[Sergio Aguero on Man City] The fact that an Englishman has an Argentinian as an idol is something very rare. I keep watching the goal that I scored against QPR and every time that I do, I get more emotional. I have no intention of joining another club. My plan is to stay here because City can measure up with Real Madrid, Barcelona and the likes. I am convinced that City will be at their level

[Sergio Aguero on No10 shirt] That No10 shirt has an owner. But somebody had to use it against Peru and Leo asked me to wear it. However, some people wrote to me afterwards and questioned what I was doing in the No10. I told them that shirt belongs to Leo. But I also want to win the World Cup and become the best player in the world

[Sergio Aguero on how he met Lionel Messi] I was about to turn 17. We were both called up [to the Argentina U-20s] for some friendlies. We were at the AFA training complex. I got sat at the table with him, [Ezequiel] Garay and [Lautaro] Formica. I was sat beside him. I looked at him but I didn’t know who he was. They were talking about some football boots. Then Leo sad, ‘They’re from the USA’. So I started thinking, ‘Where’s this guy from?’ I couldn’t resist and I asked him, ‘What’s your name?’ He said ‘Leo’ and I asked, ‘And what’s your surname?’ He said ‘Messi’ but it didn’t mean anything to me. I asked him again to see if it sounded familiar, and he again said ‘Messi’. He laughed and then we all laughed. Later I was thinking and I remembered that there was this kid everyone was talking about, who arrived at Barcelona when he was 12. That’s when I realised it must be him!

[Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero says Frank Lampard is his favourite Premier League top ten goalscorer] There are some great names in the Premier League top 20, but without a doubt, for his goal tally and lead over everybody else, Alan Shearer deserves to be on the podium. That said, there are a number of other players I admire. I’d say it’s a matter of taste or playing style because the Premier League has hosted many of the greats - and still does: Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney and Thierry Henry to name just a few. But as my personal favourite, I’d like to choose Frank Lampard, who in spite of not being necessarily a striker, stands among the top 10 goalscorers. That deserves praise

[Sergio Aguero speaks about team-mate and The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2016 nominee Lionel Messi] You only have to say hello to Leo to realise what a good kid he is. A lot of people don’t know that, because he doesn’t like to show it on TV or in public. He’s just an ordinary guy, though. He’s a good mixer and he cracks jokes just like any Argentinian. He gets on well with everyone and he’s as normal as they come

[Sergio Aguero speaks after their 3-1 victory over Watford about his dream of lifting the Champions League trophy with his club] The Premier League isn’t decided yet, but we are in a position of great strength to win it. It’s my seventh year here, I know a bit about the league and the most important thing is to win points in December, and we have done that very well, we have to keep it going in the matches that are left. I would prefer to win the Champions League over the league because it’s something City haven’t won yet

[Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero than wrapped up the win eight minutes from time, with the 31-year-old recalled after being dropped for the 1-1 draw with Paraguay] Luckily I was picked to start and luckily at times the three of us worked well together and we won. They’re quite tough opponents who counter-attack really well and we’ll try to be wise to that

[Nicolas Otamendi’s club team-mate Sergio Aguero, whose shots led to both Argentina goals, was similarly fired up by the prospect of taking on Brazil] We will try to do our best, as we have been doing, to work for the shirt. Argentina-Brazil is not played every day, especially in a competition like this. It generates a lot of expectation, not only in our country but in the world. We knew that this match was not going to be easy but we are happy to have gone to the semi-finals. Little by little we are getting better

[Argentina striker Sergio Aguero has hit out at the refereeing decisions during his side’s Copa America semi-final defeat to Brazil, claiming VAR was at fault for the Selecao’s second goal] The feeling is not good. The second goal was controversial. Juan Foyth stops thinking that the referee was going to stop. VAR worked very well until today - incredible! We do not pay attention to those things on the pitch, except for the blow that Dani Alves gives me from behind. I do not know why he did not check it. At the time, he [Zambrano] may not see it, and they told us that the VAR would become like a fifth referee.

It was all very new. We’re leaving with a good feeling. There are team-mates who have not previously had the chance to play in competitions like this, and they did very well. They are the future of the national team. Rest assured that this is going to change, and we need to give them confidence

[Sergio Aguero admits it wasn’t easy for him to meet the demands of Pep Guardiola during the early stages of the Catalan’s reign at Manchester City which sparked unwelcome transfer talk] Pep asked me to try a new way of playing and I had to adapt. It wasn’t easy but I had no choice. My game is totally different now from what I was doing five years ago at City. A total transformation. At that meal, we talked about loads of things. We kept postponing it and then when we finally met up, we talked about work for 20 minutes or so. The rest of the meal we spent chatting about other stuff, family, life in general

When Pep arrived I was a bit taken aback by his intensity, it wasn’t always easy to understand what he wanted. With Pep, it can feel like he’s putting a lot of pressure on you. You start thinking, ‘I’ve got to play well’ and only end up putting even more pressure on yourself. But I understood pretty quickly that’s just how he is. Pep is super intense. He won’t leave you alone for a second. There are no off days

[Sergio Aguero has admitted that Liverpool are the only team who can hurt Manchester City in the Premier League this season] It may be the Clasico for television, but for us, the Clasico, it’s the match against Manchester United.

Liverpool have always been a tough opponent. But when I arrived, the team we were fighting for the title was United. Initially, it was something strange in [Manchester] that City competes against United. Then there was Chelsea. But these last four seasons, Liverpool have become a very strong team and are now fighting with us to win the Premier League. They are the only team in the league that can hurt us. They have been chasing a new league title for years. Last season, they didn’t go all the way, so they are very motivated. This year, they are in front of us and will try to go to the end

[Asked about the trip to Anfield on Sunday] We know that this is a ground where it’s very difficult to win, but we’ll try to do it because it has been a long time since the club last won there. This will be a key match for the title

[Aguero opens up on adapting to Guardiola’s tactics as Man City target Champions League title] I had to adapt to another way of playing, worrying more about the goal and spending more time in the box. Before, I was a free player, in the sense that I did not have a defined position. With Pep, everyone plays a role and must respect his position. Mine is in the axis as the centre-forward. This is the area where I have to find myself. The first year [of Guardiola’s tenure] was not easy. Gabriel Jesus arrived and Pep bet on him. I continued to work and, when Gabriel was injured, I became a regular again and demonstrated that I could play that way. I ended up adapting

[Aguero also suggested that he now has a much better relationship with his manager] Everything is fine. We talk a lot. We have come to know each other since his arrival and everything is clear between us. I know how he is, and vice versa. When he selects me I try to do the best possible because I know that behind me I have Gabriel Jesus, an attacker who responds quickly and scores goals whenever he has the opportunity to be on the pitch. It’s probably a big problem for Pep when he has to choose who he will play

[Aguero also reaffirmed that City are desperate for European silverware this season, having crashed out to Tottenham in the Champions League quarter-finals last term. City were beaten 4-3 at home in the second leg in controversial circumstances, Fernando Llorente scoring a goal which some felt had shades of handball before a late equaliser for Raheem Sterling was ruled offside by VAR] We were close to winning the Champions League last season. We missed the semi-finals for a few reasons, because of a very questionable offside and because we were eliminated by an elbow. We have to keep fighting. The home and away matches are complex and there is also a lot of luck in this competition, but we will do everything once again to win it and, God willing, we will achieve big things

[Sergio Aguero says that it will be extraordinary to top Thierry Henry’s goal haul as the Manchester City forward closes in on the Arsenal legend’s goalscoring record] I’m happy to have scored so many goals and to be close to overtaking a great player like Thierry Henry, an incredible player who made history in the league. To beat it would be something extraordinary, a moment that will remain engraved for all my life. I will continue to work hard to achieve this as soon as possible. I especially want to continue to enjoy playing. I came to Europe at 18, and I am 31 today. The years have passed very quickly. I have little time left, so I try to enjoy it.

[Aguero was among those nominated for the Ballon d’Or award] My favourite for the Ballon d’Or has always been Leo. Of course, I’m happy to be one of the named players, but my favourite is Leo no matter what happens. I’m happy when he wins

I think they score because of our mistake. At the end, we suffered a little bit but I think we have enough chances to score more goals, but we are happy for the team. It’s the second title for us so we are very happy. We know they are a really tough team because they are really tall and strong, so we knew we could never give up. Happy for the team because it’s tough being here

[Sergio Aguero joked that he knows exactly how focused Guardiola is] He says when Riyad Mahrez or Bernardo Silva receives the ball just to move in behind the centre-backs, he is focused on that. It is fine, he’s fine. Always a good manager and crazy! I substituted him for Rash to make movements more in the space and we talked about the spaces he needs to attack and his mates didn’t find him. I like to be a crazy and a good manager at the same time. I love it!

[Aguero on the goal which made him Manchester City’s record scorer] I knew that by scoring one goal I would become the club’s all-time goal-scorer. The atmosphere was great, Napoli supporters were pushing really hard and it was beautiful, but at the same time I knew that the game was going to be tough. Obviously, I didn’t know I was going to score, but I tried until I got it. Napoli came close to scoring a third but Ederson saved it and then we scored on the counter attack. When Leroy got the ball I thought ‘ciao!’, but then he fell down, and the ball just came to me, and that was beautiful! I had very clear idea that I wanted to put the ball in the bottom corner, just inside the post. The goal was beautiful; I just had broken the record. That was a fantastic night. Destiny wanted me to score it. If you watch it again, Leroy falls down and the ball could have gone to Kevin or anywhere else, but it came to me. I was happy because of the goal and it was a nice one too!

Up until next year, it can be extended for two months or more. There are players who end contracts this year and if it is played in July, August or September, the clubs are going to have problems. [Aguero won’t rule out return to Spain as Man City deal ticks down] It’s difficult; I’m not thinking about what am I going to do. I know that every day my contract is closer to expiring. Probably there will be some offers but we’ll see. For now I just want to try to win the Champions League with City. That would be an incredible achievement for me and the club. But I haven’t really thought about what I will do after 2021. Also the current landscape makes things more difficult. If next season starts later, it will probably end later - maybe in August, something like that. And a lot of players have their contracts expiring in June - we’ll have to see how everything is sorted out. If contracts are prolonged I don’t know, we’ll see how it goes. I don’t rule out going back to Spain, or going to any country. I don’t know what I will do. Today I feel good and comfortable in Manchester. I want to do everything in the club in the best terms, then we’ll see

We would like to play the second leg against Real Madrid with people in the stands, for sure. It’s beautiful to see the crowd and the atmosphere, but if it’s played without fans it will be for the best for everyone. We took a good result from the Bernabeu. Obviously it won’t be easy, we’re talking about Real Madrid and we know that the game is not finished. We’ll have to be as focused as we were in Madrid. The thing now is to know if it will be possible to play. See if the competitions can be finished and decide the trophy winners. It would feel weird for everyone to decide who wins a trophy without playing all the games

[Aguero hails Liverpool defender as one of the best] We all know Van Dijk is one of the best centre-backs in the world. He’s strong, tall, has an incredible body. He’s very strong face to face, he plays with his body. Also, given he is so tall, he has those long legs. It looks like he isn’t fast but he is, because of his long legs - he can reach everywhere. Two steps from him are 50 for me! What I like the most is the way he is so smart when defending. He’s not anxious when marking, he’s very careful and patient. That makes it difficult for many strikers. In my case, I’m pretty fast and I like to dribble, so I need the defender to come. But if he holds he can wait for help from another defender.
