[on Harry Kane] I don’t want any other striker than Harry. We are very confident in him. He works very hard for the team, which is what we need, and he is scoring goals. He keeps the ball well for us and I am very happy for him, for what he is doing this season. [. . .] Harry makes the difference for us because everyone in the team works very hard for him

[Nice if great guy Blind returns to Ajax] Daley is a great guy. We did not just play together, but also went to school together. He is a proper Amsterdammer. It is nice for both parties involved that he has said he would be open to a return - if it happens

[A return to Ajax has also been floated] It’s hard to look into the future, but a return to Ajax could be an option on the long term. I had a great time there

[Toby Alderweireld continues to be linked with a move to Manchester United, with a £25 million exit clause in his contract] I’m going to say the same thing that I’ve been saying for the past couple of years. The only focus is Spurs, because of this focus I think I had a good season as well. I have one year left on my contract, so in my head, I will play for Spurs next season.

We are going to do everything to win it and if we win it I think we deserve it as well. If you see our route in the Champions League, it has not been easy. In the group Barcelona and Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund in Germany, Man City first in England and Ajax in Holland so it was a very tough route. I think the mentality of the team showed us that we can achieve anything we want

[Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld has played in the Champions League final before and is determined to win against Liverpool this time after the disappointment of defeat in 2014] We were so close to winning it. Ramos scored in the 90th minute or something so, yeah, the feeling of losing, not winning it is very hard. It was [difficult to deal with] because I was 25 years old. It was a strange moment. Everyone is saying it is unbelievable about Spurs getting to the final but we’re not happy with playing a final - we want to win it.

In the last couple of weeks we’ve been training like animals. We’re trying to give our best every day because that is the way we need to work to be in the right state for the final. Everybody wants to be there, to be involved and give their best, and the final is not going to start on Saturday - it started two weeks ago

[He believes this experience will stand them in good stead in Madrid on Saturday] I think we have quite a mature group so I don’t have to talk too much, but I think just to stay calm and do the normal things. A lot of players have played in really big games, World Cups and stuff like this, so we know what to do. Of course, the tension will get more as the week goes on but we have the maturity in our group and that is not a problem

[Toby Alderweireld wants to have ‘Champions League winner’ as an entry on his CV] We were so close to winning it. The feeling of losing is very hard. That night I flew to Belgium because we had the World Cup coming up, so there was no time to grieve. After the World Cup, when I had time to think about it, I thought it was a big chance, a big opportunity, and maybe it will never come again. I will take this feeling to the final and show I want it more than anyone else

: 2019 07 15 AS Roma director Gianluca Petrachi has confirmed the club are interested in signing Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld.

[Toby Alderweireld claims to be focused on Spurs as questions continue to be asked of his future in north London] I’ve always said, I’m focused on Spurs and trying to deliver the job that I need to do

[Quizzed on whether he expects to start the 2019-20 campaign as a Tottenham player] Yes, that’s my focus

[Alderweireld is delighted to still be figuring prominently in the plans of his manager] In football, everything can go quick but my focus is on Spurs and to be ready for the start of the season. The manager knows that I’m committed to the team and to the club. Today I was made captain which shows the manager’s trust in me

: 2019 07 26 Mauricio Pochettino refused to be drawn on Toby Alderweireld’s transfer situation amid interest from Manchester United and Roma

[Toby Alderweireld admits the home dressing room was a difficult place to be after 7-2 home defeat to Bayern Munich match] [The manager] went straight to do media so we were just with the lads. We didn’t say a lot. Everyone was quiet. We need some time to think about it. Of course it’s some sort of feeling of embarrassment. I think every shot from them was a goal and that’s difficult to process in the game. We got to 4-2 and tried to press them, and then of course there’s space for them and they did very well at the end. The last couple of goals, we took a lot of risks. We brought attackers on and tried to force something but then we conceded a couple of goals. We have to be men and take responsibility and try to change this as quickly as possible

[Toby Alderweireld is sure Tottenham will appoint a big manager after the Premier League club elected to relieve Mauricio Pochettino of his post] Spurs are a big club, there will be a big manager for us. Hopefully we know quickly. It is a difficult situation, I don’t know really the right thing to say. It needs a couple of days to sink in. I’m 30, and it’ll be the first time in my career there’s been a change of manager [at my team] so it’ll be strange for me. I can’t say how it feels. We have to work hard and I think there will be a new manager quickly. We have to stay together, change things as quickly as possible together. The strength of our team is the work rate - that won’t be changing

I am surprised. We came a long way together, with a lot of players, achieved big things, you can see from where we’ve come from before my time at Spurs, we achieved a lot of things together and I think he took the club to the next level

[Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has signed a new contract, keeping him at the north London club until 2023] I’m very, very happy. No words can describe it. Another couple of years here at Spurs, I think there is no place I could be happier. I’m honoured to play for this club, and I’m a small piece of getting the club to the next level in a couple of seasons. To reach the Champions League season-in, season-out and to then go to the final as well […] so I think this is just the beginning of something. Something big, and something very exciting.

If you’re happy and enjoying yourself, time flies! Football and me, my family is very happy here. I’m very lucky to have a very good connection with the fans and the club from the beginning. People know my history, of course I played for Ajax and I have a lot of respect for the club but now I’m a Spurs player and I couldn’t see myself playing for another team. I think I’ve got a love for the club and I think it goes both ways. I love the club, the fans, everything; the stadium, it’s like I’m living some sort of dream. At the beginning, when I came here, they accepted me very well, it’s like being friends. You couldn’t do the things we’ve done in the last couple of years if you’ve not got a very good group. Now we’ve come from young players to more adult, and now it’s time to be even better

[Toby Alderweireld revealed he didn’t witness the alleged incident against Rudiger, but hoped this type of racist behaviour was stamped out of football quickly] I did not know on the pitch was was happening but obviously after the game we heard more about it. It does not belong in football, I hope they find the individuals quickly because it is not good and we are all sick of it

[Toby Alderweireld claims to have never considered a move away from Tottenham] I understand the questions were there but I never thought about leaving. I don’t like to talk about myself but the only thing I can say about myself is that every game I do everything on the pitch that I can. Everything. I think that’s why maybe we have a good connection, the fans and me. I’m very happy and it was always in my mind to stay. It’s easy to talk now like this after I signed a deal but hand on my heart it’s true. Of course [Mourinho] is an influence but in a decision like this there’s a lot of things to consider. You talk with your family, of course my wife. I’m 30, you think, ‘Do I want something else?’ The more I was thinking, ‘What am I going to do?’ the more my decision went towards Spurs. At the end, it was not a difficult decision. The connection with the fans was a big factor, big factor. From day one, it’s a cliche but I felt at home, I felt good. I think they appreciate what I’ve done for the club and I just want to pay them back with loyalty and with good performances in the next couple of seasons

There’s a lot of things: family, how I feel about the club, the fans, how I am with the manager. Of course, there’s a financial part as well, so it’s all small parts that make your decision. I know I can get maybe a different deal somewhere else but I chose loyalty, Spurs and football

[He said after figuring in a 2-0 defeat to London rivals Chelsea on Sunday] Maybe I’m unusual. I don’t know what’s in the heads of other players. I always enjoyed playing for Spurs, always. Even on nights like this, when everything goes wrong I try to put 100 per cent so they know I did everything for the club. And I’m quite a loyal guy. So if I’m going, it wasn’t an easy step for me. I just want to be here for many more years

2020 01 05 Retrieve

[Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld says Jose Mourinho was a decisive factor in signing a new deal at the club] Financially the club made a good effort that showed me they really wanted me so that gave me respect. I could maybe earn a lot more somewhere else, but then I chose loyalty, that’s worth something as well.

I talked to my wife, we have a second kid on the way. First of all, I asked her: ‘What do you want?’ She said she’s happy to stay, she loves it here, but that I can choose whatever I want. That gave me the opportunity to explore everything that I wanted. But the more that I thought about a new episode somewhere else, the more I thought, ‘No, I just want to stay.’ I’ve always been happy here since day one. I’ve felt very wanted here and have a very good connection with the fans. Then, of course, the last step was the manager, who really believed in me. I had a good connection with him from day one. So all those small steps took me into the big decision to stay

[Alderweireld admits recent below-par performances have drawn a stinging reaction from Mourinho] If you are not performing well, he’s angry. That’s normal. He’s a winner. When we don’t win, he’s not happy. That’s very simple. He’s a manager you don’t want to let down. It’s a negative that you don’t want him angry. It’s not about wanting to let him down. We had a good connection with the manager before. We achieved a lot of big things. And it’s the same now - everyone believes in what Jose says and thinks and how we need to play

Imagine the last four seasons, four times in top four, improving in Champions League every time and reaching the final - or one FA Cup? It is short-term vision for me. It is always a discussion, FA Cup or top four? Of course, I want to win a trophy but you have to be realistic in what you have achieved. It would be stupid to think the last four seasons were worth nothing because we didn’t win a trophy. The club had taken a lot of big steps, that has taken a lot of big effort in difficult times - at Wembley, going away from White Hart Lane, things like that. So, we can see what we have done as some sort of trophy but, of course, we want to win one.

[Alderweireld has been a regular for Spurs this season, having played the full 90 minutes in 25 of the club’s 26 league games] The last week has been unbelievable for me with the birth of my son but I haven’t slept - I had to travel eight hours yesterday and then I made a mistake which was hard to deal with but I was happy to help the team with the goal. On pure chances, we had more open chances than them. We could have got the game finished a lot earlier. But getting a last-minute winner is not too bad. It’s a big win for us because it’s a big week. We have the Champions League and then face Chelsea next weekend

[Alderweireld believed this may have played a part in his misjudgement for the own goal, but recognises his error] It wasn’t easy. The wind, the block and the spin, and I thought Hugo might be coming. But we have to move on and realise sometimes we make mistakes

[Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld reveals how ‘unbelievable man-manager’ Mourinho talked him out of Spurs exit] For me Jose Mourinho is an unbelievable people manager, someone who you want to travel eight hours by road to play on a Sunday after your son is born. That’s the feeling you get, the feeling I have for him. You don’t want to disappoint him. I guess it looks like I am happier now because the former manager left and I signed a deal. But I was happy back then as well. There were a lot of things going on behind the contract but I’ve always been happy at Spurs and will always do my best for Spurs. The more options I got the more I had to choose what I wanted and I was just like: ‘I want to stay at Spurs’

With a second child on the way I just wanted to stay and when the new manager came in he just asked me if I wanted to sign. After that the process went a little bit quicker because he did some things. I don’t know what the club’s tactics were. But when Jose came in it moved a bit quicker

[While he was reluctant to openly criticise Pochettino, Alderweireld did admit that being frozen out of the first team in the middle of his contract stand-off was hard on him] It always hurts when you are left out. The manager never gave me any reasons. But I understand that. I am not the guy who knocks on his door and says: ‘Hey, what about me?’. I think that is very selfish. Let’s be honest, he brought this club to the next level and I am grateful for what he did for the club. I think everyone is. I just always thought - again it sounds like arrogance - that I will show I deserved to be in the team, and that’s what I did

[Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld to donate tablet computers to help loved ones during coronavirus crisis] I hope everyone is following the government measures to stop the further spread of the coronavirus. The virus creates many needs, especially the lack of personal contact. If people are sick they can’t see their friends, they can’t see their family. So my plan is to buy dozens of tablets to give to the hospitals and nursing homes so people can video chat with their loved ones and their friends to get through this tough period. In the next couple of days and weeks I’m trying to get those tablets to the places where they can help

Whoever can help, please help! Together, we can come out of this difficult time stronger than ever. Stay safe everyone

[Toby Alderweireld has warned Tottenham’s opponents that the Londoners are fit and raring to go following the coronavirus lockdown] I think we have prepared ourselves in the best way possible. People think because we were in lockdown, we were on some sort of holiday, but we weren’t. Friday we went in lockdown and Saturday and Sunday we were at home - but on Monday we were straight into zoom sessions and all of the equipment was sent to us at home for our muscles. We got the training we needed to keep our tone in the muscles. We had GPS for the running in the park - not easy running, tough running. So when we got back to training it was not like a holiday. And when we trained, we trained very hard. Sometimes it’s harder to train one-on-one than with the whole team. I think we are ready to compete

You cannot compare [lockdown with pre-season]. We didn’t have a holiday, we just prepare and train by ourselves and we didn’t know when we were playing again. Mentally and physically we had to be ready and we were absolutely ready at all time. The Premier League could have said that it could be two to three weeks but we knew we had to be ready. We just had to prepare ourselves physically and mentally for when the time was right to go back again.

[Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld says he is ‘honoured’ by the online petition to replace the statue of former King Leopold II in Antwerp with one of the Belgian defender, although he thinks it is a bit far-fetched] I was laughing [when I saw the petition]. I thought it was some kind of joke, that people are actually signing the petition. I have to say I’m a little bit honoured as well. It’s a small town in Belgium and until I was 15 I spent my youth there. I went to school there and I still go back. If they really wanted to I would never say no because I would be honoured, but I will not sign my own petition. Of all the people who have, I think about 80 per cent are my friends

In training he looks fully fit, top fit, so we’re going to see the old Kane again. He has been out for a longer period so his desire to show everyone is unbelievable, so you’re going to see a very good Kane. Everyone went into ‘beast mode’ - training, training. We didn’t know when we were going back. Maybe the week after, two weeks after. So people think we were on holiday but we sure weren’t. When we were back training we felt like: ‘I’m ready,’ not like in pre-season when it’s: ‘Oh, I have to start all over again, I feel muscle pain’.

[Alderweireld ‘honoured’ by statue petition for Spurs star to replace Leopold II] I was laughing.I thought it was some kind of joke, that people are actually signing the petition. If they really wanted to I would never say no because I would be honoured, but I will not sign my own petition. Of all the people who have, I think about 80 per cent are my friends. I would never say: ‘This is a good time to put up a statue of me,’ because I don’t think I will ever deserve a statue

I don’t know if it’s good to take down the statue and I’m not going to get involved in that, but I do think it’s good to look back at the history and learn from it. It’s the same with the history from the world wars. Of course I’m disgusted about all the things that have involved racism and I will never understand it, but taking a statue down? All I will say is that we have to look to that period and look at what went wrong so we never get in that situation again

In training he looks fully fit, top fit, so we’re going to see the old Kane again. He has been out for a longer period so his desire to show everyone is unbelievable, so you’re going to see a very good Kane.
