[Tottenham defender Danny Rose has revealed that a club wanted to check that he was ‘not crazy’ during transfer talks held in the wake of his mental health admission in 2018] It was because of what I’d said and what I’d been through. I was embarrassed, as whatever I’ve been through I like to think it doesn’t affect me doing my job. I still know I’ll always give 100 per cent.
In the end they didn’t put a bid in. But to think that people assume I might be crazy is embarrassing and I’m still angry about it to this day. If that opportunity came around again I’d definitely say no now

[Danny Rose is determined to put a summer of transfer speculation behind him] It wasn’t tough, it is what it is. Not everything that was publicised in the summer was entirely true and I think in the future I will have my say on everything that happened but I don’t want to focus on negativity at the minute. I guess I should be happy with maybe being up for sale and having started the first four games for Tottenham and the first England game of the campaign. I can’t lie I am very happy, but I just want to say that everything that was written in the summer wasn’t entirely true
I don’t need to prove myself to anybody. I have a manager at club level who knows me. You look at last season, I played in the quarter-final of the Champions League, I played semi-finals of the Champions League, I played in the final. So I’ve got a manager there who believes in me. Then if you look at international I’ve got a manager that whenever I’ve been available for selection I’ve been chosen. He fully believes in me and I’m very grateful. I’m lucky to have managers at club level and international level who believe in me. I don’t feel I’ve got anything to prove to anybody and I feel as if I’ve done enough over the years to prove my worth

[Danny Rose says any speculation surrounding his Tottenham future in January will come to nothing as he intends to run down his contract] It’s pretty obvious what happened [before the season]. People upstairs at Tottenham were trying to do what they were trying to do. I’ve said I’ve got 18 months left on my contract and I’m not going anywhere until my contract has finished. In January, you’re probably going to hear something [about a move]. I’m telling you right now that I’m not going anywhere until my contract is finished. [Tottenham chairman] Daniel Levy told me in the summer there was no new contract for me at Tottenham, which is fine. I respect that. We move on. My contract is up in 18 months’ time and I’ll leave the football club then. People [in the media] can save their time trying to get stuff ready for January about me being sold. Because I can tell you now: it ain’t happening. I know what people were trying to do in the summer. There were no bids - that was rubbish
When the manager stops calling me into his office, stops giving me advice, that’s when I’ll think it’s time to leave Tottenham. But until then, I’m not going anywhere. I’m lucky to have a manager at Tottenham who, from the first day we met, has always stuck by me, regardless of anything, regardless of the rubbish in the media about me being sold or not part of his plans - all that nonsense

[Danny Rose has not discussed his future with Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho] I’ve never had a conversation with him [Mourinho] and I don’t see why I need to. As I said before, I’m here for the next 18 months so I don’t see why I need to have a conversation with the manager. I want to do as well as I possibly can, work as hard as I can to achieve what looked impossible a few weeks ago, and that is finishing in the top four. I’m looking forward to a massive Christmas run that we’ve got
I had the privilege of working under Mauricio for five-and-a-half years and now, I have to be honest, I never thought I would be managed by Jose Mourinho at Tottenham. That’s credit to the club, how well they’ve progressed throughout the years and to get someone like Jose has been obviously brilliant. He’s one of the most decorated managers of my lifetime so it’s been a good start for the team and I’ve enjoyed it so far. I think everybody has got to start again. I think we’re all starting from the same starting point, or at least I hope we are anyway. I should think I’m no different to anybody else. I feel very lucky to work under him. He’s won a lot of trophies and we’re all excited to see [what he can do]. We want to do well in this competition and, as I said, he is a serial winner so I imagine we will be looking to win the FA Cup and finishing in the top four of the league

[Fines as a way to punish racism have been criticised by football figures, with Rose stating that such lenient sanctions would do little to really impact real change] Obviously it is a bit sad. But when countries only get fined what I’d probably spend on a night out in London what do you expect? You see my [former] manager [Mauricio Pochettino] get banned for two games for just being confrontational against Mike Dean at Burnley. But yet a country can only get fined a little bit of money for being racist. It’s just a bit of a farce at the minute. So that’s where we are at in football and until there’s a harsh punishment there’s not much else we can expect

[Danny Rose says Wherever Mourinho goes he wins trophies] I’m not sure that Mauricio did [prioritise the League and Champions League]. Whoever we played, Mauricio wanted to win. Whatever team he put out, he fully believed that team could win. It’s no different with the manager now. He’s a serial winner. Wherever he goes he wins trophies, that’s a fact. Whatever team he puts out [against Boro] will be a team he fully expects to win and it’s obvious the FA Cup is something he has an eye on. The top four is harder now but when [Mourinho] took over we were 12 points behind [Chelsea] and we got it to three. We maybe took one step back but we have shown we can close the gap
[When they suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to table-topping Liverpool] It felt like one of the better performances we had over the Christmas period. Everyone’s gutted that we weren’t clinical enough to take one of our chances. What hurts the most was that it was just a case of a lack of concentration from a throw-in. We managed to sort of control their world-class front three.

[Newcastle have signed England defender Danny Rose from Tottenham on loan until the end of the season] It’s a great honour for me to be here. I’m so grateful that the manager has brought me in and I’m looking to repay him in every way I can as soon as I’m playing. For me, it’s really exciting that I can come here and have the chance to play in front of the Newcastle fans. Newcastle is one of the biggest clubs in England. I spoke to the manager last night and he told me there were 50,000 fans here at the weekend against Oxford. You can’t go wrong with that kind of passion and support from the fans, and it’s something I’m looking forward to

[Danny Rose claims Jose Mourinho didn’t give him the same opportunities at Tottenham as the rest of the defenders in the squad] I do feel I wasn’t given as much of a chance as everybody else in the backline. I did want to play for him. I knew after a month [of Mourinho joining] I was never going to play. It was difficult going out to train knowing I wasn’t going to play. It’s not worked out, but full respect to him and what he’s doing at the club. He took over with the club 12 points adrift of Chelsea [now in fourth place] and now it’s four. I have to be honest, I thought I would continue playing
[Rose also opened up on his struggles since recovering from knee surgery in 2017] I’d love to be the player I was three years ago when I was doing well. I thought I would return to become that player after the injury, but I had a rude awakening
[Rose will now do his best to help Newcastle fight for a top ten finish in the Premier League] I’ve been given a chance to play week in and week out. I want to play football again - with the Euros in the summer, I want to put myself in window. If I go to Newcastle and do well they may think that’s what’s expected of me. But if I don’t do well then they might think Tottenham were right to let me go. I have a lot riding on this, but I’m confident in my ability and I know I will do well

[Newcastle defender Danny Rose says it is bizarre for Premier League players to be criticised amid the coronavirus pandemic] When I woke up this morning, seeing comments from people at the House of Parliament, we sort of feel our backs are against the wall. Conversations were being had before people outside of football were commenting. All that’s happened is a discussion. I just got off the phone to Jordan Henderson about 20 minutes ago and he is working so hard trying to come up with something. It was just not needed for people who are not involved in football trying to tell footballers what to do with their money. I found that so bizarre.
[But Rose says he would be happy to donate some of his salary to health workers who are exposed to the disease] I can only speak for myself, but I have no problems whatsoever contributing any of my wages to people who are fighting this on the front line, and to people who have been affected by what’s happening at the minute

[Danny Rose has launched a furious tirade against plans to bring back Premier League football, insisting it should be far from a priority] The government is saying we are bringing football back because it is going to boost the nation’s morale. I don’t give a fck about the nation’s morale. People’s lives are at risk. Football shouldn’t even be spoken about coming back until the numbers have dropped massively. It’s bllocks. We’ll see. I’m supposed to be tested on Friday, so we will just have to wait and see. I didn’t even listen to the announcement [on Sunday] - no football until June 1 or something. I don’t even pay attention to any of that. I’m sad people are getting sick and being affected but football should be the last of things that needs to get sorted.

[Danny Rose warns Premier League stars are being used as coronavirus lab rats] I’m dying to get back to football. I know people are obviously going through this coronavirus pandemic a lot worse than me, so I don’t want to be here complaining about anything. But just off the fact people are suggesting we should go back to football, it’s basically like we’re guinea pigs or lab rats, that we’re going to go back to this phase and see if it works or not. I can just imagine people at home saying they [footballers] earn this amount of money so they should be going back. So for stuff like that where I just think ‘this is not worth the hassle’, I could be potentially risking my health for people’s entertainment, and that’s just not something I want to be involved in, if I’m honest with you.
I didn’t think too much to it and then I was having my breakfast the next day and saw Steve Bruce coming up on my phone. I spoke to him and he said I need to word things a bit better if I’m going to do things like that. He explained the measures they’re going to, to try and make everything safe, but obviously I’ve seen the headlines and I do - we do, as footballers and people in the public eye - we have a platform and maybe I could have worded what I said a little bit better. But I do feel exactly how you’re feeling, that six weeks ago [health secretary] Matt Hancock was saying footballers need to halve their wages and now six weeks later we’re needed to try to entertain people. People need to make their minds up: it’s one or the other

[Danny Rose says he believes former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino will eventually coach Manchester United] Without a doubt, without a doubt. Eventually, United. Even under Poch, he had a different culture to the British. It wasn’t that he didn’t understand it. You know the British like to have a drink, it was just something that he couldn’t get his head around
He wasn’t willing to compromise on that, either. Even after we beat Ajax in the Champions League semi-final and it was obviously the biggest night of our careers. On the flight home we weren’t allowed a drink. It was ‘no you’re training tomorrow, you’re up at 9’. It’s just one of those things. British managers do different things. Foreign managers, sometimes it’ll take them time to adapt or for the players to adapt to them. It’s something that is just one of those things in football
In the changing room and we went back out to the fans, for that hour I felt on top of the world. Then we got back on the plane and we were trying to have a drink and he wasn’t having it. He was like ‘No, we’ve got a game on Saturday’. The night was over.
I do fully respect what he’s done but at the same time with that Champions League semi-final we’d been together since we were 22 or 23, so for me that’s all I’d known for the past five or six years, you’d play and then get one day off if you’re lucky and that’s it, you’re grafting for the rest of the week.
So now I’m at Newcastle, you’re getting two or three days off a week if you win, so I’m thinking what’s going on here then? It’s a shock to the system. We’d only get one day off if we were lucky under Poch. Even in international breaks, he’d see the ones who would go away as having a holiday because training isn’t as hard with your national team. So if you weren’t in the national team you were getting beasted in training. You’d only get Saturday or Sunday off and then you’d get somewhere like Liverpool where they’re getting seven to 10 days off. We’ve been programmed a certain way in the last five or six years and going to Newcastle it’s different. I’ve missed playing for a British manager and I’m getting used to it again

[Danny Rose says Andy Robertson is a freak of nature & Europe’s best left-back] Andy Robertson looks like a freak of nature. I watch him play football and in every game he gives the same commitment. His consistency levels are extremely high. He is just brilliant. We played Hull four or five years ago at White Hart Lane and Robertson was playing for Hull, as was Harry Maguire. I wouldn’t have noticed Robertson at that time, if I’m being honest, but he then moved to Liverpool and he has been the best left-back for them. He’s been the best left-back in England and, maybe, Europe for the past two years. For me, now, he is the one I’m looking to catch, without a doubt. He is the best
I tried to watch the Celtic games in the Champions League when they were on the television. Brendan Rodgers said at that time that Kieran was one of the best in Europe. As soon as Brendan said that then I took an interest in him. I feel very sorry for him this season as he’s had a bit of bad luck with injury. I do rate the two of them very highly but Robertson is the best

[Danny Rose has revealed that Harry Maguire was a target for Mauricio Pochettino before the England defender joined Leicester City in the summer of 2017] Touching on Harry, we played Hull at White Hart Lane, and I think we won 2-0 or 3-0, I think Steve Bruce was manager, and straight away our gaffer was all over Harry. I think [Spurs] were in for him. Once Poch had taken a liking to him, I started to notice him straight away

[Danny Rose says Mauricio Pochettino had hoped to take Harry Maguire to Tottenham] I remember we played Hull at White Hart Lane [in December 2016] and we won 3-0. Mauricio was manager and the gaffer was all over Harry. I think they [Tottenham] were in for him. Once Poch took a liking to him I started to notice him straight away after that. It’s been a great journey for him. Training with him for England, you couldn’t get the ball off him. He’s so good. He fully deserves to be Manchester United captain
With Harry, we all hope his goals and his performances will merit a trophy one way or another during his career, but Tottenham means the world to him. We know that and when you see him disappointed, it’s just one of those things that when you’re on Harry’s team in training you win. It’s not a coincidence. You just don’t want to be on a losing side when you’re on Harry’s side, even in training. He’s got that aura that you want to do the best you can.
