[Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum speaks about one of his childhood interests before football] I wanted to be a gymnast when I was young, I used to do back-flips and all those things in the streeet and at home, but my grandma said it was dangerous and made me stop. Now my daughter is doing gymnastics and I’m a little bit jealous of her because she is doing all the things I wanted to do when I was young. I had to stop and concentrate on football but I’m happy about that now

[Gini Wijnaldum still on a high after Liverpool’s Champions League final success] Yeah, I like to fly a lot. That’s my life

[Wherever Wijnaldum goes, people want to talk. Not about the Reds’ Premier League misfortune, not about the Netherlands’ footballing renaissance or his holidays or his family] It’s been a big difference to previous summers. I’ve had a few more people congratulating me and wanting to talk. Everywhere you go, every day, everyone reminds you, everyone wants to speak about it. They all want to talk about how we won it six times, and how they felt. You can’t avoid that

[Still, Klopp is not averse to a little look back himself, as Wijnaldum reveals] He sent me a video over the summer! It was one which starts where we lost the final in Kiev, and it shows our progress from there. It was good to watch and remember all those moments and those games

[Wijnaldum admits that feeling, beating Tottenham at the Wanda Metropolitano and then celebrating in front of 500,000 fans in Liverpool the following day, was like a drug] Now we know what it’s like to win something. And not only that, to celebrate with the city as well. It’s not just the team and the people who work here, it’s the supporters, the city. It felt like the whole world was happy when we won it! You get a feeling that you are not only doing it for yourself, you’re making so many people happy and that’s probably the biggest drug for a player. It changes your life, because you’ll always be a Champions League winner. There are a lot of great players who didn’t win that trophy, so it’s special. It’s the biggest one you can win as a club, because you are competing with the biggest clubs. All around the world, everyone is watching the Champions League. When I speak to people, they don’t tell me how disappointed they were not to win the Premier League, they want to talk about the Champions League. But we wanted to win both! That’s how we look at it. But winning the Champions League, yeah, you will always be remembered as legends

[In terms of the Premier League, Liverpool’s focus remains sharp. Manchester City, champions in each of the last two seasons, will start the new campaign as favourites once more] I think it’s about consistency. In the Premier League, it is so difficult to collect the amount of points we did last season. And City did it twice! So that’s the challenge we have. But we have a team that can do it, and we want to try and do better than last year. Hopefully we can bring more titles to Liverpool

[Liverpool already house the PFA Player of the Year in Virgil van Dijk, and have three big contenders for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award too] He deserves to be in the running. But I also think Sadio Mane and Alisson Becker do too! I don’t know how many Golden Gloves Alisson has, but it’s a lot! It’s difficult to say. I don’t know what they are looking for, it’s an award for the best player, but a lot of the time the best player is the one who won the most, so we will see. But any of those three would deserve it

[Georginio Wijnaldum has heralded the strength of Liverpool’s squad and does not believe their quiet transfer window should be assessed yet] We have to see. We have a good group now who have played together for a few years, we’re already strong. When you sign players, sometimes they need time to settle in. I had it, [Andy] Robertson had it, Fabinho had it, [Naby] Keita had it. There’s no guarantee when you sign a player that he can play immediately the way we want him to play. But we have to see. People will say, ‘You needed a signing’ if the season does not go well, but if it goes well, they will say we did not need a signing. We will see how it goes. We have players who were injured coming back from injury, so the squad is already bigger and better than last season

I like it. They push us to be even better, we push them to be even better. I think that’s why last season we both had a lot of points. When you look at each other, you know that you have to perform because otherwise the other team will walk away [with the title].

[Gini Wijnaldum has revealed how Jurgen Klopp gave a pre-Champions League final meeting in Cristiano Ronaldo underpants prior to their 2018 clash with Real Madrid] We saw he was wearing the boxer shorts of Cristiano Ronaldo. He did the meeting with his shirt stuffed inside his ‘CR7’ boxers. The whole changing room was on the floor laughing their heads off. That really broke the ice. Usually in those situations, everyone is serious and concentrated. But he was relaxed and made this joke. He’s done hundreds of jokes likes that. If you see that your manager is really confident and relaxed, it will have an effect on players. He is a father figure in those things for the players. With his jokes and his body language, he takes the pressure off players

[And Wijnaldum talked about the special relationship the former Dortmund boss has with his players] When I have problems I can always go to the manager. I can text him a few days before and ask if he has a minute for me. He is always curious about what it is. ‘Is it something bad, good? What is it?’. He always tries to empathise with the other person, to feel what they’re going through. He is a really special man for me. I see him as more than a manager - a really good friend. Everyone asks me how he is as a person. ‘Is it fake what he does on the sidelines?’ No, that is how he is. Even in training he is the same. That’s how he is.

[The former Newcastle United midfielder also gave an insight into how Klopp managed to keep his players focused during their remarkable 2018-19 campaign] On the inside, he is totally the same as before. He is always honest and makes sure that we don’t want to fly. He tries to keep us with both feet on the ground. At the beginning of the season, when we were winning games, he was sometimes angry and mad at us because we were not 100 per cent focused. He was like, ‘Do everything right, work right, put in 100%. That is what brings us here. Every slip will let it go, it can be the other side again.’ He kept us with both feet at the ground.

That is Jurgen. It was a good thing for us to see. He didn’t change after the good results that we had. As players, you sometimes have that much confidence that you say, ‘We will be all right.’ He always says, ‘You can’t manage what happens on the pitch, but you can prepare us as well as possible’. Now, when we slip a little bit and think things will work with 95% or so, he is there to knock us down. ‘One-hundred per cent - or you have nothing. We have to do it that way, that is what brought us here. That is how we have to continue.’ That’s one of the reasons why we had a good season last year. Everyone stays focused, even in training

[Georginio Wijnaldum says Liverpool’s experience is helping them win games early in the season] It is encouraging that we are getting results without being in top form. It is important, especially at this time of the season, that you collect as many points as possible because basically, you have to improve during the season and that is what are trying to do and what we want to do. But it is also important to collect as many as points until you are at your best. It is really important that we have won the game at Southampton. But I don’t think you always see a team play well for 90 minutes. We just have to make sure we win games. Basically it doesn’t matter how you win games. You just have to learn and use that experience that you have because we won’t play a game 90 minutes counter pressing or everything goes well during a game. You have to use your quality and your experience and still try to win the game. That is more important than playing well over the whole 90 minutes because that is really impossible

[The Gunners have looked promising in parts of their wins over Newcastle and Burnley, with many tipping them to return to the top four this season] It is difficult to say who will be up there. We must see how the season goes for them but also us. Everyone says we will finish first or second but we must still show it and perform at the end of the season. We have to make sure we deal with the situations and give everything we have. They made some good signings but they were always a good team

[Georginio Wijnaldum has said manager Jurgen Klopp consulted him about signing Virgil van Dijk before either player had signed for the club] Before I even joined Liverpool I had a meeting with Jurgen and during our talks he asked me about Virgil van Dijk. I had always rated Virgil very highly and my exact words to Jurgen were, ‘He is going to make the defence a lot better’. So I was not surprised when Virgil won the UEFA Best Player award ahead of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. I actually expected him to win it. Virgil has had a blinder of a season and has been so successful. Nothing about him surprises me any more

[Wijnaldum conceded he was angry and disappointed that he didn’t start in the Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona. He did come off the bench and his two goals inspired an historic 4-0 win, turning round a 3-0 deficit from the first leg to see his club through to the final] With the manager, it is more or less hate and love. I am sure he has the best interests at heart with every player in the squad. But sometimes you are so involved in a match and the manager is still chasing you. Then you just boil over sometimes – and, in my case, I do get angry with him. I still don’t know if what happened against Barcelona was his real plan. But that night I was so angry and so disappointed that he did not start me. Looking back, we can say things worked out all right. We will never know how it might have gone if the manager had started me

Winning the Champions League has given us all peace of mind. Now we know what it’s like to win the biggest trophy of them all – and we just want to keep going from here and add even more titles

[Georginio Wijnaldum says Liverpool’s Champions League triumph last season gave the squad peace of mind heading into the 2019-20 campaign] Winning the Champions League has given us all peace of mind. Now we know what it’s like to win the biggest trophy of them all – and we just want to keep going from here and add even more titles. But Jurgen Klopp is not putting extreme pressure on us to win the Premier League. He does not tell us, ‘Now you must win this or that trophy’. He is very relaxed. He did not do that during the past season, either. His idea is that we get the maximum out of every individual every single day that we are together. And then we will see where that brings us at the end of the season. Just look at the list of world-class players who have not won the Champions League during their careers. It contains more famous names than you would think – and it tells you that it is really special we have won it with Liverpool

[The Netherlands international has also been tipped to win the Ballon d’Or later this year and Wijnaldum is not surprised that his fellow countryman is being singled out for individual awards] I was not surprised when Virgil won the UEFA best player award ahead of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. I actually expected him to win it. Virgil has had a blinder of a season and has been so successful. Nothing about him surprises me anymore

[Former Magpies star Georginio Wijnaldum admits Steve Bruce’s side made life tough for Jurgen Klopp’s hosts, with Liverpool made to work for another convincing victory] We were lucky that the goal [Liverpool’s first] came quite soon after theirs and after that it was not as difficult as before. [Georginio Wijnaldum has saluted Liverpool’s battling qualities, with the match-winner at Sheffield United admitting that 1-0 victories of that kind would have been beyond the Reds a few years ago] We didn’t start the game well. In the first half we slowed the game down too much and that’s why they could stop us. It was not the best game we had but we won. A few years ago we would not have been able to win these games. It could be a really important three points. It’s really good to keep collecting the points

[Gini Wijnaldum insists Liverpool are ready to send their fans on another Champions League rollercoaster ride] What happened in the past is always in the past. We created great memories for ourselves [last season] but it is not something we should think about. Of course it gives us confidence if you are in a situation like that but it is a totally different Champions League campaign: different games, different situations, different teams. We just have to make sure we are ready and not think about last season. Yes, that is a great memory but we have to look forward to making it even greater and reach the final again. Not looking back but looking forward

[Now, though, it is about taking care of business, and after four successive away games – at Napoli, Chelsea, MK Dons and Sheffield UnitedLiverpool are ready to enjoy some home comforts once more] It will be nice. We all know how Champions League nights are so we will look forward to that. I didn’t know it was four away games, us players must be busy! We just see the fixture and think: ‘We have to play there!’

[Georginio Wijnaldum is eager to point out that the Reds do not consider themselves to be already champions] We don’t want to think we are already champions. That would be a really wrong thing to do. I’m sure the manager will keep us with our feet on the ground and say that we just have to think about ourselves, and try to play good and try to give 100 per cent every week. We just have to do what we did before and look at ourselves and not look too much to other teams because we don’t have influence on other teams - we can’t control the performance of other teams. We just have to make sure we are ready for the games that are to come and to make sure we are ready and try to have good results because we know that it can change quickly. Then at the end of the season we will see where we stand

[Wijnaldum: Liverpool can match Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ with undefeated campaign] It is possible. Nobody knows how it’s going to be. We have had some luck up to now, but we have also put a lot of hard work in. We don’t think about the fact that Arsenal did not lose in that season. We just try to give everything in every game

[Though United have fallen on hard times Wijnaldum believes that any club, no matter the size, is capable of experiencing a similar rough patch] It can happen to anyone. It could happen to Liverpool, or Manchester United. It has happened to big clubs in Holland, but I don’t really think about it. I concentrate more on Liverpool

[Gini Wijnaldum believes Pep Guardiola’s comments about Liverpool diving were strange but says he is looking forward to Sunday’s crunch clash with Manchester City at Anfield] I heard what he said [about Sadio Mane’s diving] He gave his opinion about us and the way he thinks. Nothing bad in that. That is his opinion. In his opinion Sadio is a diver. What can you say about that? I didn’t see the Villa one back [when Mane was booked for diving], so it’s difficult to give my opinion on that, but I can’t remember Sadio doing it before. Now we have VAR as well, so…How many players of ours have had a yellow card for diving? Sadio was the first, I think? So to say that we are divers, I think it’s a little bit strange. That’s my opinion

[Wijnaldum was in no mood to speculate on how Sunday’s game might play out] Maybe they will play different. I think it suits every team if it is a more open game, but it is also a sign of respect if they play differently

[Since the start of 2019, they have come from behind to win valuable points in seven different games] That’s something we changed in the last few years. A couple of years ago we were struggling to win games like we win them now, but we grew and learned a lot during the years. We just created that thing that we know we always can turn things around. We always have that feeling, to stay positive. That’s also because of the results we had until now, and the way we came back. Our mindset is different, which is quite good, because we keep doing the things we want to do in a game. Normally if you are 2-0 down, your body language is going to change, but we still have that mindset that we can still turn it around. It’s because of the belief we have in each other, but also the results we have had. If it just happened once, it’s not the same. But it happened over and over. We know we are a team that can always come back from difficult situations, but of course we don’t want to let it go that far!

[Asked if it was more physically and mentally demanding to win games that way] It’s hard, really hard. You have to go until the end, and you have to go even when you don’t physically see a positive outcome. Especially at the end of the games, you just keep going because you think you can. Your body is tired and so you battle with your body like ‘no, we have to go, we have to go on’. It’s really hard, but in the end you enjoy it more if you win that way than if it is easy

[Georginio Wijnaldum admits Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Manchester City was wild and hectic] What a game! I think the way the game started was quite difficult - they play a long ball to the right side and I think they ended up with two corners, so at that moment you have to be awake immediately because otherwise, you can concede a goal. But I think we did it quite well and next to that it was quite wild and hectic! But after the first couple of minutes, I think we played good football [and] scored two goals. In the second half, we came out of the dressing room, started good and scored another one.

It was 3-0 and then at the end, because we were tired, it was a little bit difficult and they were getting better in the game and this resulted in one goal for them. But at the end we played a very good game. They just grew in the game [after Liverpool’s flying start] and we tried to stop them with all we had. That’s what we did but you could still see that they have a lot of quality, so we did everything but sometimes they still came through our press. That’s the kind of team we were playing against but I think overall we did a tremendous job by playing the way we played in there and we can be proud of ourselves

[For many, the title is now Liverpool’s to lose – even with two-thirds of the season to come] It’s always good if you have a gap between the teams behind you [but] you can see with last season that it means nothing because if you don’t perform and get the results you need to get, they can close the gap really quick. So what we have to do is just focus game by game and give our all and then at the end of the season, we will see where we are. But I think we just have to enjoy the moment we are in now, because we worked hard for it, and try to carry on

[Georginio Wijnaldum says the Liverpool squad are united in their ambition to win the Club World Cup] I’m really looking forward to playing in the World Cup for teams because back in the day I saw the Champions League winners play in the competition. What I like the most is that if you win, you get a badge on your shirt. That’s something you want to achieve.

That’s what makes this competition so special. First of all, it’s really difficult to qualify for a tournament like this. Second of all, you play against other teams who also had to do a lot of work to come into this competition. That’s why we have to enjoy it the most - because you never know if it’s going to be your last time in a competition like this. And, on the other side, if you want to play in this competition as much as possible you need to win the Champions League. It also gives you something in the Champions League.

If you win the Champions League trophy you can play the World Cup for teams, so it also gives you another reason to want to win the Champions League. You go into football to make history and that’s what we want to achieve with the team we’re playing in. We have a good team. We are friends, we work hard for each other. We have a team that when we look back later we can say we achieved things. This will definitely be one of the moments when we look back, we can say we achieved something big

[Wijnaldum added on the importance of maintaining a winning mentality as the campaign progresses] It’s really important because it gives you a lot of confidence. When you are losing games, pressure will come on the team; when you win games, instead of pressure, confidence will come. It’s always important to win games, or even play good games, because that will help you get more confidence

[Liverpool and Netherlands star Georginio Wijnaldum believes the only option in the face of racist abuse in a football match would be to walk off the pitch and not return] It really hit me on a personal level. I never expected anything like this to happen in the Netherlands. I’m really shocked. It did happen, unfortunately, and the way people have talked about the incident really hurt me. It’s a problem in society. As a player, you can’t really change anything about it. But I still think that players should try and support each other. It’s a problem in society and a problem that should be solved by our politicians.

I hope that there will be severe punishments. This really can’t happen again. It’s not just the racism to the player from Excelsior, but I also saw someone doing the Nazi salute in the stands. When I saw that, I thought, ‘What is wrong with you if you do something like that?’. Our ancestors fought for us so we can live freely. If people still perform the Nazi salute, that’s utterly disrespectful. That just can’t happen. We can’t allow that in the Netherlands. That’s what I think. There have to be severe punishments.

I think the KNVB did well with their statement, saying that they will look into the matter and see what happened. But I think it’s really despicable what Den Bosch did. I might not be allowed to say things like that, but I don’t care any more. I think we need to see very high fines. I heard that they want to install cameras to find out who the culprits are. The punishments need to be so severe that nobody even thinks of doing something like this ever again. We want to play football to enjoy ourselves, we want to entertain our supporters. We don’t want to see things like this happening

[When asked what he would do if it happened in an international match] I walk off the pitch. I’m going for sure. I’ll never accept that. We talked about it with our guys. Look at our squad. We are one. We don’t look at skin colour. We play for the Dutch team, we play for this shirt, we play for the people. We play so we can entertain the people; we play so we can be at a big tournament such as the Euros again. We are so happy about qualifying and then this happens a day later. It’s so surreal because those people that did this will be cheering for us if we perform well at the Euros

[Wijnaldum says Fabinho loss would be ‘big blow’ to Liverpool’s ambitions] It is a blow, a big blow for the whole team. Of course also for him as a player but there are situations you have to deal with. I think during the years we have had a few blows, injury-wise and we just have to show we can deal with the situation

[Wijnaldum replaced Fabinho against Napoli, and performed well in the role of deepest midfielder] I have played it last season. You think I am ready? We will see. We just have to show that it doesn’t affect us. During the years we had some difficult injuries and difficult positions, last season when we didn’t have a right defender and things like that, we just have to deal with it, so we will see

[Wijnaldum, like Klopp, was left frustrated by Liverpool’s inability to get all three points against an aggressive, well-organised Napoli team] Frustrating, of course you want to finish it early but that is the situation. It comes to the last game so there is nothing we can change about it any more so what we have to do is to deal with the situation and try and get a good result. Champions League games will always be difficult. It also depends how you go into the game. The game against Salzburg at home, we started really well and we made it difficult for ourselves after we scored the goals. Of course they get the credit but we didn’t do the things we did in the beginning so we will see. It is definitely going to be a tough game but it will be tough for both teams

[Wijnaldum calls on Liverpool to ‘finish’ the job & ensure Champions League progression] Sometimes you need those kinds of things – a goal or some momentum to come better in the game. We started well in the second half, we were the better team in the second half but it didn’t result in a lot of chances, or a lot of big chances, and that’s something we have to work on, in circumstances like this to still create chances. We tried to fight until the end of the game and that’s what we did. We were happy that we could score the equaliser. Now we have to finish it against Salzburg

[Wijnaldum has echoed the words of his manager in saying that a crucial clash will be taken seriously] In this case, you mustn’t be too comfortable because we know how good Salzburg can be. We know how good we can be if we are concentrated and give 100 per cent. Every game is different. What we have to do is give everything and try to make the best of it. Hopefully we’ll get a good result there

[Holland stars Gini Wijnaldum and Frenkie de Jong make powerful stand against racism just days after racist abuse of striker Ahmad Mendes Moreira in the Dutch second tier] It came very hard personally, I never expected this to happen in the Netherlands. I was very shocked

[When asked how these growing issues should be tackled] Hard fines. I read somewhere that there should be cameras everywhere. The punishment must be so harsh that no one will get it to do that. If you play football you are not waiting for that at all. That match should not have been completed. If it were to happen to us, I would walk off the field

This is a social problem, it is something for politics. Action must be taken against this type of practice. And not only against racism

[Georginio Wijnaldum says Liverpool should have done even better against Tottenham after their 1-0 victory over the north London side] [It was] really tough [physically] but also because I think we made it really tough for ourselves in the second half. I think first half we played a good game but we gave sniffs away and gave them a little bit of confidence.

Because it was only 1-0, they had the confidence they could equalise and in the second half you know they will come out and try to equalise. That’s what makes it harder – and also because we didn’t do what we did in the first half.

I think that was the reason why it was really tough. Normally, it’s always tough when you play against Tottenham but I think we made it tougher than what it was. It was only 1-0 so they had the confidence to try to score a goal. We had to do better with the situation. At the end we defended well but in a few bits in the game we gave chances away and we were lucky they didn’t score

It is [incredible]. But we also work really hard to keep this run going, we have a manager who keeps both our feet on the ground and to work even harder. Every day when we are training or playing a game, we try to do it better than we did before. We always strive to do it better

It depends on what the club wants and how the situation is at that time. We will see. [Anfield], it’s like home. I’m just focusing on bringing this season to a good end and that’s the only thing I’m thinking of

Since I’ve been in the Premier League I’ve played the season without a winter break but I also know, before I came to the Premier League, how good it is for a player to have some rest. After the rest, you can go again. Your body is more rested than if you keep on going, so that’s a good thing. As a player you want to be involved in every game there is but you also have to deal with your body and sometimes your body just says that it is not the right choice to do. You just have to see how the situation is but if the manager decides that the younger players are going to play the game then we should accept it

[Georginio Wijnaldum says Jordan Henderson is a phenomenal player] He’s a phenomenal player, not only as a football player but also as a captain. Since I came to Liverpool I got to know him. He is the best captain we can have for this team. The way he speaks with the players and helps the players is the way you want your captain to be. He is a really good player. Even when he sits on the bench or is not involved in the game, he tries to help the team out. It’s good that he gets the praise now that he deserves because he played a really good season until now, played really good games and scored important goals. In the dressing room he is a really big player for us because of the way he approaches the team, talks with the team and helps the team go forward. We really need him

[Wijnaldum hailing the ability of Jurgen Klopp’s side to grind out results when required and keep a stunning unbeaten run going] Yes, but it’s also confidence. Because we did it so many times, we have the confidence that even if we concede a goal or during the game we don’t score a goal and we’re coming to the last minutes of the game, we still have the confidence we can score a goal. It’s both – but confidence is also a big part. We stay cool, we believe in the quality we have and we are always confident we can score a goal

[When asked about his contract earlier this week] What would I like? It is difficult to say. It depends on what the club wants and how the situation is at that time. We will see

[Wijnaldum hails Firmino is like an extra man for Liverpool] Bobby is the kind of player that makes it easier for the whole team. With him on the pitch, you play with an extra man. So you play with 12 players on the pitch because he works so hard. And he scores goals, he lets other people score goals.

He’s a defender, he’s a midfielder, he’s a striker, he gives assists, he has everything.

I played one time as a striker and that’s when I saw how difficult it is to do what he does, because that’s unbelievable. And Bobby as a person is a wonderful person. You can laugh with him, you can talk with him, I’m really happy to have him as a team-mate.

[Another key component in Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League title-chasing side is commanding centre-half Virgil van Dijk] Really good, also because he is a really funny person. I worked with him at the national team, played with him, so I already knew which kind of player he was. And I knew that when he came he could transform the back line, but also the line in front of him. So the midfielders. The way he puts everyone in their position helps the whole team, so he’s a leader in that way.

[Georginio Wijnaldum says Klopp makes sure everyone keeps their feet on the ground] Nobody [here] will say that it’s difficult to have the focus on one game at a time. You just want to do it as well as possible. We also have a manager who puts us with both feet on the ground when we have a moment when we’re not concentrated on something like that. We also have a team that wants to be as successful as possible. For that, you need 100 per cent concentration and give effort every time on the pitch. Off the pitch, when you need treatment and those things, everyone is busy with doing as good as possible. That’s what helps us and we help each other and try to keep each other sharp. I think that’s why we have the run we have right now because we are just focused on doing even better than before

[Wijnaldum is expecting another testing examination against the Hammers] It’s going to be a difficult game. When we played away it was already a difficult game – they dropped deep, they made it difficult for us to play our football. I think they’re going to try to do that again. Every situation is different, we just have to deal with the situation we will be in at that moment

[Liverpool’s Wijnaldum plans to finish career in Netherlands] In the future I see myself playing for Feyenoord, PSV or Sparta again. Sometimes I look at Sparta (his first youth club) and think ‘it would be great to spend my last years as a professional there’. In the Netherlands I played for three clubs and still have a good feeling about all three of them. But you can only pick one.

I can’t promise anything though. I learn from other players too. [Ruud] Van Nistelrooy once promised to come back, but changed his mind over the years.

It’s unique what I’m experiencing right now. You want to play at the highest level and win trophies, like Clarence Seedorf. It’s my dream to play as long as possible. Like him, Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] or [Cristiano] Ronaldo. I want to play at a high level until I’m 38

[Wijnaldum added on the Reds’ bid to secure a first league crown in 30 years] It seems like we’re going to be the champions. When seems to be the remaining question, but a lot of crazy things have happened in football

[Liverpool star Wijnaldum says he’s become a more ‘complete player’ under Klopp’s stewardship] My development since I came to Liverpool has been good. I have become more of an all-round player. I was used to playing in a very attacking role and only in attack. Since the World Cup with [Louis] van Gaal [in 2014], I have had a more controlling role in midfield and that went well. After that, I didn’t play that role again, at PSV or Newcastle. When I spoke with Klopp, he saw me in a more defensive role, where I needed to be an all-rounder. It’s not always easy as I am used to attacking, but it has helped in my development. I am a more complete player now than I was when I arrived

The manager has had a big influence on me. He has brought the club back to where it used to be and he brought his vision to the club, and I have to say his vision fits the club. The players adore him, of course, because he cares about the players and he is a good coach, a coach who improves his players and he is a great person to work with. We have also had a lot of personal conversations and he has become a really important person to me. He knows a lot of things about me that other coaches don’t know. We have a really good player-coach relationship, as well as on a personal level. He is an important person to me in general

[Liverpool’s Wijnaldum reveals reason behind shirt number] Number five is a really special number for me. It was my lucky number when I was young but also because my favourite player, Zinedine Zidane, was playing with number five. I was really happy that I could start my professional career as number five. Since then I’ve played with number five at Newcastle and when I came to Liverpool, the club basically kept number five for me. I was really happy with that

The toughest opponent I ever played against was Andres Guardado. There was a game at the World Cup against Mexico, it was really hot and he was my opponent that day. It was a really hot day and he just kept running! It was really difficult for me, and besides that, he’s also a really good football player. On the ball, he was really great. It was a big thing for me to stop him. Because it was so hot, it was more difficult than normal, but at the end, we still won the game

[Georginio Wijnaldum admits Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson can be annoying] I’ve played with a few players who have great leadership, I have to say Kevin Strootman and Jordan Henderson were, I think, above the other ones. Mark Van Bommel was also a good leader and a good captain, but out of the three of them, I have to chose Henderson. It can be annoying [when he is motivating players on the pitch], but if you think about why he’s doing it, it’s only to help you as a person and the team so if you think about it in that way, you always appreciate it so we are really happy with the way Henderson is

[Henderson is not the only role model that Wijnaldum is looking to take important lessons from at Liverpool] James Milner engine is unbelievable. I see it in the games and in training, the way he plays and how fit he is. I hope I can reach that level too. He’s non-stop, I have to say when you play against him, it’s really tough because Milner is the type of player who will never stop giving everything so you always have to be 100 per cent concentrated and have to give every time 100 per cent otherwise you will lose from him. He’s a really tough competitor

[Liverpool returns for training in small groups] I’m really looking forward to that because we all love football, we all love to play football, so we want to play as much as we can. Also, the moment and the situation we were in was quite good, so it was really hard for us [professionally] that it stopped immediately after the game against Atletico Madrid [where Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League]. In two months we didn’t do something and we are happy that we can start again

[Wijnaldum himself has suggested he would like to end his career back in the Netherlands] in the future I see myself playing for Feyenoord, PSV or Sparta [Rotterdam] again
