[Roberto Mancini has already signed Patrick Vieira once, for Inter in 2006, and is confident he can still make an impact in England’s top flight] He knows me and my staff well, and importantly he also knows what the Premier League is all about. He will not need much time to settle in. Patrick is one of the great players of his era with almost every honour in the game against his name. I am sure City fans will welcome him warmly and appreciate the contribution he will make

[why Owen Hargreaves could be the man to bolster Manchester City’s midfield options] We didn’t know what his condition would be when we had to decide. It was difficult. It is possible we could bring him in [to the Champions League squad] during January. We are short of players. Fulham were able to make changes after playing in Europe, we were not. We became tired. All the players need to defend. To defend with five or six players is not good enough

[Roberto Mancini hitting out on Thursday at what he believes are inadequate medical standards in English football] Here in England is the best championship in the world - it’s fantastic - but we need to improve the medical side for the players. We need to screen the players more often, maybe twice a year and more accurately. When I saw our medical system, I was really worried when I arrived two years ago. I said that we had to do it better. It is better in Italy. The medicals for all players are fantastic. The medicals are really strong in Italy during pre-season, for every player, and they happen every six months.

When I came here and saw all the players in pre-season for their medical, I said to the doctor, ‘This is not enough for the players’. I felt it was a really light medical. It is not enough. For me, it is not good. It’s impossible that one young guy dies on the pitch because we didn’t do a medical accurately.

I want that our players and all the players in the Premier League can have a more accurate medical. Always, not just once a year

In 2012, it can’t be that something happens to a player like on Saturday. It is impossible. Fabrice Muamba is 23. I hope that it will go very well for him and I pray for him because this situation is impossible

[Joe Hart produces a series of world-class saves in a pulsating 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund at the Etihad Stadium] Joe Hart saved us from an incredible defeat because he saved everything and we should say thank you to him. I don’t know if it is the best performance in football history but he did very well. I don’t know if it is the best performance in football history but he did very well. In the first half we had three or four incredible chances, but if you don’t defend, if you don’t run like Borussia Dortmund did, it is difficult. This is my problem - it is my job. I will solve this problem

[Roberto Mancini following the passing of his former Sampdoria coach Vujadin Boskov] Boskov made my youth extraordinarily beautiful. I imagine he’s up in heaven now. And if I remember rightly, he’ll be laughing already

[Roberto Mancini on his season] I’m speechless. I don’t remember the last time I lost three games in a row. I must have been only ten. Losing like this hurts. We were fools

[Roberto Mancini on an incident after he led Manchester City to the Premier League title in 2012] When I was in my office after the [title-winning] game, Liam Gallagher from Oasis came in. He’s a big fan of City and he planted a big kiss on my mouth - I didn’t have time to react!

[Roberto Mancini believes Mario Balotelli only has himself to blame for not being at the same level as Cristiano Ronaldo] Mario Balotelli is a really good kid, but a bit ruled by his instinct. Apart from when he does something daft, but those can happen when you’re young. He has so much quality that, when he started, he should’ve been at the level of Ronaldo. If he isn’t there now, then at least some of that is his own fault. Now, he is 26 years old, and can do a little more

[The Azzurri head coach Roberto Mancini says about the new Italy national team after a year on from the humiliation of failing to reach a World Cup finals for the first time since 1958] I want an Italy team that attacks in a spectacular way, to also thank the San Siro public. I know they will come out in force and their support is very important

[A reminder of the bad times came last week, when predecessor Giampiero Ventura left Serie A club Chievo after failing to win in four matches] To say Italy has been healed is a big statement - I do not think she has ever been ill. We needed to do better to get out of a difficult moment. We must play good football and win the fans back. We are Italy

[Italy coach Roberto Mancini is confident his team can replicate the likes of France and Spain and usher in a new era heading into Euro 2020] If we do good work, if we play attacking football that is entertaining and gratifying, then results are possible. We are Italy, we can be like France and Spain in opening up a new era. It’s a good moment in our football. If we were to face France now, they’d beat us, but we’ll be able to have our say once Euro 2020 comes around. My idea was originally to target success in the 2022 World Cup, but now we can challenge for Euro 2020.

We have some real young talents coming through. Moise Kean is only 19 years old, so it’s up to him, but he can become an extraordinary striker. I sometimes use him on the wing, but if he does what he needs to, then he’ll be a centre-forward. Then there are Sandro Tonali, Nicolo Barella, Gianluca Mancini and Zaniolo. They look pretty talented to me and also physically strong, so we can have our say. There is the issue of experience, because in my day, we’d reach their age and already have three years of Serie A football under our belts. On the other hand, it’s refreshing to see their reactions and naivety

[Roberto Mancini wanted Italy to push for a fourth goal in Saturday’s 3-0 Euro 2020 qualification win over Greece] I don’t think it was our best performance. The important thing is that we continued to improve, we did well from the first minute and put the match on the right track. The most important aspect now is: why didn’t we score a fourth goal in the second half? We should’ve pushed harder, but at times we sat back and should’ve converted some of the other chances. We risked conceding, as Greece nearly hurt us on the counter a couple of times. I said we’re ahead of schedule, but still have a lot of work to do. The Nations League didn’t go that badly either, as we were in the running until the last game.

[It would also be desperately unfair to ask a 19-year-old Moise Kean to both restore the Azzurri to its former glory, while at the same time leading the fight against racism] You [the media] shouldn’t put too much pressure on Kean; he can’t solve all our problems by himself

[Roberto Mancini says Mario Balotelli being without a club as a new season approaches is not normal] At 29, and for the second year in a row, less than 10 days before the start of the championship, he still didn’t have the absolute certainty of a team. He didn’t prepare, he didn’t train regularly. He must reflect, it is not normal

[On whether Brescia might be the right option in terms of Balotelli getting back into the Italian national fold] Whether it will be a good solution does not depend on Brescia but on him. Perhaps by playing closer to home he will feel more comfortable, but it is not [guaranteed to] be enough. I love him, but for him I can’t do anything anymore. He must think that he is in the middle of his career and that he still has much to give - if he wants

[Mancini’s hopes in attack for Italy are far more likely to rest on Moise Kean, who completed a surprise switch from Juventus to Everton during the close season] It is a pity because he is Italian and an international. But he goes to play in a beautiful and difficult league, at a club where they have not won for years and have to make the team competitive again. This can help him grow; my sorrow is more personal. But by now we know - it is no longer the football of 20 years ago, when everyone came to play in Italy, the most beautiful championship where they earned the most

[On whether Serie A should aspire to be more like the Premier League] We can’t expect the rhythm of the Premier League, that’s just their thing. They have always been used to it - much faster and with fewer interruptions. With us, the pace can grow and we must understand that technical quality is essential. But we are making progress

[Italy head coach Roberto Mancini also fielded questions on the Lukaku abuse ahead of his team’s matches against Armenia and Finland] We all hope not to hear those racist chants but it still happens here in Italy, like in England as well unfortunately. Unfortunately, there are unintelligent people in the stadiums. Lukaku is right saying that in 2019 these kinds of things shouldn’t happen. By now we should have got rid of these things

[On Monday, Lukaku issued a statement calling for footballers to unify against racism and for social media companies to do more to combat discrimination] I think that the majority of people in football are already working in this direction to do all they can to improve the situation about racism. We all hope that those people who make these mistakes nowadays will understand it’s wrong and, with time, won’t do it anymore. But I’m afraid that there will always be some unintelligent people repeating the same mistakes, unfortunately

[Italy laboured for much of Thursday’s encounter, only going ahead when Lorenzo Pellegrini headed home in the 77th minute, before Andrea Belotti’s second goal sealed the points in Group J] I don’t know if it was our worst performance. I said it would be difficult because easy games no longer exist. We didn’t start well, conceded a goal, but could’ve turned it around before half-time. In a way, the red card penalised us, as Armenia just focused on defending with 10 men and didn’t allow any spaces. The truth is Armenia were physically superior and are mid-way through their seasons. We did what we needed to, we need to do more, but we’re working on it

[Roberto Mancini said Italy were guilty of creating their own problems as they scraped past Finland on Sunday] There was a little bit of suffering, but we created it ourselves. We were dominating the game and gave away the ball cheaply. The team did very well overall, although we had a few scares when it was 1-1. We must try to improve; these games are tough and make us stronger. It’s positive to dominate away from home when making five changes from the last match, so we have a lot of talent to draw from. Our intention is to always attack. Naturally, that means you’re going to allow a few chances. We gave away the penalty on a ball that we shouldn’t have misplaced, so they put some pressure on, but we got back in front so it was a good performance

[Arsenal youngster Martinelli asked to snub Brazil for Italian national team] As for Martinelli, it’s not so easy to apply to play for Italy. We need to wait for players with two passports. In the meantime, we’ll continue to exchange [Ciro] Immobile with [Andrea] Belotti

[Italy national team coach Roberto Mancini has revealed that it is his team’s intention to go all the way and lift the trophy at the 2020 European Championship] It is certainly a little more difficult, especially at the start, as if you have three or four players from one team then it’s easier for them to gel. Having said that, I think we overcame the initial difficult pretty well. We are happy to have given an identity to this team. We play attacking football and defend pretty well too. We’ve got almost a year to go before the Euros and we need to improve, but the objective is to win. Italy has won four World Cups. We have to aim to win

[The 54-year-old, however, insists that there is still plenty of work to be done to get the best out of his preferred players] Lorenzo Insigne is a player of great quality. Naturally, if he spends a lot of time and energy tracking back, he loses that sharpness and unpredictability in attack. So we want him to keep playing with the team but also focus more on going forward. It depends on his team-mates, too, as if the whole side keeps pushing forward and doesn’t defend to deep, the strikers don’t waste too much energy going back to help. We know Insigne can probably give more than he does, even when he’s having a great night. When you find a player with that kind of quality, you always expect something more. I hope the Olimpico is pretty full. I hope it’s full and that’s a sign of what we’ll see at the Euros. We have to take the game to Greece and keep improving as a team. That’s the objective

[Another of Insigne’s coaches, Roberto Mancini, is also becoming anxious for silverware with the Italian national team and sees the Napoli star’s contributions as key to the Azzurri’s target of winning Euro 2020] Insigne is a player of great quality. We want him to focus more on going forward … [so he] doesn’t waste too much energy going back to help. We know Insigne can probably give more than he does, even when he’s having a great night. When you find a player with that kind of quality, you always expect something more

[Victory over Greece was Mancini’s eighth successive win, meaning he could equal Italy’s all-time record of consecutive triumphs against Liechtenstein on Tuesday. But Mancini dismissed the importance of that, highlighting the coach who set the record - Vittorio Pozzo - has an altogether more impressive legacy] Pozzo is a legend because he won two World Cups, the rest does not count. Pozzo is a legend because he won two World Cups, the rest does not count

[Roberto Mancini loves Balotelli but won’t recall him just to make anti-racism statement] Football is a sport and as such it must unite people and not get destroyed by those few who make mistakes. I love Mario. I played him when he was a teenager. He is still young enough to give much to the sport, but for me it is important to state that if I am to call him up, it’s because he deserves it and can help us. Then, after what happened, I could have called him up, as the [Italian Football Federation] president [Gabriele Gravina] said, but I think it’s important I call him when he technically deserves it, not to send a message. He still has other chances.

We are nearly in 2020 and skin colour… It is not very easy for some people to change their attitude, unfortunately. We called up some young players [instead] because from now until March we will not have the chance to see them live [for Italy].

[Italy manager Roberto Mancini says reports of a frosty relationship between Cristiano Ronaldo and Maurizio Sarri at Juventus have been overblown] It is always difficult to replace a big player. Because a player with Ronaldo’s qualities can always be expected to make a difference at any time during a game. It probably came after a week with some physical problems and Sarri considered it correct to take Ronaldo off. These are things that happen. I don’t see anything serious, this can happen between players and coaches

[Mancini managed Ibrahimovic at city rivals Intermilan, and believes he would still make an impact on Serie A at the age of 38] Zlatan has been one of the greatest strikers in the world. He’s scored so many goals. He’s a physically sensational player. Despite his age, he can still do very well in Serie A. I don’t think the pace of Serie A has changed in the last 50 years, our league could never be like the Premier League, where the referee whistles less and the games are very fast

2019 11 19 Retrieve

[Mancini says other countries want to avoid Italy at Euro 2020] I don’t know if they are worried or not. think they are stronger because they are one step ahead with their plan. France started some years ago, they reached a Euro final and won the World Cup. They are young and I think they are one of the strongest teams. Spain the same. Belgium in the last five, six years produced a lot of outstanding talents. Then England. All those teams stared earlier. Italy has a great history. I don’t think other teams will face Italy easily. Maybe they are not scared, buy if they could choose would face another opponent instead of Italy

[Mancini praised his players for their improvement and hopes there is more to come from Italy at Euro 2020] These are all young lads who are improving game by game. Playing at international level brings experience, they’ve got the quality, it’s just a matter of time. We’ll see what happens at Euro 2020. We’d never won all 10 games in a qualifying group, we’ve got six months to prepare for the championship and unfortunately I will have to leave some behind, as I can only bring 23 players. If we can continue like this, that would be great

2019 11 19b Retrieve

[Mancini was effusive in his praise of his players and is optimistic for the future on winning Euro 2020] It was a lovely evening, the last game in qualifying and we did it well. You don’t score nine goals in an international match nowadays, we gave our all to achieve that. These are all young lads who are improving game by game. [Italy manager Roberto Mancini believes his side are not favourites in Group A for Euro 2020] All games are to be played. We are not the favourites, as all these teams play good football. The fact we are playing in Rome is a small advantage, but every match will still be difficult. I want to single out Wales, because they play excellent football and have many of their players in the Premier League. They are solid and not easy to beat. If we want to reach the semi-finals and Final in London, we’ve got to go through the whole journey.

Every game could be predictable on paper, but Croatia, for example, are the World Cup runners-up. So let’s focus on getting through the group first. Nothing is to be taken for granted. Maybe some of the favourites will go out early, but if you want to go all the way to Wembley, you need to beat everyone in front of you. We’re doing well, but there’s a lot more work to do and we need to improve a great deal from here to the Euros. Now I face a big problem whittling down my squad to just 23 players

[When Roberto Mancini went to watch him play against Republic of Ireland in Dublin recently, Kean was sent off. The Azzurri boss expressed some sympathy with the forward afterwards, given he had been dismissed for a fairly innocuous clash with Troy Parrott, but he tellingly added] Moise Kean is always involved. He needs to be more careful

[Roberto Mancini says Italy can win the European Championship] I don’t know how it will end. But there are more important things than Euro 2020, without a doubt. If they postpone the tournament, we can win even in a year. The important thing is the health of everyone and that we can all return to the stadium and enjoy ourselves. Seeing people die in these last few days is hurting us too much

[Mancini said he has a squad of players in mind for the finals] I had a fairly safe list of players called. It was ready with only a few doubts to decide at the last minute. However, if the tournament is suspended for a year, there will be a few changes. We have to wait to Tuesday to understand if UEFA will decide to postpone Euro 2020. The problems we have had in Italy in the last 15 days will now be seen in other countries

[Italy manager Roberto Mancini says he would like to see Chelsea’s Emerson Palmieri return to Serie A as he considers his selection for the delayed European Championship] As for the full-backs, we knew Adam Masina, although he disappeared from the radar a bit after his move to Watford. Luca Pellegrini already spent time with the senior squad and can improve. It would be nice if Emerson Palmieri, who hasn’t played much for Chelsea, could come and play in Italy.

[Mancini knows football is not the priority right now. However, he remains optimistic about the ability of football to bring joy back to the people once it is safe to play] I expect a European Championship of a very high level, of great quality. We will try to win a top tournament. I can’t wait to stand in front of the bench and listen to the national anthem play out. After everything the country is going through, it’s going to be an immense sensation

[Roma’s young star Nicolo Zaniolo’s participation in the tournament was in doubt after suffering a cruciate ligament rupture, but he now has time to recover his fitness] Clearly, recovering a player with unique characteristics like Zaniolo is important and the many young players we have already in the squad will be more experienced next summer. If the likes of Federico Chiesa were to move to a bigger club and play international club football, that could also speed up the maturation process. As I told his father, Federico has to play with the utmost enthusiasm. Others like Domenico Berardi ought to be a star already with his capabilities, but he’s still 25 and can grow a great deal in future

[Balotelli is allergic to grass] His face was swollen - I don’t know why. He wanted to play in the second half but he had this problem 10 seconds before coming out. I came out a minute before the players and I didn’t see Mario. He then said he could play but his face was swollen.

[Roberto Mancini says Balotelli has quality to play for Italy again but has to do more to earn international recall] [Balotelli], in terms of the qualities he has he is one of the best around, but that’s not enough. He has to give more; at Brescia he hasn’t done a lot and he knows it. Our hope is to have him at 100 per cent, like in 2012 under [Cesare] Prandelli

None of us would have wanted the Euros to be postponed, especially for this reason. So many people have died and football becomes secondary. Right now, we have a young squad and we can still improve. We would have had a chance this year, but there were teams who were more prepared and started earlier, or those who already imposed themselves like France. With an extra year the guys will be able to improve by playing important games, so in this sense the national team will improve. But we will have to see the games, because with matches being closer to each other we might have less time to prepare. We’ve started a project that we can still improve, this is why having more time will help us

[Roberto Mancini says Ibrahimovic on the same level as Messi & Ronaldo] Zlatan will be remembered as one of the greatest forwards of all time. I put him on the same level as Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. He won the league title wherever he went, scoring a ton of goals. He’s done well at Milan too this season, but I don’t know what his plans are for the future

[Former Inter preisdet Massimo Moratti has claimed that Messi may not be out of reach for Serie A giants] If he [Moratti] had remained president of Inter, knowing him I think he would have tried, as he did with Ronaldo, who was one of the strongest strikers in the world, and he managed to bring him to the Inter. In the newspapers we read that Messi is not very happy, but maybe he will be happiest if he stays at Barcelona

[Italy boss Mancini on possible Balotelli recall: The doors are open] If he only thinks about football and does what he has to do, the doors are open, for him as for many other players who may not have been called up. Mario is like everyone else - he has important qualities, but it depends only on him

[Mancini said of Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo] He will grow like the other younger boys. Another year will be important for him. The first time I saw him he played as a midfielder and I think that’s his position. But he has the possibility to play wide on the right, as he is playing in Rome at times. If a player with important qualities can fill multiple roles without any problems, this is an advantage for him and for us

Bringing the championship back to Italy after so many years, since the last one was won in 1968, would be a magnificent thing we want to do. We have the qualities to do it

[Roberto Mancini backs Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo to become an ‘extraordinary player’] If he continues to train seriously and make an athlete’s life, he could become an extraordinary player. He is young and does not yet have many Serie A matches in the legs, so that not all responsibility falls on him. I think he has not yet found his role. He can do two or three. He is one of those young players who with another year will be able to improve, will recover from the injury

Zaniolo may be a very important player. He is also very young, he will have one more year to improve. My hope is to have all the players available and have difficulty in making choices. I think the team can improve. We came from many games played well and won and there was great enthusiasm. It would have been great to play now

[Italy manager Roberto Mancini believes Mario Balotelli is throwing his talent away but still has time to turn his career around] I care for him, regardless of all the things he does. I trained him when he was still just a kid, I played him and he was extraordinary for many years. My hope is that he will do something to change all this, as he’s still only 30 years old and would be at the peak of his football maturity. I hope one day he wakes up and realises he’s still throwing his talent away. Mario is an extraordinary lad, so kind and polite. I have explained to him many times that he is throwing his talent away, because his potential is remarkable
