me to show my desire to do that

After two months not playing, I felt very good on the pitch with a lot of energy and determination. I scored a nice goal from a nice cross and I just tried to stay behind [Harry] Maguire but I was half a foot offside. It’s very frustrating because it could have changed the game but obviously we made two mistakes on two goals and we need to improve on that

We just need to improve on the small details because that’s where you can win or lose big games. Now we need to step up and improve on those small margins - they’re huge at the highest level. It was a tough result so we need to think about it because it’s another big game for us on Saturday against Tottenham

[Olivier Giroud was delighted to mark his return to the Chelsea XI with a goal] Wow, yeah, it was a good feeling for me, a good moment. I’m so happy for the team, to help the team to win this game today. It had been three months I didn’t start, so it’s a special day for me and for all of us.

[Giroud sends message to Lampard that he can be Chelsea’s main striker] Yes, yes I do. I think he can be [the answer] without a doubt. With the way he played today. If we need to adapt slightly, Tammy has been fantastic this season and he has played the majority of the games. He has got himself in the England squad, scored regular goals, got himself to the top of the charts. He has had a more difficult time recently with his injury, but yes, you understand the attributes of them both. Different games and different teams come up against you and you can use the different attributes of them. I am just delighted that Oli comes in and gets his goal. So that’s positive, I need that competition

[Giroud: Tottenham win a turning point for Chelsea] It was a very important game for us. I want to talk about the team spirit. We showed great character. We knew it was maybe a kind of turning point because we lost a bit of confidence at home. It was nice to bounce back and get this hard win against a rival

[World Cup winner retained a positive outlook after his contribution] It’s been three months in the stands, so it was a special day for me and for all of us.

[Giroud ready for ‘almost impossible’ task to knock out Bayern] It’s going to be almost impossible. We need to go there with belief, to believe that we can score. You never know. They scored three here, so we need to go there and score three and not concede. I’m not joking. So, we have nothing to lose, we’re going to play our game maybe with more freedom. They are a team with a lot of experience. When I was on the pitch I was thinking ‘everything is so smooth’.

They have played together for a very long time, they have a very good understanding with each other. They played well and you have to recognise this. But you don’t have to keep your head down and we’ve got to bounce back as soon as possible. They were the better team so it’s very deflating obviously. We need to move on and focus on what’s next now, even if in the first half we could have done better because we had opportunities to score. But when you concede two goals in four minutes it’s very hard to come back psychologically, to turn the game. They played a very good game, and they are a very good team.

I said to Serge Gnabry I’m happy for him because I played with him at Arsenal when he was 16. But the way he’s improved is amazing. He’s doing so well now. I’m happy for him because he’s a good guy and he deserves it. For us now though, we need to bounce back on Saturday

[Giroud makes Chelsea U-turn & is open to signing new deal] Yes, of course. There are a few weeks [to go], games to win and maybe another trophy. And after I think I have two, three nice seasons in front of me. It’s not the time to talk about contracts. But one more time I will take a decision when it comes. It’s behind me. It was a tough month for me. I just spoke with the manager and I believed what he said, that I would get my chance and he has given me my chance. I have tried to give his confidence back on the pitch. I do my job the best that I can and I’m very happy to be back in the team. Of course, my confidence is better. The transfer window is behind me. I’m a Chelsea player, I’m happy here again and that’s the most important thing

My confidence is getting higher and higher because I am playing more games. I don’t know how long Tammy will be out for to be honest. When he comes back I will need him to be ready and then we can have good competition again, which will be good for the team. Everybody needs to be ready, to be good psychologically, to give everything for the team. I think that’s what we did against Liverpool

I just told him I was happy for him (after Kepa’s performance in the win over Liverpool in the FA Cup). He deserved to be man of the match because he saved us a few times. There is fair competition between him and Willy, they are both training very hard. His situation was the same as mine - when you get the chance to be competitive and decisive for the team you have to take it. He is a tough man, but very quiet. He hasn’t said anything [about being dropped]. We can understand his disappointment, but you have to respect the manager’s decisions. You have to work hard to get back into the team. He has done well against Liverpool and it’s a good answer. I’m always talking about the ‘carre vert ‘, like we say in France, that’s the reality of the pitch. Carre is square and vert is green. This is the reality of our job. You just need to be ready when the manager puts us on the pitch. I’m happy for us

[Giroud: I did everything to try leave Chelsea in January] Even I saw myself elsewhere to be honest. I went through six complicated months. That’s why I tried to leave in January. I did everything [to leave]. In the end, with the circumstances, Chelsea did not want to let me go. The crucial condition for my departure was to have a replacement. The most interesting club for me was Inter. The problem is that it dragged on. In the end, and even if Lazio were there towards the end and Tottenham too, it was no longer a question of where I was going to leave but could I leave. There was nothing to do. I was stuck. I knew that anyway I shouldn’t start going on strike or wreak havoc in the locker room. First of all, because it is not me and also because I knew there was a good chance that I would stay at Chelsea. That’s why I stayed flawless and professional until the end. There were two reactions: either I mope around myself or I fight for my place. That’s what I did. And the coach who promised me more opportunities to play kept his word and I took my chance

Yes, president Jean-Michel Aulas called me. I got him on the phone. He expressed his interest to me and I simply told him that I was flattered by Lyon’s interest but that my priority was focused on Inter

Yes, [France coach] Didier Deschamps spoke to me in October. Seeing that it was not going well for me, he warned me. He told me about MLS and that it was not an option to be able to play at Euro 2020. Let’s see if we play and if the Euros take place. As long as the coach thinks I can bring something, I will respond. If I’m not there, of course it would be a disappointment, but I have a lot of hope and I plan to do the job with Chelsea to be selected

[Goalscorer Giroud praised his young team-mate, stating that Gilmour is showing enviable maturity for such a young player] He’s done very well again today. For a young player of 18 years old he’s got great maturity and also listens to advice

[Tottenham is also a possible destination for Olivier Giroud] Even I saw myself elsewhere, to be honest. There were two reactions: either I mope around or I fight for my place. That’s what I did. And the coach who promised me more opportunities to play kept his word and I took my chance

[Chelsea’s Giroud opens up on January offers] Everyone knows that the sporting project of Inter was the most interesting for me. Lazio and Tottenham also looked for me. At one point, it was a question of where I wanted to go to play. I spoke to Conte on the phone

[When asked whether he would like to remain in west London] Yes. Yes. Of course. There are a few months to go, games to win and maybe another trophy, and after, you know, I think I have two [or] three nice seasons in front of me. It’s not the time to talk about contracts and everything but I will make a decision when it comes

[Chelsea begin talks with Giroud over new contract] Yes, of course. There are a few weeks [to go in the season], games to win and maybe another trophy.

[Giroud still aiming to make history with France despite Euro 2020 delay blow] I am at 97 caps and I hoped to reach the 100 mark at the March and June friendlies. This is only a postponement. Regarding the number of goals, I am only two off Michel Platini, it is also clearly an objective

[Chelsea renew Giroud’s contract until 2021] Prior to the pause in the season due to the pandemic, Giroud had again emphasized his importance to the squad by taking on the responsibility of leading the attack with Tammy Abraham injured, and making a significant contribution, not least when he expertly found the net to open the scoring in a win against Tottenham in February, and helped to knock Liverpool out of the FA Cup the following month

[Giroud reveals Europa League final motivation to prove Gunners wrong] That final against Arsenal was obviously very special for me emotionally. When I saw that we were going to face Arsenal in the final, I knew it was going to be special. On top of that, it was only a year after I left. I have quite a lot of friends over there, people who work in the club’s offices. That was extra motivation for me and I knew that it was going to be a high-pressure match. You definitely prepare for the match in a special way, in a different way, because you know that they know you inside out, and they know that I know them well too. You have to plan for the match but not play the match before it’s happened. You have to think ahead. I thought that if I had a one-on-one with Petr Cech, who knows me really well, or a penalty, I would have to shoot there and not somewhere else. I knew that he knew me really well. I was also going to play against my friend Laurent Koscielny, who has also known me inside-out for years because we started together at Tours in 2008. It was a very special moment but it was like extra motivation for me because I wanted to show them that I still had some energy in me and some good years left in me. I scored, I got an assist and I won the penalty so quite a lot of good things happened there for me because I was involved in three goals out of the four that we scored. It was like in a dream because I couldn’t have imagined that it would go so well, so perfectly for us. I wanted to win things at Chelsea - that’s why I was even more motivated that night - but winning against your old club like that […]

After the match, I went to the changing room holding the ball and someone said ‘perfect hat-trick!’. I didn’t know that idiom but I had scored with my right foot, with my left foot and with a header so it was a nice thing to say. I kept the ball and everyone congratulated me for it so it was a great performance and a great memory. It was incredible for a striker like me to score a hat-trick against Dynamo Kyiv but you haven’t won anything at that stage and the whole point of the competition is to win the trophy at the end. It’s all about winning. That final was even more special because it was against Arsenal, and I went out there to win the trophy. That’s how you can leave your mark on history, by writing your name in the record books

[Giroud reveals pains of training return ahead of Premier League restart] We resumed training [on Tuesday 19 May]. It really feels good to be back on the pitch, to get to see team-mates again and to simply be playing football. I’d really missed it. It’s very unusual, as we work in groups of five. We need to maintain a two-metre minimum social distance between each other, meaning no contact. We’re tested [for Covid-19] twice a week. We can’t access the changing room. We can’t shower either, meaning you have to get changed before stepping into your car in order to keep it clean. It’s very hot at the moment too - I’m not complaining about that, but it means we sweat a lot! During lockdown, Chelsea would send us programmes to follow to keep fit. We had exercises to do every day. I’m lucky enough to live right next to a great park and I went there to run almost every day. Towards the end of this period, the whole team video-called and we did circuit training. I did it at home in the playroom alongside my children. I took a picture of us - it was nice. However, nothing replaces being on the pitch. Almost all my team-mates got blisters after resuming training.

[Giroud explains decision to extend Chelsea stay] I simply seized my opportunity and I repaid the faith that the manager had shown in me. That’s why the club ultimately offered me the chance to continue my time at Chelsea and I accepted immediately because I like it here. I want to keep winning trophies and I want to continue to show the manager that he can count on me. Plus, with the whole coronavirus lockdown situation, I didn’t really feel comfortable with the idea of moving abroad and uprooting my family. I think a lot about our quality of life and we have a great setup here. I think a lot about my family now

[Giroud went on the reveal just how close he came to leaving Chelsea in the winter transfer window] I was supposed to leave in the January transfer window because I wasn’t playing much and I needed more game time to make the France squad for Euro 2020. I very nearly left the club but I really think that God wanted me to stay at Chelsea. The manager told me that he couldn’t let me leave because he didn’t have anyone to replace me. Everyone knows what happened so I won’t go back over it but the coach spoke to me privately and told me that he’d give more games. He kept his word and what then mattered to me was proving to him that he could count on me when I was called upon

[Olivier Giroud has revealed that he was close to sealing a move to Glasgow giants Celtic earlier in his career] I almost went to Scotland. It would have been a great showcase for the Premier League. And there was the atmosphere of Celtic Park… But I don’t regret my choice. What tipped the scales in favour of Montpellier was my desire to play Ligue 1 before going abroad. My entourage gave me this option and I got a phone call from Louis [Nicollin, Montpellier president at the time] who told me: ‘What the f*ck are you going to do in Scotland?’ He was good, I felt sincerity in his words

[Frenchman recently extended his Blues contract and, while he would be open to playing for Montpellier again at some point before retiring, he is in no rush to return to France] I don’t want to give false hopes. I hope to play at the highest level - the Champions League and European competitions - for at least another year or two. We’ll see what happens afterwards, what proposals are offered to me

[Olivier Giroud says Chelsea signing Werner gives him motivation] He [Werner] is going to be a very good signing and will provide more motivation for strikers. I’ve been the super sub but I want to make the gaffer’s choices even more difficult

[N’Golo Kante was one of the players to voice their concerns about football returning] I believe, like all the player,s he had at-risk people in his entourage, so that’s why he didn’t feel very comfortable. I respect that. We are very glad to have him back and I think he will definitely be here for the first game. He is looking good.

Panic is not for me. Time is not playing on my side, I’m almost 34, but my body is ready to play a few more years at the best level. We are World Cup champions and we want to do like our brothers from France 98 and win the European Championship
