[Harry Maguire on his journey from England’s third tier to being a regular in the Three Lions line-up] To play in League One in every game when I was 18 was massive for my development. It’s something I’m very proud of. I have great memories and it was a great experience. If it didn’t happen for me back then, I probably wouldn’t be where I am now

: 2019 07 16 What does it matter to Manchester United fans if Harry Maguire costs £80m rather than £40m if it gets their club the man they trust to do a job for them at centre-back for the next five years? The club earns so much money from so many avenues these days that it cannot really be said that big signings have that much of a direct knock-on effect on ticket or subscription costs.

[Harry Maguire has called for Manchester United to turn Old Trafford into a ‘fortress’ this season after thrashing Chelsea 4-0 in their first Premier League game of the 2019-20 season] It is a great start for myself and the team. We rode our luck a bit first half but second we were much more ourselves. It is the first game at Old Trafford, so I think there were nerves. We gave the ball away in dangerous areas. We moved it nicely second half and our front three are so dangerous on the break. We knew there were only two clean sheets last year here. We need to make it a fortress

I felt good. I’ve only had three or four days with the lads. I am going to get fitter and better

[Southampton (1) vs (1) Manchster. Following Saturday’s 1-1 draw with 10-man Southampton at St Marys, Maguire lamented another performance that he felt warranted a better result] It’s another game where we’ve deserved to win. We’ve created the majority of the chances and we’ve dropped two points. The start of our season has been like that. We deserved to win at Wolves and then we conceded two shots against Palace and they scored two. We can definitely improve, especially on the ball. We gave the ball away far too much. We were too sloppy and we need to improve on that and show arrogance and be confident on the ball. We’re Man United - we want to control games. There were spells where we didn’t control the game, and we got punished

That’s how we should play all the way through the game. You’ve seen the confidence of the players when they went down to 10 men. They seemed like they wanted the ball, everyone wanted to create a chance. We did enough in that 15 minutes to score a goal. We’ve got to be more clinical. We had numerous crosses, numerous balls across the box, we just needed to stick one in. We’ll keep working hard, keep improving

[Maguire was taking in a first meeting with Leicester since completing a record-breaking £80 million summer move to Old Trafford] It was tough playing against Jamie Vardy. I’ve played with him for two years and he is a top player who can terrorise defences when he is on his game. We knew it was important to get the win, especially after the international break. We have to build on a solid base and we want to keep clean sheets, especially at Old Trafford. We are always going to score goals with the attacking talent we have. We could have kept the ball better but we defended well. The boys who came in looked sharp and fit and a big well done to them. We have games coming thick and fast and I’m sure the manager will utilise the squad, so be patient and take you chance when you get it

[Harry Maguire has said his relationship with centre-back partner Victor Lindelof will only improve as they play more games together] You have to realise partnerships are built on playing games and we have only had five games. We will get better. I will understand him more and he will understand me more. There probably will be times when we can do better but we will continue to work hard on the training pitch and that is really important to build relationships around the pitch - not just me and Victor. It is really important, as a defence, to keep a clean sheet. At Old Trafford, we need to keep clean sheets to win games, like in the first game of the season [against Chelsea], if we keep a clean sheet, we win. We have enough talent in attacking areas to score goals. So, as a back four, as a team, we are really pleased with that

I’m really happy and not just because it was against my old team and the pressure of the game and the people talking about the battles during the game. It was just really important that we got the three points today. It wasn’t our best performance by a long way. We were sloppy on the ball at times and we didn’t keep the ball in their half long enough. But we will improve and we will work hard to improve. It was important that we were solid defensively. They are a good team, and they move the ball around well, but I think we deserved the points in regards to chances created

[Harry Maguire is working on becoming more vocal but is not concentrating on the prospect of becoming Manchester United captain] It’s something I still want to improve on, my leadership qualities on the pitch and, especially, my talking. I want to demand more from the players, demand standards, but I’m obviously not concentrating on that at the moment. I am fully focused on improving the team and getting this club back to where it should be

[Solskjaer’s men lost 2-0 at West Ham last weekend to make it six goals conceded in those six matches] My game will improve the more I know them and the more experience I have of playing with them - the position they take up, the way they want to receive the ball and the areas in which I receive the ball. So I know where my team-mates will be, without having to look and try to find them. It will improve and I’m sure I’ll improve throughout the season, playing with my team-mates more and improving my relationship with Vic. We will improve as a team as well and we’ve got to improve

[Harry Maguire would like to become Manchester United captain one day. when asked if he would like to skipper United] Definitely. It’s something I still want to improve on, my leadership qualities on the pitch and especially my talking. I want to demand more from the players, demand standards, but I’m obviously not concentrating on that at the moment. I’m fully focused on improving the team and getting this club back to where it should be

I’ve played a large amount of games for my age and quite a few in the Premier League as well. I do think I have a lot of experience and I can help our team, which is so young at the moment. We can help each other through as there are going to be plenty of good times, but probably some not-so-good times as well. We’ve got to learn and improve and make sure the good times become more frequent. We’re working hard on the training pitch at the moment and are going to keep striving to improve

[Harry Maguire does not consider a record-breaking £80 million price tag to be a burden but wants to be given at least five years at Manchester United before judgement is passed on his value] It’s the long term, that’s what the main thing is. In five or six years, judge me then - whether I have been a success at this club or not. I do believe and am really confident that, in five or six years, I’ll be a success and I am sure we’ll have many, many good times here. We need to keep improving as a team, not just me as an individual. I feel, if we improve as a team, I’ll be a success too

[The former Sheffield United, Hull City and Leicester star remains focused purely on football matters] It doesn’t bother me at all. It’s something that I can’t affect. Leicester wanted to keep me and they are in a great position as a club. Manchester United wanted to buy me and they came to an agreement. It’s probably a good deal for both parties and it’s something now where I want to concentrate on my football

[Asked if he and his team-mates were low in confidence heading into the game and replied] Yes, maybe. We bring our club football into international level. It was a difficult game. Don’t get me wrong, we started sloppy. We took the lead in the game but we didn’t deserve to. In the second half we controlled the game a lot more than the first half but we gave them a sloppy goal to win the game. We do need to improve on that. We were not at our best and got punished for it

[While the defender conceded that it takes time for the squad to jell, he urged his team-mates to adapt to the demands of international football] You are wanting to develop partnerships. Sometimes in international level you can’t really do that. You have players who aren’t playing for their clubs so they don’t get selected, and you have players that pick up injuries. You’ve got to adapt. That’s one of the tricky parts of playing international football. Every camp you’re normally playing alongside [someone new] – you don’t want to be – and need to develop new partnerships. But listen, there’s no excuses. [The defence] need to be better. We need to be better going forward. We need to be better on the ball. And we certainly need to be better at keeping the ball out of the net

[Brabec’s equaliser came from a corner less than five minutes after Harry Kane opened the scoring, while Ondrasek capitalised on Jordan Henderson’s attempted pass to Rose] The first goal was a set-play and we probably need to tighten up on those. We’ve been really good over the last year or so at defending set-plays. The second goal has come from us being a bit too open when we were trying to build up from the back and maybe it was at a stage of the game when we shouldn’t have looked to do that. We could have consolidated the point and tried to play in their half a bit more. So maybe better game management would have helped us, at worst, draw the game 1-1

[Maguire trusts in UEFA racism protocol ahead of Partizan clash] We will trust UEFA to follow their protocol. Sofia was sickening and something I don’t want to be part of again. [Harry Maguire intends to be part of Manchester United for a long time] I’m enjoying being part of such a big club. I’m going to be part of this club for the future - I signed a long-term contract here, so I knew I was coming in straight away and aiming to bridge the gap to the top two [in the Premier League]. I’m looking forward to progressing in the future and I want to be part of that

[He has only previously taken in one game in Europe] When you sign for a club like Man United, you want to play in the biggest games possible. Playing in Europe is another challenge. It’s something I’m looking forward to, something I’m relishing. I want to play in the biggest games with the biggest pressure and that’s why I signed for a club like Man United, one of the biggest in the world. I’m looking forward to challenging myself under the lights in European football

It’s not nice when you’re not winning away from home, so it’s something that we’re working on. We’ve got four tough away games now and we’re looking for victories in those games. Hopefully, we can kick-start that with a win [in Europe]

[Harry Maguire was honoured to captain Manchester United for the first time in their 1-0 Europa League win over Partizan Belgrade, while laughing off a moment of confusion over the pre-match coin toss] It’s a massive honour to lead the team out, especially such a big club like United. I’m really proud, but more importantly I’m happy we got the clean sheet and the three points. It was really important to get the away win - it’s been a long time coming. We weren’t at our best and it was scrappy at times, but we always knew our first away win would be one we had to grind out

2019 11 04 Retrieve

[Harry Maguire admits Manchester United need a bit more quality in the final third] It wasn’t a bad performance, but it lacked quality. We felt like they had a couple of chances but we dealt with them pretty well as we were pushing bodies forward, but we’ve got to show a bit more quality in the final third. We got into some great positions. We found balls through the lines. I can remember Victor [Lindelof] playing quite a lot of balls through the lines, especially in the first half, and in the second. So we’ve got to show that little bit more quality

Four away games in 11 days, or whatever it is, is tough for the boys, but no excuses, we felt good physically out there, we felt good mentally, and were going in with confidence, and I think it showed at the start of the game. We’ve got to now get our heads down, look forward to Thursday and then another big game before the international break where we must bounce back

The first 20 minutes we were right on top – we’ve got to score in that period. We had numerous chances and the quality in the final third wasn’t good enough to create that real clear-cut chance. Then they probably came back into the game at the end of the first half, and it’s an awful time to concede – probably the worst time to concede – just before half-time. It’s disappointing that we huffed and puffed in the second half. We had them pinned back and after three away games we were confident coming into this game and, in the end, we’re really disappointed

[Harry Maguire insists there are definitely no cliques in the England squad despite the altercation between Raheem Sterling and Joe Gomez this week] No, everybody mixes. I think you’ve seen how good the unity in the squad is over the last couple of years. It’s been a good two years and the group has grown together. We continue to keep on growing and that’s really important. No, definitely no cliques. We all share tables and share jokes and laughs together

[Maguire is hopeful, should the Three Lions secure their progress, the home crowd can be a big factor next year] It would be really special to play in a major tournament and walking out at Wembley would be something that you dream of. People say it would give us a little advantage as well. We know that the crowd get right behind us at Wembley and the support over the last few years – especially since I’ve been playing – has been unbelievable. It’s a big game [against Montenegro] and one that we’re all looking forward to and we feel prepared for

[England’s hopes at the Euros would also depend on improved defensive showings] Obviously, we’re coming off the back of a clean sheet [in a 6-0 win in Bulgaria], but we’ve conceded a few sloppy goals recently. I’m not proud of it and we’re working hard on the training pitch to make that better. We know the firepower we have in our squad. We’ve got to a stage now where we’re scoring near enough in every game, and we’re creating problems for other people’s defences. So my job and I’m sure all the rest of the defenders and the keepers as a group, we’ll try to shut the shop up and start keeping clean sheets a lot more regularly

[Harry Maguire has revealed the classy gesture made by Manchester United eight years before he moved to Old Trafford in a record-breaking £80 million transfer] It was just after half-time when it happened. I had a clash of heads with Ravel and actually got knocked out. It was the only time I’ve been knocked out in my career, touch wood. It was a nasty blow and I was in hospital overnight. Obviously it was disappointing to go off and not see the end of the game when the medals and trophy were presented. But then someone got in touch [from Manchester United] and checked I was okay. They sent me a Man United shirt, and just said: ‘Good luck for the future, you’re a good, promising young player, keep your head down’ and so on. It was a nice touch from the club and just shows what a classy club United is

I’ve been really lucky, to have had a lot of experience in terms of playing games. I played 50 games for three or four seasons at Sheffield United, every year. That’s something I really love doing. I love playing. For me, the best way to learn is by playing games and I’ve been fortunate, in terms of the managers I’ve played for, that they have all picked me to start, especially in my younger days when it’s harder as a young centre-back to get your chance to go and play

[Harry Maguire is confident that he can justify £80 million worth of faith at Manchester United] I was in a situation where there was a long-term contract at Leicester, they wanted to keep me, Manchester United wanted to buy me, and hopefully it turns out a good piece of business for both clubs. That’s my main aim now, to prove my worth to Manchester United, not just individually with performances but as a team. I want to improve this team and get it back to where it should be

[The commanding centre-half added on having a 1999 Treble winner calling the shots] He’s been there and done it, scored the big goals and won the big trophies, so we need to try and follow in his footsteps. It’s great to play under him. He’s been great since I’ve come in and it’s an exciting time for us players to work under someone like Ole

[Maguire says he want Sheffield United to win every game - apart from against Man United] It means so much, the club that gave me the chance of fulfilling my dream of becoming a professional footballer. I owe them a lot, I go back and support them whenever I can. It’s the first result I look for when I get off the pitch. I want to see them win every game they play, apart from when we’re playing against them. A fantastic club and it’s great to see them back in the Premier League where they belong

[Maguire acknowledged he is unlikely to get much in the way of support from friends as he visits his old club] It’s nice to go home and see my friends and family. I probably won’t get to see them much this weekend, not before the game anyway, probably after the game – and hopefully I’ll be the one smiling with my friends and not them!

I’m sure some of [my friends] will be supporting Sheffield United, but my family will be supporting Man Utd and hoping we get the three points

[The Norwegian boss remains in the hunt for a European spot after a pressure-filled start to the season and Maguire has thrown his full support behind a man under the microscope] He’s been there and done it, scored the big goals and won the big trophies, so we need to try and follow in his footsteps. It’s great to play under him. He’s been great since I’ve come in and it’s an exciting time for us players to work under someone like Ole

[Man Utd have lowest points total in 31 years] As a team we are improving but we want to improve a lot more. To not win games at home is disappointing. We huffed and puffed but we need to do better and Wednesday [home to Spurs] gives us a great opportunity to put that right. We were poor after their first goal. It knocked us and we were edgy and nervous. To concede straight away after going in front its disappointing. We dominated for large parts of the second half

[Harry Maguire says Manchester United are heading in the right direction despite being held to a 2-2 draw by Aston Villa on Sunday] As a team, we are improving but we want to improve a lot more. To not win games at home is disappointing. We huffed and puffed but we need to do better and Wednesday [at home to Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur] gives us a great opportunity to put that right. We were poor after their first goal. It knocked us and we were edgy and nervous. To concede straight away after going in front it’s disappointing. We dominated for large parts of the second half

As a defender especially, it’s frustrating. We haven’t really conceded many chances or goals prior to the last two games and then we’ve conceded five. And the attackers have scored five and we’ve ended up coming away with two points. It’s disappointing, especially as a defender. It’s something that we’ll work on but it’s not like we were conceding lots and lots of chances today. Jack scored a worldie and the second goal has come from a set-play, which we need to tighten up on

I felt every time we went forward in the second half, we were going to score. We caused them numerous problems. Anthony Martial had a great chance, sometimes the ball doesn’t go in the back of the net. That’s what happened today, but, like I said, the first half wasn’t good enough. The second half was better but it’s disappointing to draw at Old Trafford

[Man Utd captain Maguire aiming for Champions League push] The top four is in sight but we need to look after our own results and keep trying to get the three points, and keep improving. We’ve got another big game next week against Everton. We need to keep winning games, we’ve won back-to-back games against Spurs and City

It was a great start from the lads in the first half, the front four were frightening and, when they’re on their game like that, they can cause any defence problems. Over the last month or so, I feel like I look at the forwards and think they’re going to score goals. At the start of the season we didn’t really score more than one goal in a game but now, it’s a few games in a row where we’re back to scoring goals. They’re a big threat, they’re top talents and I think it’s all coming together now. We’re not getting carried away - it’s a big three points, a special win, one for the fans and I’m really happy for them. We just keep moving up that table and keep chipping away

I feel really proud to lead the boys out at the Etihad and to get the three points. It was an important game for us. I think the last two games, no one can question that we’ve deserved our victories. We knew they were going to come strong and throw everything at us. I think we held on well and I don’t think they created too much in the second half

[Harry Maguire claims there was a clear foul on David de Gea in the build-up to Everton’s goal in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United] We deserved more. Dominated the game, really. We conceded a goal that was a clear foul. We were disappointed to concede that sort of goal but we bounced back in the second half. It [the Everton goal] was a clear foul. People will say David de Gea has to be stronger but it is a clear foul. He jumps in on him and David was impeded

[Manchester United academy graduate Mason Greenwood salvaged a point for his team against Everton, earing the praise of his captain] He is a goalscorer. [Harry Maguire was at a loss to explain Manchester United’s struggles against opposition in the bottom half of the table] It’s something we can’t really put our finger on. We’re working hard in training and that’s all we can do, coming into these games prepared as well as we do for the likes of Manchester City away. It’s disappointing. I always think when you play these games against the so-called lower opposition in the table that the first goal is crucial, so big, and we had chances to get it.

[When asked about the discrepancy in United’s form] Well, you’ve got to earn every single point, every inch on the pitch, and we didn’t deserve that. We were too slow, too many touches in the first half, too many passes that went astray and we didn’t create enough chances. Obviously, we could have had one or two goals ourselves, it’s about taking them when we get them. We could’ve scored the first. I can talk about it all day long – we didn’t [take our chances] and now we have to face the fact that we’ve got two games against Newcastle [United] and Burnley coming up that we’ve got to improve on

2019 12 27 Retrieve

[Maguire calls for Man Utd to rediscover consistency and clean sheets] We want to get back to clean sheets; we’re working hard to get clean sheets. We’re not conceding many chances in many games, but it’s something that we’re going to work on. We’re going to improve

[When asked if consistency will be needed for United to maintain a top-four push] That’s the key. You’ve got to put performances together, put wins together. It’s really important that you go on runs in this league. We haven’t really found that consistency to put three, four, five wins together. It’s something that we need to work on. We’re a young group, we’re learning, [and] there are positives to take from today but now we’re focused on Saturday

[Maguire is confident that United will be able to negotiate their way through a congested fixture list unscathed] We’re a fit bunch. The boys worked tirelessly in pre-season and this is what it’s for. We’re fully focused now on Saturday and that’s how it should be. It’s tough, there’s no doubt about it. A 90-minute game in the Premier League takes a lot out of you, but it’s the same for every team. There’ll be a few teams out there that will probably get that extra day’s rest. But Burnley have played today as well, so we’ve got to make sure our mentality is right going in to the game.

[Harry Maguire says Man Utd can beat anyone on their day] We maybe could have been better on the ball in the second half and killed the game off, but it’s a big three points for us. We’re a team who haven’t been conceding many chances, but set-pieces and other basic things have been letting us down. It’s nice to come here, get a clean sheet and get the win. On our day we can beat anyone, but we’ve been far too inconsistent this year. We didn’t perform at all at Watford, so it was important to come here, do the basics well and keep the clean sheet

We could have been more clinical. Their centre-halves were heading away every single ball that came in and it wasn’t easy, but we did well to get the win. He [Martial] was brilliant again today. For a forward, there’s nothing better than scoring goals. Hopefully it keeps his confidence high and this can continue until the end of the season

[Harry Maguire admits Manchester United deserved to lose against Arsenal, with the Red Devils going down 2-0 at Emirates Stadium] We started the game well. In the first 10 minutes we created two good opportunities where we should have been a little bit more clinical. And then from there until the half-time whistle they were on top. They played with more aggression, more intensity and they pressed us better. So we’ve got to go back, work hard, improve. In the second half, we huffed and puffed and created some chances, but the key period was from the 15th minute until the half-time whistle and we weren’t good enough

It was disappointing to go in 2-0 down at half-time because we should have weathered the storm, especially not conceding from a set play. When we’re not playing great we’ve got to do the basics well and doing the basics is heading the ball out of your box and keeping the ball out of your net. We had chances in the second half, but we deserved to lose. We weren’t good enough and we’ll improve for next week

Everyone around the club will have seen the [Chelsea] result and maybe thought it was an opportunity to move [closer to] the top four, but no, we are just looking after ourselves. We’re not really looking at other results. We need to put runs together. We need to go on runs, winning runs, and I think if we do that, we’ll get in the top four. If we don’t find the consistency, like we haven’t done in the first part of the season, then we won’t. We’ve got to challenge ourselves, to pick ourselves up and definitely improve on that first half

[Harry Maguire says Marcus Rashford is starting to get the goals he deserves] I’m pleased for him this year that he is starting to get the goals he deserves, and hopefully he has not stopped yet. He has a few more in the tank from now until the end of the season. I can remember one of the first sessions when I went to train with England, he really stood out to me there - his ability on the ball, his technique. He has everything to go and have a career at the highest level

[Maguire thinks a top-four finish is still possible if they can put a decent run together] We have played two good games and one bad game, and it has not been good enough in terms of that. If we put a few wins together on the bounce, we will have every chance

[Harry Maguire says it is a great honour to be named Manchester United captain] It’s a massive honour to be the captain of this prestigious club. It’s a great feeling for myself but the hard work continues and I’ll keep doing the best I can, on and off the pitch, to make this club successful

I’ve only been here five or six months and to gain his trust in that amount of time is obviously a great feeling for myself. It gives me confidence going into games and the way I put myself around the place. Off the field and on the field is especially important as a captain and it’s something I’m looking forward to but, like I said, the main thing is being successful as a club during the time I’m here

It’s something I want to do and something that I’m really proud of. I want to play every game. Obviously to play every game in the Premier League is tough on your legs and tough on your mind, because there are so many games, especially around December, and you see people picking up little injuries. You’ve got to play through these little knocks sometimes and get your head down and get onto the pitch and battle through it. It’s really important for myself – I want to be on the team sheet in every game, if possible

[Harry Maguire has absolved Nemanja Matic of any blame for Manchester United failing to reach the Carabao Cup final] It is tough to create chances here. They are a good side and they have proved it over the last five years. At half-time we were in the perfect position. We wanted to stay in the game until the last 20 minutes, when we knew we could create momentum and pressure, like we did at Anfield [against Liverpool]. It is hard enough to get the ball off them when it is 11 v 11. We obviously lose Nemanja, who was excellent on the night, so there is no blame on him, but it was difficult when we went down to 10

Yeah, it is really important. We have one last big push before the lads can put their feet up and have a little rest, which I do feel we need. I think you saw in the second half that we looked a bit tired in our pressing. It is one last big push, we need a big result against Wolves, we need to come out fighting and put on a good performance

[Harry Maguire admits Manchester United have been poor from set-plays this season] We’re keeping a lot more clean sheets than we were at the start of season and we’ve never really been a team which has conceded a lot of chances

We’ve been poor from set-plays with our defending and we’ve had a couple of great goals scored against us from outside the box, but we haven’t really been having games where David De Gea has had to make five or six saves, apart from maybe the Carabao Cup second leg against [Manchester] City, when David was brilliant. It’s a partnership that’s building and I think we’ll get better and better, and start keeping more clean sheets like we have been doing recently

[Harry Maguire says he did not intend to hurt Michy Batshuayi after he collided with the Chelsea forward] I know I caught him and I felt he was going to fall on me and my natural reaction was to straighten my leg to stop him. It wasn’t a kick out and there was no intent. I think it’s the right decision. I knew I’d caught him but that I had no intent to hurt him. It was just a natural reaction. I apologised to him and it was nice that the referee saw sense

It was a solid performance. We knew we had to get the win to close the gap. It’s a big three points. This season we’ve been far too inconsistent. We’ve let ourselves down when the pressure has been on to break teams down. We’re not getting carried away and the pressure is on to get three points

[Maguire found the net 66 minutes into the match when he rose to meet a Bruno Fernandes corner] It’s been a long time. I knew it was a matter of time before I scored one and hopefully there are many more to come

[Harry Maguire says Rio Ferdinand took the philosophy of defending to another level] I’ve always looked up to two centre-backs really: John Terry and Rio Ferdinand. [They were] two centre-backs who when I was growing up were playing week in, week out, winning big trophies, winning big games and playing for England as well. [They were] the main centre-backs for England. I think Rio took the philosophy of defending to another level. John Terry was always good on the ball. He had the range of passing, left and right foot, but I think Rio took the philosophy of you do have to start bringing the ball out from the back, stepping in and committing players. He was really great to watch and from my era that’s the person I’d probably say made me open my eyes and think that’s what you need to be a top, top centre-back in terms of you’ve got to start helping your attackers as well. Like I’ve said, the main thing is defending but the bonus of playing through the lines and playing good passes to start attacks is important too

The best thing is just to be calm and composed and trust your ability. A lot of dribbles start with good defending, in terms of intercepting passes, but I can manipulate the ball quite well, especially for a big lad. It’s something that I’ve always had as part of my game. I do like to dribble the ball out and start attacks off. It sets the tempo for our team. [Rio] probably did it most out of anyone, and it was quite unusual at the time, but he really stood out when he did it

[Manchester United captain Harry Maguire said that Bruno Fernandes had been instrumental in the club’s recent good form] You can see what Bruno has brought since he has come in. He has a big personality and he has an aura about him

Defensively we were solid and it should have been more than 1-0 in the first half. In the second half we dug in deep, defended well as a team and deserved the three points. Winning games brings belief. We believe we can push on from this. With the ball we can do better

[Harry Maguire says Man Utd have been sloppy, not all over the place] We need to build on clean sheets. It is a foundation. If we keep a clean sheet, it is a cliché, but, if you keep a clean sheet, it gives you every chance of going on and winning the game. Eight in 10. Defensively, all season, we have not been a team that has been all over the place and conceding numerous chances. We have never been that team. We have conceded sloppy goals at sloppy moments. Set-plays, long-range shots, special goals but, lately, we have cut it out. We have been defending set-plays and I can tell you that is a big bonus. It is the key to start picking up good results and that is what we have done

We don’t want to be a team that gives up possession really easily. In terms of the game, the way it panned out when they had the ball, we as a back-line, I didn’t feel under threat. I didn’t feel there was any need for me to start telling the full-backs or centre-halves to start jumping more, or trying to start putting pressure on higher up the pitch because we were 1-0 up and didn’t feel under threat in terms of them creating chances. But we don’t want to be a team that doesn’t have a lot of the ball. We want to be a team that controls the game, especially at home. It is something we can work on, on the ball. But they created pretty much nothing and it was a solid display.

We dug in deep out there. Don’t get me wrong - we can play better than that. We know that. We can play better on the ball especially. Without the ball, we pressed them really well, the midfield and forwards ran tirelessly for the team and didn’t give them a sniff to get their head up and create a chance. The back-line defended our box really well. But, with the ball, we can do better and we know we can do better. However, it is a big win against our rivals. It is nice to do the double over them but, most importantly, it is a big three points to close the gap on where we want to be at the end of the season

[Harry Maguire is setting a three-pronged target at Manchester United] Ever since we started in this competition the gaffer has reiterated how important it is. We wanted to win the group, we won the group, we wanted to go through against Brugge and we took each game really seriously. It is an important competition and we know it is a way to get Champions League football, which is what we are all after. Obviously, the most important thing is getting in the top four of the Premier League for the Champions League, and we know that. So it is a competition we want to win, we want to win the FA Cup as well. We want to stay in these competitions for as long as we can

You get through in the Europa League but you are still a long way away from the final and it is still a lot of games away. It is a big test, but it is nice that we are getting players back in and around the squad. The squad is looking more in-depth now and we’re not picking up niggling injuries like we have this season. We are getting players back. Paul and Rashy are still out at the moment, but I am sure they will be itching to get back involved with the lads. It is a big test, but we have enough squad depth to cope with it

[Maguire on potential Manchester United wage deferrals] First and foremost every club will be different. I’m having weekly discussion with the club about how we want to go forward and how we want to monitor it and that’s as much as we can say on behalf of our club. We keep monitoring the situation weekly, and every week we will evaluate and see where we’re at and see if we need to do anything regarding pay cuts or deferrals. Every club will be different and I’m sure every club captain will be speaking to their club’s with regard to that

[Harry Maguire admits challenging for top-four finishes is not enough for Manchester United] You can see from the start of the season that we look a lot more like a team. You can see where we want to be and where we want to head. I knew when I first came to Manchester United that Ole had said loads that it’s a building process but we will get to where we want to be. I can see where we are heading and the style that he wants to implement on the team. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of aspects that we still need to improve to get to the top, where we want to be. We don’t like challenging for the Champions League spots, we want to be challenging for titles. We know there is still a lot of improvement to be made, but we feel like we’re on the right track and I’m sure eventually we’ll get there

Playing for Manchester United, every game is so big. I knew before coming to the club having spoken to ex-players – I spoke to Jonny Evans a lot, who recommended an unbelievable club – it’s more than a club. You have seen the way they have acted during this crisis, how classy they have been, it’s more than a football club, it’s something that works well in the community.

It’s been a great run of form for clean sheets. Sometimes you can play in games and play better when you concede one or two goals but [some games] you manage to keep a clean sheet, David [de Gea] makes one or two saves and everyone is praising the defence. One thing we have shored up on at the moment is set-plays. You look back at our record before this run of clean sheets, defending set-plays we were up there with one of the worst in the league. If you do that and aren’t scoring from them at the other end, you aren’t going to stand a chance in getting where you want to go because they are such a big part of the game. It’s just gelled together more. It’s a new back four. We have got a settled back four

[club captain Harry Maguire says Bruno Fernandes has shown himself to be a leader at Manchester United] First and foremost it’s a great privilege to be Manchester United captain. I have to look after my own game, making sure I’m performing at my level and then look after the team. I think it’s important as a captain that you put the team before your own performance, but you have to be on the pitch to implement that. Around the place, we have got a number of leaders now. Bruno has come in and shown himself to be a leader. We have got a leadership group with a lot of experienced pros so we are all trying to help. It’s something that I want to make sure this club goes forward and gets back to where it should be

In the six months where I worked with Ash, he was brilliant as a captain. He had great authority around the place, he had great respect. I didn’t expect Ashley to move on in January, but I wish him all the best and I did learn a lot from him in that short space of time

He’s been brilliant since he’s come in. He’s been brilliant off the field around the training field. He’s hungry, he wants to win. You can tell he’s been brought up with that attitude. He’s just given us that little bit more life, a bit more creativity in the middle. It’s a start. There are lots of aspects of his game that I’m sure he’ll want to improve and I’m sure he will get better for this club. We have got Paul [Pogba] to come back as well, who will lift his game even more. There is good competition for places in that central midfield now

[Harry Maguire has expressed his belief that Manchester United will need to be mentally strong to return to the top] As a Red, our toughest opponent, probably, is ourselves. I would say that, at times this year, as a team, we have probably let ourselves down by being a bit too inconsistent. Not just for a full game but during games. There have been times when we’ve been so good in games and then we’ve come off it a bit and been punished. So I’d say our toughest opponent is ourselves. We need to be mentally strong. We are a young group but we don’t really want to use that as an excuse. We want to be young but play mature. That is where we have really picked up in recent weeks

I have joined this club because I want to win trophies and I want to get silverware. When I look back on my time at Manchester United, I want to make sure I have some trophies in that cabinet.

[Harry Maguire has said Manchester United team-mate Marcus Rashford is the most talented player he has ever played alongside] I’ve always spoke so highly of Marcus when I was with him at England. I can’t speak highly enough of him. I think he’s going to go on to have an exceptional career. I think as a club, you should have a captain and rely on him but you need to spread the onus of the leadership in the group. Marcus is there and he battles through every game, obviously he’s missing through a bad injury at the moment but he’s battling hard to get back and he’s very rarely missing games. He’s always wanting to make himself available. I think you can see around the place and on and off the field as well, he’s excellent with his charity work, which is great to see. On the pitch, like I said, he’s amazed me. He’s the most talented player I’ve ever played with and I’m sure he’s going to be a wonderful player for this club

[Manchester United team-mate Harry Maguire says De Gea is the best Premier League keeper of the last 10 years] Having played under him I’ve realised how good of a keeper he is. I’ve watched him over the years in the Premier League and for me he’s been the best Premier League keeper in the last 10 years or so. To play under him this year, it’s been great to see how he goes about his business in training each day, he’s an excellent trainer

[He added on Rashford] I’ve always spoken so highly of Marcus when I was with him at England. I can’t speak highly enough of him. I think he’s going to go on to have an exceptional career. I think he’s going to go on to – I don’t want to put too much pressure on him – be a wonderful player for Manchester United, as he is now

[Maguire impressed with Man Utd’s training return] It’s been a strange few months, but it has been a protocol which the club has followed. It seems such a safe environment. It’s our first day back today, but it seems so safe and everyone is respecting it so well, so long may that continue and I’m sure no one will have any problems. There is a lot less people at the training ground when we go in. Today [Wednesday] I was in a group of four, working with one coach, so not many people. You’ve got a lot space, big areas, not going really close to anyone, but the main thing is getting the work in and it was a tough session, [then] go home and now I’m relaxed and it’s all in the bank and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.

The safety, it seems really well organised. We all got tested before we came in, so everyone in the changing room has a negative test. Every morning we get our temperature taken before we get to the training ground, so obviously they’re checking the temperature. We all have an app where we fill in to see if we’ve had any symptoms throughout the day. It’s such a safe environment and it’s an environment which is there to be built on. At the moment we’re all just taking it phase by phase, step by step, and that’s the only thing we can do at the moment. I think it’s just taking it day by day. Like I said, the main thing is getting the physical work into our legs and it helps you mentally as well: being at the training ground and seeing familiar faces

Well, first and foremost, it’s the first step. I think at this moment in time we’ve just got to take it step by step. We’re in phase one, let’s get through this phase without any troubles. I’m sure with the way things are set up and organised that should be done and then hopefully we can move into phase two and go from there. It’s step by step, it’s day by day. It’s only the first day, but it’s been a good start for me. To see the organisation has been really pleasing

[Maguire sends Man Utd team-mates warning ahead of crucial Sheffield United fixture] It was a crazy game. We were really poor in the first half. No doubt about it, it was one of our poorest first halves of the season. We managed to find ourselves two goals down but then got in a great position and looked like we were going to win. They didn’t really create any chances in the last 20 or 30 minutes of the game and then, obviously with the last kick, they found space and it was a good finish from Oli McBurnie. In the end, it was a tough result to take but I don’t think we deserved any more on the day than a point. We weren’t good enough and know we have to perform better in this game

It’s disappointing not to play in front of your fans but, one day, they’ll be back. And, when they’re back, I am sure the atmosphere is going to be even better and louder than it normally is at Old Trafford – if you can beat that. We’re going to miss the fans. Home and away, they follow in great numbers and the support is incredible. But we know they’re going to be in front of their TV screens, watching us, shouting us along, and the main thing is we want to put smiles back on their faces.

Maybe it does take away the home fans making the atmosphere uncomfortable for the away team, but it’s still about the 11 players who turn up on the day. There is enough talent in our squad to go and beat anyone. We’re fully focused on ourselves and are not looking at it being home or away. We’re just seeing every game as a chance to try to get the three points and perform at our best

[Harry Maguire hopes he is not the only one playing for the badge at Manchester United] One thing for sure is, every time you put a kit on with the Manchester United badge on it, you don’t need much spurring on. You know how big the club is, the history it has got, and it’s such a big, iconic club. If you can’t get motivated to win a game of football for this club then you’re in the wrong sport, to be honest

[Maguire on Sheffield United] It’s a fantastic football club and one I’m really proud of because of how well they’re doing at the moment. I am really thankful for the opportunity they gave me to start my professional career, and the faith and trust they showed in me at a young age. I’m really happy with how they’re doing and theirs is the first result I look for after a game with United. Hopefully, they can finish one place below us!

[Harry Maguire has got his sights set on becoming the first outfield player to complete every minute of a Premier League campaign for Manchester United since the 1994-95 season] Yes, it’s going to be hard work with games coming every three days or so. But, no, I’m in a great position – physically and, mentally, I’m fresh and ready to go. I hope, with every player coming back, we don’t want anyone to pick up any injuries due to the amount of games we have coming up. Fingers crossed for all players out there – we don’t want anybody picking up injuries so there are fully fit squads and everyone going full throttle at it, playing football. It’s what we love to do. I’ve seen, on Sky, the fixtures and how many games are being shown every day really, so it’s going to be a great time for the fans to sit back and watch. They will be disappointed they can’t go to stadiums to support the lads, but it’s the best we can do at the minute. [FA Cup win would mean everything] It would mean everything. I joined this club to win trophies, it’s a great tournament and hopefully we play a lot better in the semi-final than tonight. It was a difficult game and we made hard work of it. We weren’t at our best, but that’s what happens in cup games sometimes. We had a tough game in the heat on Wednesday but we made changes so that shouldn’t be the reason. I can’t really put a finger on it at the moment, we’ll have to watch it back and see. We played a little slow and went through the middle a bit too much, we should have gone wide a lot more. We’re in the semi-final and that’s all that matters

[Maguire is also hoping that his match-winning cameo in front of goal pushes him to score more often in United colours] I’m always pleased when I chip in, especially when it’s a big result in the last minute of extra time. I’m a bit disappointed that I’ve only scored three goals, it’s something I’m working on and looking to improve between now and the end of the season and hopefully I can carry that into next season

[Harry Maguire rued his side’s late lapse in concentration] We’re disappointed as we had control of the game and had numerous chances to kill it off. We weren’t at our best. There are areas that we need to improve on, but we did enough to win the game. A set play has killed us in the end. The second half was a bit of a slog and we weren’t good enough on the ball. We brought pressure onto ourselves and we didn’t get the third to kill it off. Going down to 10 men was unfortunate but hopefully Brandon is OK. We’ve been really good on set plays during this run, but they’ve managed to get a flick on at the near post. We’ll have to look back at it to see what went wrong. We’re disappointed at the moment but we’ll dust ourselves down and try to pick up another three points
