[Raheem Sterling shows his coach’s age, with the goal having been scored more than 13 years before the young England international was born] I didn’t understand what the gaffer said when I was first told about it. But then I typed both names into Google, so now I know

[Raheem Sterling on why he shaved his head] I wasn’t scoring for a few games, so I thought, ‘Let me just change it up’, and I’ve scored. As soon as I cut this I was ill for a few days, but now I’m sticking with it for a while

[Raheem Sterling on rejecting Liverpool’s contact offer] I don’t want to be perceived as a money-grabbing 20-year-old. It is about winning trophies throughout your career – I don’t talk about how many cars I will drive or how many houses I’ve got

[Raheem Sterling recalls making his World Cup debut against Italy at Brazil 2014 in Manaus] I remember the game like it was no time ago. It was a massive game for me – I just thought to myself: ‘If only my dad was here’. I wish my dad could have been there but he passed away. So to myself I said: ‘I need to play well for him because he’s never been at a football match. He’s never seen me on a football pitch’. So I wanted to win that game and we never won in the end but it was an alright performance from me. I was just so determined to do well

[Raheem Sterling talking after ending his England goal drought] It was beautiful feeling. I put a lot of pressure on myself to get in the box and score goals and it’s my position to score goals so I need to keep going. It meant a lot, it’s been three years without scoring so it meant a lot

[Raheem Sterling speaks about the perception of him in the media] From the very start of my career, there has been a perception of a flashy kid from London: loves cars, loves the flashy lifestyle. I’m not saying I’m a saint or anything, but that is the complete opposite of who I am. [Fans] do not know me. They will define me by what they read about me; that is how they will treat me. When people are making the public believe you are a character you aren’t, that is hurtful, and it is degrading

[England’s players were subjected to racist abuse during Monday night’s 6-0 Euro 2020 qualifying win over Bulgaria in Sofia] Feeling sorry for Bulgaria to be represented by such idiots in their stadium. Anyway.. 6-0 and we go back home, at least we did our job. Safe travel to our fans, u guys did well

I believe people understand me now – they can see the truth and ignore what they have heard about me previously. They see that I’m a person who only wants to do the best for the national team

[Raheem Sterling says Emotions got the better of me in Joe Gomez incident] First and foremost everyone knows what that game means to me! Everyone knows that I am not that way inclined and more to the point […] both Joe and I have had words and figured things out and moved on. We are in a sport where emotions run high and I am man enough to admit when emotions got the better of me. We move [sic] this is why we play this sport because of our love for it – me and @joegomez5 are good we both understand it was a 5-10 second thing it’s done we move forward and not make this bigger than it is. Let’s get focus [sic] on our game on Thursday.

[Raheem Sterling: Real Madrid a fantastic club but I’m happy at Manchester City] It’s one of those things. Right now I’m at City and I’m really happy. But I say Real Madrid are a fantastic club. When you see the white shirt you know exactly what the club stands for - it’s massive. But, at the same time, I have a contract with City now and I have to respect this. But it’s a fantastic club

[Rumours of their interest], it’s something that you see all the time, but I’m a City player and I’m enjoying it at the moment, even if things haven’t gone quite planned in the league. We now have a massive opportunity in the Champions League. I keep saying Real Madrid is a fantastic club, there’s lovely weather, but I keep saying that I am quite happy at City

[Speculation has grown over the future of a City squad without Champions League football but Sterling, whose contract runs until 2023, appears hopeful the appeal can be successful] It’s something we don’t know much about yet because it’s something that has not been confirmed. The club has a long way to go and we just have to wait and see what happens, but I have full confidence in the club

[England and Manchester City star Raheem Sterling reveals his eight-year-old daughter and Liverpool fan Melody Rose teases him by singing Mohamed Salah chants] She has my sort of personality and she likes to banter and chant Mo Salah’s songs to me. She knows the rivalry between Liverpool and the team that I play for so she’s always singing their songs and trying to wind me up but that’s just her personality

[Sterling says Racism the only disease we are fighting right now] I know this might sound a little bit cheesy but the only disease right now is the racism that we are fighting. This is the most important thing at this moment in time because this is something that is happening for years and years. Just like the pandemic, we want to find a solution to stop it. At the same time, this is what all these protesters are doing. They are trying to find a solution and a way to stop the injustice they are seeing, and they are fighting for their cause. As long as they are doing it peacefully and safely and not hurting anybody and not breaking into any stores, they continue to protest in this peaceful way

[The England international says he does not fear putting his career at risk by speaking out about the issue and warned that protesting can only go so far] I don’t really think about my job when things like this happen, I think about what’s right There’s only so much communities and other backgrounds can take – especially black people. It’s been going on for hundreds of years and people are tired and people are ready for change. This is something that needs more than just talking. We need to actually implement change and highlight the places that do need changes. But this is something that I will continue to do, spark these debates and get people in my industry looking at themselves and thinking what they can do to give people an equal chance in this country

[Sterling calls for more minority coaches and executives at the top level] The coaching staff that you see around football clubs: there’s Steven Gerrard, your Frank Lampards, your Sol Campbells and your Ashley Coles. All had great careers, all played for England. At the same time, they’ve all respectfully done their coaching badges to coach at the highest level and the two that haven’t been given the right opportunities are the two black former players. The change is being able to speak to people in Parliament, people at the hierarchy at my football club, football clubs across the country, people at the national team of England, to implement change and give equal chances to not just black coaches but also different ethnicities

Give black coaches, not just coaches but people in their respective fields, the right opportunity. I feel like that’s what’s lacking here, it’s not just taking the knee, it is about giving people the chance they deserve. There’s something like 500 players in the Premier League and a third of them are black and we have no representation of us in the hierarchy, no representation of us in the coaching staffs. There’s not a lot of faces that we can relate to and have conversations with. When there’s someone from a black background I can go to in the FA with a problem I have within the club, that will be when I know change is happening and not just in my field, also in Parliament. Once we do see those numbers shifting, that’s when I’ll be happy and the people will be happy

[Sterling, meanwhile, says its important for these conversations to continue going forward, even after the worldwide protests die down] The protest is a great starting point, to make your voice be heard. But just protesting alone is not going to make a change in this country. It’s how we move on from here. It’s about highlighting things, the society that needs changing, and then acting upon it. We’ve done a lot of talking, and it’s time now to act

[Raheem Sterling will head to Chelsea on Thursday night with a Black Lives Matter badge prominently printed on his Manchester City shirt] It was a massive step for the Premier League to allow something like that to happen, it shows we’re going in the right direction. It shows we’re achieving change. It was natural and organic.

[Sterling’s shooting boots return in time to finally bury Reds hoodoo] It was weird at first, to see yourself in a different shirt and, against a club that’s done so much for you. It’s also emotional. But now I have matured past that and feel I have had some good games against them. Now I’ve got past that stage. It’s gone. It was a little thing but I’m now fully focused and fully ready

[Raheem Sterling targeting FA Cup and Champions League glory with Manchester City] It is difficult seeing Liverpool take the title from us, but they have been brilliant all year. They have been fantastic and deserved to win the league. [The Liverpool game] was just another game, but it was a chance to finish high. In the Premier League we need to win all our games and finish on a high in the FA Cup and the Champions League. Hopefully we can finish with an FA Cup final and a Champions League final. We are a team that missed out on the Premier League and we have got to go on and try to do our best as we can in all competitions and that is the FA Cup and the Champions League.
