[Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes the club should sell Christian Eriksen now rather than risk losing him on a free transfer] The chairman has obviously put a price tag on his head [and] they have to get value for money. If he’s not going to sign a contract then they have to cash in

I’d be surprised if they do keep hold of him due to the fact that he still hasn’t signed his contract that he has been offered. He’s made noises that he is ready for a new challenge. He’s been at the club now for six years now and the fact that he hasn’t signed a new contract going into his final year I think it does have an effect on the team. I think it does have an effect on the players around him and I think genuinely if he did want to stay and his heart was there he would have signed it by now

The problem you have got is that the player clearly wants a new challenge, and if the window closes and he’s still at your club, you have then got to motivate that player until his new challenge arrives either at the end of the season, or in January, or whenever that may be. As a manager, you’ve then got a player who didn’t want to be around, so you’ve got to motivate that player and get him back on board and buy into what you are doing for the next 12 months

[Paul Robinson says Harry Kane may have seen a move from Tottenham to Manchester United mooted] It depends what level of player you are. Manchester United are constantly linked to Harry Kane. There is always a link to Manchester United with Harry Kane. I can’t see now why Harry Kane would want to change Tottenham for Manchester United. I think he would get more success at Tottenham than he would in the current Manchester United side. If there’s an opportunity for foreign players to go to Manchester United, who want to play in this country, of course it’s going to be an attraction. It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world, historically, yes they’re in a position of transition at the moment and things do need to change. Will that change? We’ll see. I think this season they’re a long way off where they should be and where they need to be

[Paul Robinson believes Jordan Pickford is still Gareth Southgate’s number one keeper, despite acknowledging his drop-off in performance] Yes, he is [England’s No.1], definitely. I don’t think he’s playing the best that he’s ever played, clearly I don’t think he’s at the top of his game because he’s set himself such a high bar. I think he made an error in the Merseyside derby in November, and I think that impacted him a little bit. It was the first time he’d made a high-profile error, where people have actually started scrutinising him and are now watching him

A goalkeeper is all about confidence. When you make a mistake, or you have criticism levelled at you, you’ve got to be very strong. Little things, like someone saying something when you go behind the goal to pick up the ball, it makes you question yourself. I genuinely think he’s England’s No.1 goalkeeper at the moment. Is he the best in the Premier League? There are probably a few goalkeepers in better form than him at the moment. But is he England’s No.1 for the next internationals? Absolutely, yes he is. He’s earned that right

[Paul Robinson says If Real Madrid are still interested in Christian Eriksen then a swap involving Gareth Bale would be the perfect deal for Tottenham] I think they should try to get him if they can. I think if Eriksen is going to go to Real Madrid, I think that would be the perfect deal for Tottenham and Tottenham supporters. He’ll be the perfect fit for Mourinho, he’d give the whole place a lift, rather than have Eriksen who clearly doesn’t want to be there. He’s sulking and he’s not happy, it looks like he is going to want to leave. To get someone of Bale’s quality in, as part of a deal, if that’s possible then it’ll be great

[Paul Robinson says Jose Mourinho is the perfect manager to get the best out of Gareth Bale] I’d love to see it happen. I think if anyone can get the best out of Gareth Bale, it’s Jose Mourinho. Losing Christian Eriksen, losing that little bit of creativity, that edge he’s brought to the side in the last however many seasons that he’s been there, I think a signing like Gareth Bale would really ignite the place again. It would really give the fans a huge boost

I think the whole Christian Eriksen episode has been handled quite badly from start to finish, to be honest. To get to this point with Christian Eriksen still hanging around, not performing, playing a bit-part, not having a lot of money for him - it’s probably one thing they have dropped the ball on. I don’t think Mourinho can criticise the timing because it’s always been coming

[Former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson says Willian would be great but Spurs must sell first] It would be a good signing. I think it is a player who Mourinho knows well. I would be surprised if Chelsea let him go because he is a top player. Spurs have a lot of attacking midfield players and he fits that bill as to what they have already got. There would have to be a few outgoings but that is a manager putting his stamp on a squad. Implementing the changes and getting the players he wants. Mourinho was brought in for a reason and Spurs will have to let him do that to an extent. I would be very surprised if he [Willian] came in as another, there would have to be outgoings first to make room. He is very similar to what they have already got.

[Paul Robinson says Tottenham should be looking to move players out in the next transfer window to make room for world-class Philippe Coutinho] I can see Philippe Coutinho [joining] a top-six Premier League side - Tottenham included. You saw how good he was at Liverpool and when he went to Barca you expected big things from him but it did not work out and he got moved onto Bayern. The Premier League may be a realistic option for him. Whether it is Liverpool or Tottenham he would be an asset anywhere he went. Listen, if you can get a player like that then you have decisions to make on what you have in your squad. What does Jose want to work with? If you get the option to sign a world-class player like Coutinho you look at the squad and you offload in other areas to allow a player of that quality into your squad.

[Paul Robinson says Tottenham cannot afford a repeat of their Gareth Bale saga if a big-money move is to be sanctioned for Harry Kane] It is difficult when a player of that magnitude and that quality says that they want to leave a club, it’s just like with Gareth Bale. But the deal has to be right. In the past, Daniel Levy has made sure the deals are right and he has got excellent value for players. The deal would have to be right for everybody and it would have to be a very large sum of money that could be reinvested into the squad. The squad needs strengthening. To take Harry out of the equation you would need to reinvest the money very sensibly. You only have to look at Gareth Bale. There will be an interesting conversation with Spurs next season if they are not challenging on any front midway through

[Paul Robinson says Spurs need Umtiti if Vertonghen is leaving] Umtiti is what they need. Vertonghen has not been himself. Whether it has been the contract, but it looks like he has always had it in mind to leave. He has looked disheartened at times, you could see it in his body language. He has not been himself. Someone like Umtiti, who is only 26, would be ideal if Vertonghen is leaving. If he does leave it is a position they will have to look at. I suspect they will strengthen with more than one but Umtiti fits the bill. He would be a great signing

[Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson says the club can still bring Philippe Coutinho to London] The market will take a hit but there will still be movement of players. I can still see the Coutinho deal being done. Bayern have not taken the option and he has clearly not been part of Barcelona’s plans for a while now and I can see a move back to the Premier League happening. I think he would be a great signing for Spurs. I do not think he has settled since leaving the country and he is clearly a player that suits the Premier League. The league is stronger with him in it, certainly

[Paul Robinson says Joshua King has enough quality to fit into one of the top-four squads] I played with Josh King at Blackburn and he has developed hugely as a player. He came as a wide player after a very good academy upbringing. He was a talented player but he was not the finished article. I think he has got better and he now prefers to play down the middle. He has grown in stature and increased his physique. His speed used to be his real asset but now he has got end product as well. I can certainly see him fitting into one of the top four’s squads. If Harry Kane is fit, he plays, but he has not played a full season in years. He (King) is guaranteed games even if he is not a starter

[According to Paul Robinson, Jose Mourinho must manage Harry Kane’s return to the pitch carefully who says the Tottenham striker can’t be expected to play three games a week] You have to worry whether Harry Kane can play two or three games a week, whether he can play 90 minutes on a Saturday and then have to wait again for the following Saturday to play another 90 minutes. It will be all about how Jose (Mourinho) manages the situation because you can’t expect a player whose been out after that length of time to be able to come back and play three games a week with all the demands Premier League football puts on you. Managers are going to have to be very aware and conscious as to how they man-manage their players fitness, injuries and squad rotation. Squad rotation, in particular, is going to be huge in the next three or four weeks with the amount of games - training is going to be minimal so it’s going to be all about preparation and recovery

[Leeds United promoted to Premier League] It has been long awaited and very long overdue. When I played that last game in 2004 - 16 years ago almost to the day - you never envisaged that Leeds United would be out of the top flight for so long and even drop into the third tier of English football. It is a fantastic achievement from what Marcelo Bielsa inherited two-and-a-half years ago. A team that [then] finished 13th in the Championship to now automatic promotion to the Premier League. A one-club city

[Paul Robinson on Leeds’s Premier League promotion] It’s been a long, long time. It was a very special day yesterday for everyone involved with the club. I think the term ‘sleeping giant’ is far too overused when it comes to football clubs, but I think it’s very, very apt when you’re talking about a club of Leeds’ size
