[Why does Mikel-Hiddink work so well for Chelsea] Since the new manager came in we have been working really hard and as I said before, the atmosphere has changed a bit. The players seem more relaxed and as we are working hard in training, it is now starting to show in the matches that we play

[John Obi Mikel on England’s chances at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia] I think they have a very good chance of going all the way because the youthfulness and energy in this team … you can feel it. I think the pace in the team, you can feel it. I think the England team have a good chance

[Nigeria vs Guinea. Nigeria’s quest to claim a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title started in inauspicious manner as they struggled to get over the line against Burundi] We were lucky to get the goal. We need to try again to win the next game. We need to try also to win the second game and hopefully qualify from this group as quickly as possible - and then look forward to the next stage.

[John Obi Mikel has announced his retirement from international football after helping Nigeria to third place in the Africa Cup of Nations] Egypt is a country where I’ve started and have finished my national career. In 2006 I played my first official championship for my country. [The] 2019 Africa Cup of Nations marks my last championship for national team with Super Eagles. My national career started in 2003 [at the] under-17 World Cup and I’m grateful for the national team for placing me on the world arena and giving me an opportunity to show my skill and have an incredible national and international career.

At the age of 32 it’s time for me to retire from the national team and let the youth take over, who’ve done an amazing job securing a bronze medal at AFCON 2019. Thank you to all my Nigerian supporters and to my country for all the trust, support and love you’ve shown me over the past 15 years. Mikel am out!

[Abdulkadir Omur is only 20, and has made just two league appearances this season, but Mikel sees an unlimited potential in the youngster] When I saw him in training, I said to myself, ‘Maybe a Messi will not come to the world, but this child is very similar to Messi. I know Messi very well because he always had the duty of defending himself in the matches we played against Barcelona and Argentina. Abdulkadir creates a piece of Messi watching with every move he makes

[Hazard has seen former Chelsea team-mate John Obi Mikel pick him out as the laziest player the Nigerian midfielder has worked with] Hazard has an incredible talent. Maybe not as good as [Lionel] Messi, but he can do whatever he wants with the ball at his feet. He didn’t like to train hard. While we were working he was waiting for us to finish training just standing there. But on Sundays he was always man of the match, it was unbelievable

[Lampard played a key role in Chelsea’s miracle in Munich in 2012 - so can he upset Bayern again?] We were the first London club to win the Champions League, and forever we will be the first players to win the Champions League for Chelsea. Those memories will never go away. I can remember the night in Germany, it was absolutely crazy. Doing it for the fans was absolutely amazing

[Former Chelsea star John Obi Mikel calls for Turkish season to be cancelled amid coronavirus outbreak] There is more to life than football. I do not feel comfortable and don’t want to play football in this situation. [John Obi Mikel blasts Trabzonspor over coronavirus handling and says he won’t return] They [the club] were really upset about the whole thing. I was told to meet with the president in his office one-on-one. He asked me to take [the post] down. I told him I wasn’t going to do that. It’s my opinion. This is how I feel. We live in a free world. I have freedom of speech. I can express my opinion

I wanted to win the league too but at this point in time we have to think about what is more important: to save peoples’ lives. I want to help in any way that I can to defeat this virus. For us to be out there playing; I don’t think we are helping the global situation. I don’t feel it is right for us to play football. UEFA have postponed football. How come they are still playing in Turkey? It’s not right at all. But Trabzonspor were not having it - for me, they don’t care

I explained to the club that I needed to see and be with my kids. They were calling me every single morning, crying on the phone, wondering why their friends were not coming over for playdates, why they can’t touch anyone on the street. I knew if I came home, they’d be relaxed because they’d then know Daddy was home. I told the club, ‘OK, if that’s what you’re saying, I’m ready to give up my contract. To be with my family, to help the world to do the right thing - everybody needs to stay at home at this point in time’. Go back to Trabzonspor? No chance. Not with the way they have dealt with this situation. We have to look at ourselves sometimes in life and ask what is more important? Who do I want to be friends with? When I’m in trouble, who is going to look after me? And, the way they have dealt with this, I don’t see myself going back to Trabzonspor again

[John Obi Mikel has been surprised by the Liverpool star Mohamed Salah’s development since they played together at Chelsea] When Salah came to Chelsea, he was a young boy, but he had a nice personality and everyone loved him. He was very disciplined, we were close friends, talking a lot and joking a lot, he was a good friend. I believed in his development, but frankly I did not imagine that he would reach the quality that he has now.

[John Obi Mikel is now without a club, having been let go by the SuperLig team in March and he says he would be open to playing for a team in Egypt] Playing in the Egyptian Premier League? Why not? I am a professional footballer and everything is possible. I never ruled anything out
