[Raheem Sterling shows his coach’s age, with the goal having been scored more than 13 years before the young England international was born] I didn’t understand what the gaffer said when I was first told about it. But then I typed both names into Google, so now I know

[Raheem Sterling on why he shaved his head] I wasn’t scoring for a few games, so I thought, ‘Let me just change it up’, and I’ve scored. As soon as I cut this I was ill for a few days, but now I’m sticking with it for a while

[Raheem Sterling on rejecting Liverpool’s contact offer] I don’t want to be perceived as a money-grabbing 20-year-old. It is about winning trophies throughout your career – I don’t talk about how many cars I will drive or how many houses I’ve got

[Raheem Sterling recalls making his World Cup debut against Italy at Brazil 2014 in Manaus] I remember the game like it was no time ago. It was a massive game for me – I just thought to myself: ‘If only my dad was here’. I wish my dad could have been there but he passed away. So to myself I said: ‘I need to play well for him because he’s never been at a football match. He’s never seen me on a football pitch’. So I wanted to win that game and we never won in the end but it was an alright performance from me. I was just so determined to do well

[Raheem Sterling talking after ending his England goal drought] It was beautiful feeling. I put a lot of pressure on myself to get in the box and score goals and it’s my position to score goals so I need to keep going. It meant a lot, it’s been three years without scoring so it meant a lot

[Raheem Sterling speaks about the perception of him in the media] From the very start of my career, there has been a perception of a flashy kid from London: loves cars, loves the flashy lifestyle. I’m not saying I’m a saint or anything, but that is the complete opposite of who I am. [Fans] do not know me. They will define me by what they read about me; that is how they will treat me. When people are making the public believe you are a character you aren’t, that is hurtful, and it is degrading

[Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling has admitted that he initially found it hard to return to Liverpool, but on Sunday he is ready to help Pep Guardiola’s side to victory on Merseyside] At first it was hard going back but now it’s time to go there and produce. It was weird at first, to see yourself in a different shirt and, against a club that’s done so much for you. It’s also emotional. Now I’ve got past that stage. It’s gone. It was a little thing but I’m now fully focused and fully ready

[Sterling, who has seven goals and an assist in 10 Premier League outings this season, maintains confidence in their ability to record just a second Anfield victory since 1981] When we operate to our best as a team, attacking and defensively, then we are frightening. We just need to go there and play confidently. We know they are a good team but we are also a good team and we will give it everything. I see this as a game where you need to simply focus on your individual performances first and the collective performances. The rest will take care of itself. I think we have had difficult times there as a team but last season we went there and could have got the win at the end

Everyone knows that I am not that way inclined and more to the point … both Joe and I have had words and figured things out and moved on. are in a sport where emotions run high and I am man enough to admit when emotions got the better of me. We move [sic] this is why we play this sport because of our love for it – me and @joegomez5 are good we both understand it was a 5-10 second thing it’s done we move forward and not make this bigger than it is. [Raheem Sterling slams England fans for Joe Gomez boos] To all the England fans, I wanted to leave things at it was but tonight I have to speak again. It was hard for me to see my team-mate get booed for something that was my fault. Joe hasn’t done anything wrong and for me to see someone who keeps his head down and works hard especially after a difficult week for him to be booed when he came on tonight was wrong. I’ve taken full responsibility and accepted the consequence. I felt as though I had to say this, get home safe everyone

[England boss Gareth Southgate also registered his unhappiness with the treatment of Gomez] No England players should ever be booed when they are wearing the shirt, ever. I don’t get it. So all of the players are particularly disappointed with that

[Sterling reflects on ‘wake-up call’ as he targets end to goal drought against Man Utd] It was a subject I kept hearing after games; that I don’t score enough and I’m not good enough in front of goal. When I first came onto the scene I wanted to show I had ability and that I was a good player. But I was never trying to be greedy in trying to win matches by myself. It was a wake-up call hearing all the critics saying he can’t score goals, so I thought I’d show them that I can. It’s something I started to work on and have belief. It’s a shift in mentality: in the dressing room I’d always think: ‘What am I going to do to the right back today - shall I nutmeg him? Maybe a step over?’. But now it’s a straight mentality of trying to score and where a goal can come from

[Third-placed City face an immense challenge in retaining their Premier League title] It’s one that none of us at the club are happy with but it’s happening now. We’ve got to keep focused and keep the belief - even if the manager doesn’t say it. It’s a long season and they are far ahead, credit to them, but it’s the Premier League. That’s why we’ve got to be prepared and ready as there’s some tricky games ahead for them. We’ve just got to keep focused and win our games to be with a shout if they do slip up

[When asked if he is bothered by his dismal record against United] No and yes. Firstly, no, because I didn’t take scoring seriously, but yes because now I do. To see that stat that I haven’t scored in 16 games against them, it’s a wake-up call. I won’t put pressure on myself and will play my game looking with an eye to score. I’ll be taking a lot more shots than I usually do

[Sterling impressed by Man Utd’s fighting spirit with Man City wary of Rashford threat] The last couple of games I have seen them they have been very intense. They’re fighting for their manager, their team and their football club and that’s really great to see when squad players fight for the shirt, and that’s what they’re doing. Their front line is their biggest threat. They’ve got Marcus [Rashford] up front who’s a real hazard in and around the box

[Sterling is still yet to find the net in any game against Manchester United] I look forward to changing that stat this weekend. We all know who Manchester United are as a club. They’re going through a transitional period but they play some great football at times. They’ve played against the big teams this season and got results out of those games so we know it will always be a difficult game and this time is no different

[Raheem Sterling: Real Madrid a fantastic club but I’m happy at Manchester City] It’s one of those things. Right now I’m at City and I’m really happy. But I say Real Madrid are a fantastic club. When you see the white shirt you know exactly what the club stands for - it’s massive. But, at the same time, I have a contract with City now and I have to respect this. But it’s a fantastic club

[Rumours of their interest], it’s something that you see all the time, but I’m a City player and I’m enjoying it at the moment, even if things haven’t gone quite planned in the league. We now have a massive opportunity in the Champions League. I keep saying Real Madrid is a fantastic club, there’s lovely weather, but I keep saying that I am quite happy at City

[Speculation has grown over the future of a City squad without Champions League football but Sterling, whose contract runs until 2023, appears hopeful the appeal can be successful] It’s something we don’t know much about yet because it’s something that has not been confirmed. The club has a long way to go and we just have to wait and see what happens, but I have full confidence in the club

[Sterling says Man City don’t get same respect as Liverpool due to lack of individual awards] Especially in the last year where we have won the domestic quadruple including the league, to not have a player winning PFA Player of the Year kind of speaks for itself really. The award was given to a Liverpool player [Virgil van Dijk] who had a fantastic season but I look at previous seasons as well when Yaya Toure scored 20 goals from midfield and he didn’t win Player of the Year. Also, Sergio Aguero has been at the club for more than seven years and has scored unbelievable goals during this time, yet none of City’s players have won it

It is impossible to win the league four times and none of the players were Player of the Year. So, this year Liverpool win the league and a Liverpool player will win the Player of the Year for sure. We won the league four times and we were not treated with the same respect. The first year we won the league [under Guardiola], Kevin De Bruyne was unbelievable and they gave it to another player [N’Golo Kante]. Every year we win a major trophy and it’s given to an opposition player. It’s that sort of thing that doesn’t depend on us, but we keep going

[Sterling addresses 11-game goal drought] It happens. Before January I was at 20 goals, after I haven’t scored yet but I’m five goals away from beating my record from last season and so confident I will be able to do it. At first I wasn’t taking in that I hadn’t scored against [United] and then the last two years I have known the record and have started to think about it too much. Now I am not thinking about it. I know I am going to get a moment

The Premier League, the bread and butter, fair play to Liverpool - they have been better than everyone. I wouldn’t say we gave up - we weren’t consistent enough for long enough. We didn’t purposely give away the title.

It is always nice to get a trophy. Now it is the business end and we have a lot to fight for. We are one trophy down and confident we can go to do major things this season. It is just as special as always. If you are not winning trophies you will finish the season very disappointed. Our motivation is to win every trophy we are involved in. We can finish in the top four and win the other two cups. It could still be a successful season

[Manchester City ace Raheem Sterling has warned Liverpool to be ready for a massive reaction from the Etihad side next season] Liverpool have been far better than everyone in the league and have been consistent, that is why they are top of the league. We have been slacking, we haven’t kept our standards that we know we can keep to. From now to the end of the season we have to try and win every single game and whatever happens, happens. It’s in Liverpool’s hands and that’s it. We won the league twice in a row. Liverpool are winning, leading at this point in time. But I’m pretty sure that come the end of the season our boys will go away and come back again very hurt if they do pick up the league, and we will be up and running for next season for sure. It will be a massive reaction

A really important moment in our season was when Gabriel Jesus scored the winner against Tottenham and it got disallowed by VAR. Little things like that take their toll. We scored a lot of late goals in our first title-winning season, it started in the third game against Bournemouth where I scored the winner, and it built momentum through the season and kept happening. We had the belief that we could win games because we had done it so many times, we didn’t rush things because we knew we could win, and we knew we could get a chance. We haven’t been at our best this season for sure, but there have been little things that haven’t quite been the slice of luck

But for sure when I do finish football and settle somewhere I’ll have all the shirts - hopefully many shirts to choose from - and pick my favourites that I played against and do a room of trophies and football shirts. [Sterling vows to step up to lethal level with Manchester City] I’d say probably about 15 goals off where I want to be, so those are the targets: to try to create good numbers, but not just numbers to have numbers. At the end of the day you want to have trophies to back up that season because 10 years from now, you can score a lot of goals, but if I can’t look back at those goals being important for my team and having a great value then those goals were pointless. It’s one of those - [you want] to try to contribute as much as I can but at the end of the season have medals to show for it

We’ve still got another level to go. In my time at City, the most important thing I’ve learned is the value of winning. Before, if I won a game it was good, but if I lost a game you’re disappointed but it doesn’t burn you as much. But if we lose one game in 15 at Manchester City you wouldn’t like to be in the dressing room - it’s like the worst thing in the world’s happened. That’s the biggest thing I’ve learned since I’ve been there and it’s something that I definitely carry with me, not just in football but in anything I do - that winning mentality.

That’s the number one thing I’ve taken from him

[Man City star Sterling admits Gerrard was the first player he was in awe of] Probably when I was 17, 18, 19 I was in awe [of great players]. [When I was young, I looked up to] Ronaldinho. If you check my history on YouTube, I think I’ve watched every single clip of his playing career. He was a player that I used to go in the garden to try to recreate but it could never be done. I tried it to the best of my ability, but he was something special. Steven Gerrard was the first person I felt a bit in awe of – I couldn’t believe I was standing in front of him but not now, it’s just strictly business: ‘I need to beat your team’ and it’s as simple as that. I think they are great players and everything but I don’t really dwell on that anymore.

[Social distancing rules have been introduced in a bid to contain the spread of the illness] It’s been weird but we are well – the family is well, the kids are well. It’s another opportunity to be with the family. A lot of time, we’re on the road so it gives us an opportunity to be there and take the leading role in the house and give the missus a rest for once! At first, I didn’t have a structure in place when we first started because I didn’t know what was going on exactly but I have to be ready and keep myself fit, while at the same time having the afternoon off to have some time learning and studying with the kids, trying to balance it out in the right way. Everyone is well

[Raheem Sterling says he is concerned about what the worst outcome could be if the Premier League returns before it is safe] The moment we do go back it just needs to be a moment where it’s not just for footballing reasons, it’s safe for not just us footballers but the whole medical staff, referees. I don’t know how that’s going to work, but I feel like once that side of the people’s safety and the players’ safety is secured and their wellbeing is looked after then that’s the right time to go back in. Until then, I’m… how can I say… not scared but reserved and thinking what the worst outcome could be. At the same time I’m looking forward to it and I really want to get back but hopefully it will all be well when we do get back

[Manchester City star Sterling in talks over ambassador role to combat racism] Even after I said what I said I have seen a lot more players, voicing their opinions and shedding light on the situation. It’s one of those where we have to be all together, it should not be an individual thing to do. This is something we have to do as a collective to get our voices heard. Since then we have been pushing. I do have a few more meetings with the league about an ambassador role. It’s one of those where we’re gradually getting there but it’s not something that gets fixed overnight, but we’ll keep pushing and keep trying

I always try to use a negative and make it into a positive, but when I started to get things about materialistic things that we’re being referred back to me and people labelling me, that’s what upset me. I don’t have a problem with you talking about my football, if I had a good game or bad game, that doesn’t bother me, of course I want to have a good game and if I don’t have a good game I will be upset. But at the same time, it felt like a constant attack for no valid reason. At times I was really, really low. I’m a person that I would even say stuff to my mum or my girlfriend but I take it in and just keep moving. I just thought to myself: ‘if I know how much it’s affecting me, in terms of the wordings that people are using to basically put me in a group of people, what would happen to a 17-year-old kid that’s not probably as mentally as strong as I was?’

With football over here, a lot [is about] your personal life. Everyone just wants to have an easy life - a smooth, sailing ship and not really have any commotion. I think this is one of the reasons that triggers a lot of players to not just say stuff. I feel that if it is actually something you really, truly do believe in, it’s one of those that you do need to speak up and let your voice to be heard. What happens in the next five-10 years or 10-15 years? Is this going to continue to carry on? I always refer back to a 17-year-old me when I think about stuff like this is. If I was 17 again, what would I like to happen? That’s all I try to do

[Sterling says Racism the only disease we are fighting right now] I know this might sound a little bit cheesy but the only disease right now is the racism that we are fighting. This is the most important thing at this moment in time because this is something that is happening for years and years. Just like the pandemic, we want to find a solution to stop it. At the same time, this is what all these protesters are doing. They are trying to find a solution and a way to stop the injustice they are seeing, and they are fighting for their cause. As long as they are doing it peacefully and safely and not hurting anybody and not breaking into any stores, they continue to protest in this peaceful way

[The England international says he does not fear putting his career at risk by speaking out about the issue and warned that protesting can only go so far] I don’t really think about my job when things like this happen, I think about what’s right There’s only so much communities and other backgrounds can take – especially black people. It’s been going on for hundreds of years and people are tired and people are ready for change. This is something that needs more than just talking. We need to actually implement change and highlight the places that do need changes. But this is something that I will continue to do, spark these debates and get people in my industry looking at themselves and thinking what they can do to give people an equal chance in this country

[Sterling calls for more minority coaches and executives at the top level] The coaching staff that you see around football clubs: there’s Steven Gerrard, your Frank Lampards, your Sol Campbells and your Ashley Coles. All had great careers, all played for England. At the same time, they’ve all respectfully done their coaching badges to coach at the highest level and the two that haven’t been given the right opportunities are the two black former players. The change is being able to speak to people in Parliament, people at the hierarchy at my football club, football clubs across the country, people at the national team of England, to implement change and give equal chances to not just black coaches but also different ethnicities

Give black coaches, not just coaches but people in their respective fields, the right opportunity. I feel like that’s what’s lacking here, it’s not just taking the knee, it is about giving people the chance they deserve. There’s something like 500 players in the Premier League and a third of them are black and we have no representation of us in the hierarchy, no representation of us in the coaching staffs. There’s not a lot of faces that we can relate to and have conversations with. When there’s someone from a black background I can go to in the FA with a problem I have within the club, that will be when I know change is happening and not just in my field, also in Parliament. Once we do see those numbers shifting, that’s when I’ll be happy and the people will be happy

[Sterling, meanwhile, says its important for these conversations to continue going forward, even after the worldwide protests die down] The protest is a great starting point, to make your voice be heard. But just protesting alone is not going to make a change in this country. It’s how we move on from here. It’s about highlighting things, the society that needs changing, and then acting upon it. We’ve done a lot of talking, and it’s time now to act
